I have left work on the North Yorkshire Moors.

In the stream at Dalby forest.

In the hollows of trees.

On various Yorkshire beaches

Many works are never seen again.

Nature often gains the upper hand.

Ryōanji (Shinjitai: 竜安寺, Kyūjitai: 龍安寺, The Temple of the Dragon at Peace) is a Zen temple located in northwest Kyoto, Japan. It belongs to the Myōshin-ji school of the Rinzai branch of Zen Buddhism. The temple garden is considered to be one of the finest examples of a kare-sansui, a Japanese rock garden, or zen garden, in Japan. The temple and gardens are listed as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is from a small selection of shots I just got around to postprocess but were taken in Japan in Sept 2008.

京都 世界遺産 龍安寺 方丈庭園 石庭

満開の桜の中、謎多き庭と対峙して観るのもよきかな

The famous Ryoanji rock garden is a sublime masterpiece that was created around 1500 by the Zen monk Tokuho Zenketsu. It measures 25x10 meters and features 15 rocks and white gravel. The rocks symbolize islands in the sea, or mountains above the mist.

When you sit alongside the garden, there’s no point from which you can see all 15 rocks completely, thus reminding us that our perception is incomplete.

When I see Ryoanji, it makes me think of the third verse of “Abendlied” by Matthias Claudius:

Seht ihr den Mond dort stehen?

Er ist nur halb zu sehen,

Und ist doch rund und schön!

So sind wohl manche Sachen,

Die wir getrost belachen,

Weil unsre Augen sie nicht sehn.

Do you see the moon there?

It is only half visible,

Yet it is round and beautiful!

There probably are some things

We laugh and sneer at;

Because our eyes can not see them.

Voyez-vous la lune?

Elle est seulement à moitié visible,

Mais elle est ronde et belle!

Donc il y a probablement des choses

Nous ridiculons;

Parce que nos yeux ne peuvent pas les voir.

Btw: after 10 a. m. this temple is terribly crowded. If you want to enjoy it in serenity, get up early. The early bird catches the worm :-)

This is Tsukubai (蹲踞), a stone water basin. The center square is a part of each Kanji word around it. The message is "Ware Tada Tarukotowo Shiru (吾唯足知)".

I only know Ryoanji through photographs, one day I hope to visit. I have used this Garden as a reference point for my recent work.

Some visitors observe the rock garden in the Ryoanji Temple, Kyoto.
