Lindis Pass (elevation 971 m) is located in the South Island of New Zealand.
It lies between the towns of Cromwell in Central Otago and Omarama in North Otago, on the main inland route to the Mackenzie Basin in the Canterbury Region.
The pass lies between the valleys of the Lindis and Ahuriri Rivers.
State Highway 8 transverses the pass on its route from the Mackenzie Basin to Central Otago. The pass is the highest point on the South Island's state highway network, and the second highest point on the New Zealand state highway network, after the Desert Road (SH 1) in the Central North Island. Despite this, it is not considered one of the alpine passes as it located in the dry interior of the South Island.
These two little charmers are two of my wonderful grandchildren, 2-year old Patrick (right) and Ryan (left).
Patrick is former street girl Sandra's son and Ryan, his cousin, is the son of her older sister Eliana, also a former street girl. Both parents have been under my care since they themselves were rescued from the streets as kids, but who are now independent young adults living their own lives.
It's good to know that these delightful children will not be following in their parent's footsteps during the most important years of their childhood development, having the safety network of a family around them and the supporting structure that Hummingbird has to offer, together with the knowledge gained by the mothers during many years of recuperation from their own lost childhood on the streets.
But if these children are to have a good start in life we also need help in supporting part of the social structure that is available and necessary for them, such as kindergarten and pre-school. The public system is so overloaded that it is extremely difficult to accommodate all the kids in need of a pre-school place in Brazil. Therefore there are now many children who spend their days in privately run kindergarten, so that parents have the opportunity to find jobs to sustain their families. Even though these lower-class, privately run kindergarten are much cheaper than their middle-class equivalents, the costs are still unreasonably high considering that most of the money earned by the mother will go to pay for the child’s school fees, approx. USD$75.00 per month.
One of our aims at Hummingbird is to raise the number of individual “godparents” connected to our programme, who would like to help out financially by taking on such costs on a regular basis, thus becoming part of our supporting network and in this way, guaranteeing a great start in life for these children.
Feel free to contact me if you have such an interest and I will be only too happy to provide you with more information. Why not try sharing just a little of what you may have more than enough of, with those less fortunate than yourselves and who probably have much less.

Taken after sanding surface primer
Strobist:
Two bare flashes L and R at 45 degrees and about waist high
bare backlight on ground behind at 45 degree camera left
A little post processing experimentation:
sumi-e filter layer in overlay at about 20% opacity
high pass at about 3 pix in hard light and about 20% opacity to recover some details
**The Sumi-e filter (in brush strokes, CS4) provides a sharper, contrasty look like a wide radius high pass, but without haloes
**High pass added to bring back fine detail lost in Sumi-e
Critique on any level (shooting, lights, post, etc.) more than welcome! Please share any ideas or gripes.

With Ryan and his family soon to move down to Devon time has been running out to shoot Ryan doing a flair on this natural quarter in Basildon. Its been on my hit list for ages so when Tom Wilox told me Grit had the next front cover I knew this was the photo for it.

A while back my friend Ryan found this Rover as a project car. He asked me if I wanted to go along on a harder trail with him recently, so of course I was game to go! After all was said and done, I got this portrait of him to finish out the roll.
