The rustic kitchen. The oven part of the stove doesn't work. It's never been hooked up to the propane supply. But the four burners on top work, as long as you light them with a match or lighter. The blue and black basins on the counter act as the kitchen sink and there's plenty of water in the stream just outside the back door.

A fresh white onion sliced in half reveals its layered, translucent rings, placed on a wooden cutting board with a chef’s knife. A simple kitchen still life that highlights the natural texture and form of this everyday ingredient.

The cabin can sleep four people and the mattresses are in pretty good shape. There's no electricity, running water or lights but there's a nice wood stove, and firewood is provided.

This stunning wood-fired pizza oven is the heart of an authentic Neapolitan pizzeria, radiating warmth and tradition. The oven’s rounded, tiled exterior, adorned with golden mosaic lettering, is a signature of a handcrafted, high-temperature pizza oven designed for baking perfection. Inside, the glowing embers and roaring flames ensure that each pizza is cooked in seconds, achieving the ideal balance of crispy, charred crust and a soft, airy interior.

A pizzaiolo in a brown cap and mask works diligently, showcasing the art of traditional pizza-making, where skill, precision, and high-quality ingredients come together. The open-flame cooking method allows for the unmistakable leopard spotting on the dough—an essential feature of true Neapolitan-style pizza. The scene is alive with heat, craftsmanship, and culinary passion, making it a visual and sensory delight for pizza lovers.

In the foreground, a stack of white plates and a red-handled pizza tool sit atop a wooden counter, ready for service. A notebook filled with handwritten notes suggests menu planning, recipe adjustments, or even a chef’s journal, adding a personal, behind-the-scenes touch to the setting.

This inviting pizzeria environment reflects the deep-rooted Italian tradition of wood-fired cooking, where every pizza tells a story. Whether in Naples, Tokyo, or New York, a true forno a legna (wood-fired oven) remains the gold standard for pizza authenticity.

For those in search of the perfect slice, this image embodies the essence of old-world craftsmanship, modern culinary expertise, and the simple magic of a fire-kissed pizza.

Prototype kitchen door done in Halingdal style.... from the workshop of Cathy Koball, folk artist and rosemal'er in Grand Meadow, Minnesota.

Looks to me like we should do the whole kitchen....

Cathy Koball has been so busy this past year that we were unable to just have her come to California and "paint our kitchen", but has been willing to assist us in accomplishing this daunting project by painting cabinet doors in her workshop and sending them to us. Pictured here is the prototype of the door motif.

Cathy..... you're brilliant and your work (done here in oil for durability) will last hundreds of years.

The kitchen at Zakopane in the Sierras is manufactured in 350 year old reclaimed teak from old farmhouses in Java. The counter tops are Brazilain granite, the backsplash is tumbled Italian travertine, the appliances are Thermador, and the cooking is as good as it gets..... Mulligan stew on Thursday nights, pot roast on Sundays in March.

Reclaimed teak breakfast nook done in traditional Norwegian karveskurd (chip carving). The pattern we chose from searching through pictures of old mangleboards. The mounts are Black Forest roe deer. The prints are 18th century lithographs from Westphalia. The plates are Hutsell from the Carpathian Alps west of Kiev. The beams are reclaimed oak from Canada. The cowbells are hand painted by renowned folk artist and rosemal'er Cathy Koball of Grand Meadow, Minnesota. Apron is from Harrod's.

This inviting kitchen features bespoke aged copper worktops with matching upstands, lending warmth and richness to the space. The natural patina of the copper adds depth and character, beautifully paired with soft blue walls, live-edge timber shelving, and a mix of vintage and contemporary fixtures. A perfect example of how aged copper surfaces can complement both rustic and modern interiors.

Dry stack Montana basalt, 500 year-old temple stone (granite) from China on the floors, 350 year-old reclaimed teak cabinets in Viking dragon motif, 150 year-old reclaimed oak beams, German multi-point windows, an old school house light rescued from a demolition in western Massachusetts, and decorative plates from the Hutsell mountain folks of the Carpathian Alps of western Ukraine. Carpet is tribal Persian.

Almost done with Phase 1 of our project. They tell us about 6 weeks. Virtually all interior work now, with some simple touches to a very "natural landscape scheme" and our Vorwerk will be done.

My lifelong thanks to my three Viking buddies from University of Montana... Arnstein Rustberggard of Gol, Klaus Urbaye of Oslo, and Jan Brentebratten of Chicken Falls (Honefoss) for teaching me how to love all things NORGE !!!

We began with a simple Carpathian Alps design known as Zakopane Style, after the alpine village of the same name in the podhale (alpine area) along the Polish/Slovakian border. From there we added architectural accoutrements covering a historical period from 1050AD to approximately 1920, in the modern age. We have incorporated door portals and shutter carvings from the old Stavkirke (Stave Churches) of Hallingdal, Telemark, and Urnes (Norway)... to roof details from the Novgorod/upper Dvina River Region of NW Russia... to window carvings from the old Prussia/Bohemian regions...... carved doors reminiscent of the Baltics, and various other folk details from the Hutsells of Ukraine and the goral (mtn people) in Poland.

This is Phase 1 of a larger compound to incorporate inspiration from European architecture as well as many such inspirations in our own High Sierras. Sites such as Vikingsholm at Lake Tahoe, the Hearst compound at Wyntoon, Rainbow Lodge, Sugarbowl, and Thunderbird Lodge.

The cabin has a refrigerator, oven and lights, all powered by propane. The wood stove, seen here, will heat the entire place in about 10 or 15 minutes. There is no running water but the kitchen has a working sink, pots, pans and eating utensils. There’s even tissue dispenser.

Can we apply rustic kitchen ideas for the main idea of restoration house? Alright, you may think that the idea is not lavish. In fact, this kind of kitchen design becomes so popular among people in the urban area. Why do they adore this kind of kitchen design? It is because of the concept that...
