Payton Also Made His Mark in Motor Racing

By SHAV GLICK / Nov. 2, 1999

When Walter Payton finished his Hall of Fame career in professional football, he turned his competitive juices to auto racing. Payton was invited to drive in Toyota celebrity races during the Long Beach Grand Prix in 1988 and 1989 and always said those races whetted his racing appetite. “That was a blast,” he said after finishing the 1988 race. “I want to try that again.” His response was to drive two years in the Sports Car Club of America’s Pro Sports 2000 series and a year in the Oldsmobile Pro Series. After winning the SCCA GT-1 championship during the 1990 June Sprints, he decided to become a professional and run in the SCCA Trans-Am series.

In his first pro race, at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., Payton drove for Paul Newman and Bob Sharp in an Oldsmobile Cutlass. He lasted only 13 laps before his engine gave out. In 1992, he came back to Long Beach in the Trans-Am, driving a Chevrolet Camaro for Tom Gloy and again had mechanical trouble. His best finish in 18 Trans-Ams with Gloy was an eighth at Road America in a Ford Mustang in 1992. Twice he received the series’ “Hard Charger” race award, both times at Watkins Glen, N.Y. In 1994, at 40, he decided to give up driving and bought into Dale Coyne’s Indy car team, which became Payton-Coyne Racing. “Walter was a familiar sight in the pits and on his scooter at every race,” said Mike Zizzo, a CART official. “Until his sickness, he never missed watching his drivers on the track.” Shorly after Payton announced his illness, all the cars in this year’s CART season opener at Homestead, Fla., carried a decal, reading, “Get Well, Sweetness” and was accompanied by a football helmet with No. 34 in the Chicago Bear colors.

Walter Payton - Walter Jerry Payton (July 25, 1953 – November 1, 1999) was an American professional football running back who played in the National Football League for 13 seasons with the Chicago Bears. Nicknamed "Sweetness", he is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time.

Payton began his football career in Mississippi and went on to have an outstanding college football career at Jackson State University playing for the Tigers, where he was named Little All-American twice. He started his professional career with the Chicago Bears in 1975, who selected him with the 1975 draft's fourth overall pick. Payton proceeded to win the 1977 AP NFL Most Valuable Player Award and won Super Bowl XX with the 1985 Chicago Bears. He retired from football at the end of the 1987 season having rushed for at least 1,200 yards in 10 of his 13 seasons in the NFL (with two of those thirteen being lockout-shortened seasons).

A nine-time Pro Bowl selection, Payton is remembered as a prolific rusher. He has held NFL records for career rushing yards, touchdowns, carries, yards from scrimmage, all-purpose yards, and many other categories. Payton also retired with the most receptions by a non-receiver, and he threw eight career touchdown passes. Payton was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993, to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame that same year, and to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996. He was named to the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1994 and the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2019.

After struggling with the rare liver disease primary sclerosing cholangitis for several months, Payton died on November 1, 1999, from cholangiocarcinoma at the age of 46. His legacy includes being the eponym of the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and the Walter Payton Award, as well as a heightened awareness of the need for organ donations.

The three players selected before Walter Payton in the 1975 NFL Draft were QB Steve Bartkowski (1st overall), DT Randy White (2nd overall), and G Ken Huff (3rd overall). Payton was chosen by the Chicago Bears with the fourth overall pick.

Here's a breakdown of the first round:

#1: Atlanta Falcons selected Steve Bartkowski (Quarterback).

#2: Dallas Cowboys selected Randy White (Defensive Tackle).

#3: Baltimore Colts selected Ken Huff (Guard).

#4: Chicago Bears selected Walter Payton (Running Back).

There's not a better opportunity for you to watch the team practice from the sidelines and maybe even score an autograph or photo with your favorite players. Last year more than 150,000 fans came to Richmond to watch, meet and get autographs from their favorite players. Red Weasel Media RWM was right in the middle of the action.
