Preferisco così
senza troppo rumore
come quando si sta soli
dietro una porta a guardare che spiove
Preferisco così
senza niente da dire
che un amore si sa
prima o dopo rubato sarà
Preferisco così
che non c'è niente da fare
solo stare seduti
a una porta qualunque
a guardare che spiove

A few uploads back, I posted a look back to better times in North Conway; here, then, is a look to the current situation, with weather to match the mood.
Those yellow chains lining the platform are new, as are the numerous "Area Closed" signs that now ring the property; even taking this shot from the edge of the parking lot earned me the stinkeye. I've heard a lot of rumors about personnel changes and the corresponding effect on equipment maintenance as well.
All in all, its a sad decline for what was once unquestionably New England's premier tourist railroad.
As it goes, a friend and I headed out for yet another warbler outing. My expectations for this particular outing were quite high and, by some miracle, were exceeded. It's not everyday one gets the opportunity to photograph such a cooperative subject, let alone one that isn't all that common in my neck of the woods. The Canada Warbler breeds sparingly throughout the swampier, mixed forests of New Jersey. There are rumors of populations in a few far corners of the state, deep within dense wilderness where few birders trek. One could spend hours hiking the desolate trails, fending off bears and ticks just hoping to catch a glimpse of one of these stunning songbirds. Alternatively, you could hop in the car, drive around long enough in the right habitat to find a boat load of them just off the road. The choice was simple. After a few hours drive into the heart of Canada Warbler breeding territory, the first stop was made. It was quite lively. Among other things, Canada, Black-throated Green, Prairie and Blackburnian Warblers could all be heard singing. That's all great and wonderful, but none were so kind as to come into view. The Blackburnian Warbler would go on to make a passing visit, but this would last no more than a few seconds. With the likelihood of success dwindling, the executive decision was made to cut our losses and head to a new spot. We returned to a park in which we found our first Canada Warbler last year. That particular outing was by no means a failure, but it certainly left some to be desired. Last years bird were tough to get still and the lighting conditions were even tougher. That being said, we were hopeful for a change this time around. It wasn't more than ten minutes of driving in that we heard the familiar song. This patch was dense with rhododendron and swampy. Perfect habitat for Canada Warbler. Soon after, this male emerged from the shrubbery and began his routine of sing, forage, repeat. His preferred perches were low and obscured, but occasionally he would oblige us and chose an open perch. I use "open" generously. Even the open perches were low. I had to kneel and lean forward or lay on the ground to get a decently clean background. Had I sat upright, the background would've been a tangled mess of twigs and Mountain Laurel. Still, I can't complain. He found a few nice mossy logs to land on. The flower, which I believe to be Marsh Blue Violet, was just the cherry on top.
"Rumors Of War" statue by artist Kehinde Wiley depicts an African American man dressed in streetwear in the pose of a Confederate War Statue. In a statement by Wiley " “The inspiration for Rumors of War is war—is an engagement with violence. Art and violence have for an eternity held a strong narrative grip with each other. Rumors of War attempts to use the language of equestrian portraiture to both embrace and subsume the fetishization of state violence. New York and Times Square in particular sit at the crossroads of human movement on a global scale. To have the Rumors of War sculpture presented in such a context lays bare the scope and scale of the project in its conceit to expose the beautiful and terrible potentiality of art to sculpt the language of domination.”
The statue temporarily installed in New York's Times Square until December will be permanently installed outside the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts less than a mile from the Confederate Statue that was its inspiration.

Family rare white lions (lion: Credo, lioness: Bandhura, and two three month old cubs: Inkosi and Ilumbo) in Ouwehands Zoo (Ouwehands Dierenpark) in Rhenen, the Netherlands.
One of the cubs came too close to the water. Dad corrects the whelp. Mom looks attentively and with care.
For centuries rumors of mysterious white lions had been circulating in South Africa. Confirmation of the existence of white lions only came in the twentieth century. White lions were first recorded in 1928 and in the early 1940s. In 1975, two white cubs were seen at Timbavati Game Reserve, adjacent to Krüger National Park in South Africa. They were roughly two weeks old. The discovery was a sensation. The white specimens proved to be male and female. They were named Temba (Zulu for hope) and Tombi (girl). A few months later Temba en Tombi were taken to the National Zoo in Pretoria, South Africa. The 50 white lions currently in zoos worldwide are descendants of Temba and Tombi. White Lions cannot probable survive in the wild due to perceived lack of camouflage. Adult white lions in the wild have never seen.
White Lions are not albinos, but rare color mutations of the Krüger subspecies of lion (Panthera leo krugeri).
They have a combination of recessive genes which give them a white skin. The genetic condition, leucism, that causes paler colouration akin to that of the white tiger; the condition is similar to melanism, which causes black panthers. The white lion has been perpetuated by selective breeding in zoos around the world.

She's got some nice long hair
And you know that she's a bad chick
All the boys stare
Can't help it it's a habit
Clothes that she wears
Short skirt and a jacket
I just wanna get her all alone
On a mattress
I just wanna have it
I just gotta have it
Rumors all around say her body is fantastic
All natural, not a piece of her is plastic
Head to her toes yea they say that she's elastic
Yea the whispers all around say she has a reputation
Don't believe it 'till I see it so I want a demonstration
And I've always learned it better with a hands on education
So I need a private session if you get what I am saying
And they say that she's not easy no she's really complicated
But that only makes it better and it's got me so fixated
And I'm not the type to wait around I've never hesitated
But she's got me captivated so the game I'm gonna play it yea
She's got a body like a coke fiend
She likes to keep the party going
These rumors got me feeling lonely
I want that body baby show me
She's got a body like a coke fiend
She likes to keep the party going
These rumors got me feeling lonely
I want that body baby show me
I want that body baby show me

From the usual spot along Big Bend Road at CP Junction in Brooklyn, IL and on top of my car, looking north into TRRA's Madison Yard.
A dirty CP GEVO tries on NS train M11 for size, seen here headed south towards the Willows interlocking. This extra section of train 111 will continue down TRRA's Illinois Transfer before turning east into the Coapman Yard limits, eventually getting a track warrant to Centralia.
Waiting behind me is train 224, which will meet 223 on the other side of the Mississippi river, just south of NS Luther Yard.
