Yosemite National Park, California. During a visit in May 1973, it snowed so much that we were trapped in Yosemite Valley for a day or more. But when the sky cleared, the snow on the rocks and trees was beautiful.

The journey from Stepantsminda back through the Jvari Pass on a clear, sunny day offers a completely different, yet equally breathtaking experience. With a bright blue sky and the sun illuminating the snow-capped peaks, the landscape reveals its full splendor. This stunning photo captures the Jvari Pass Cross Pass in the Greater Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, a high-altitude mountain pass along the famous Georgian Military Road. At an elevation of approximately 2,379 meters (7,805 feet), the pass serves as a breathtaking gateway between the valleys of Georgia and the rugged peaks of the Caucasus. In the background, several majestic peaks dominate the landscape: Deda Ena (3,501 m) – Meaning “mother tongue” in Georgian, it is one of the most iconic peaks in the region. Gora Khyrguna (3,120 m) – A striking mountain that adds to the dramatic skyline. Bidara (3,164 m) – Recognizable by its sharp ridges and contrasting slopes. Gora Sut (3,193 m) – Another impressive peak that rises prominently above the surrounding valleys. The landscape displays a mesmerizing contrast between snow-capped peaks and the golden autumn slopes, a characteristic feature of the region in late autumn. The deep blue sky and scattered clouds emphasize the grandeur of the Caucasus, making this a truly awe-inspiring sight for travelers and adventurers. This region is not only a natural wonder, but also an important historical and cultural route, with some of the most panoramic views in all of Georgia.

Under a brilliant blue sky, the sun illuminates the snow-capped peaks, revealing the landscape in all its splendor. As we leave Stepantsminda, the majestic Mount Kazbek lingers in the rearview mirror, while golden autumn hues blend seamlessly with the white summits of the Greater Caucasus. The winding Georgian Military Road stretches ahead, flanked by deep valleys and rugged cliffs, each turn unveiling a new postcard-worthy vista. Approaching the Jvari Pass, the air turns crisp and invigorating, yet the sunlight casts a warm glow over the vast, open scenery.
“Horizontal Falls” is the name given to a unique phenomenon on the Kimberley coast of Western Australia. It has been described by the British naturalist David Attenborough as “one of the greatest wonders of the natural world”.
The ‘Falls’ are actually powerful water currents created by ten-metre-high tides that force seawater through two narrow gaps in the coastal range. These gaps separate the open ocean from two internal gorges. As the ocean tide rises, water is forced into the gorges. When the tide turns the water traped inside is unable to exit fast enough. It banks up as high as five metres before rushing through as a surging torrent.
When my wife and I were taken through the narrower of the two gaps in the late afternoon, the 900hp fast-boat we were riding in had to maintain a speed of 12 knots (22 kilometres per hour) simply to stay in the same place relative to the cliffs on either side. Next morning the current was faster and stronger. We were able to approach the gap to get this photograph but passage through it was too dangerous to be attempted.*

Matala has a safe natural harbor on the Bay of Messara. It offers sandy and pebble beaches. It's the place, where according to legend where Zeus swam ashore in the guise of a bull with Europa on his back. The beach is 250m long and 45m wide. Matala is also famous for its impressive formations of sandstone rock cliffs sliding into the Bay of Messara at an odd angle, creating one of the most unusual beachscapes.

~Ice Plant~
Iceplant is a coastal succulent shrub native to the coast of South Africa, where the climate is similar to that of coastal California. Iceplant was introduced to California in the early 1900s as an erosion stabilization tool used on railroad tracks, and later used by Caltrans on roadsides. It has been used as an ornamental for many years, and is still sold in nurseries. Unfortunately, iceplant spreads easily, and has become invasive in coastal California from north of Humboldt County to as far south as Baja California. When it establishes in a location, it forms a large, thick mat that chokes out all other native plants and alters the soil composition of the environment. Because it is a coastal invader, it competes with many endangered, threatened, and rare plants.
Iceplant is shallowly rooted, so it is possible to control it manually, and iceplant removal provides a good volunteer day for student groups. Unfortunately, it is so widespread that it is only realistic to try to control small infestations at once. It is important to follow iceplant removal with rehabilitation of the area because it is easy for iceplant to re-establish in bare soil. Although iceplant can be attractive, it is important not to plant it in areas where it may become invasive. There are many other coastal species native to California you could choose to use instead, and below is one example.

After passing through Wadi Tiwi and navigating a steep dirt road, we arrived at Wadi Mibam. To reach the stunning blue pool, we had to walk down hundreds of steps—a bit of a workout, but worth it for the view! While the rest of the family enjoyed swimming in the crystal-clear water surrounded by rugged cliffs and greenery, I stayed dry. My excuse? Someone had to take the pictures! These shots capture the fun and adventure of exploring this remote and peaceful wadi.

While staying at the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, we decided to hike a section of the coastal path from Crail to Anstruther. Both our Michelin Guide and the hotel concierge highly recommended this scenic stretch. The path is about 8 kilometers long and starts in Crail, a charming fishing village known for its picturesque harbor. As we walked, the path followed the coast, offering dramatic sea views and rugged cliffs. I took lots of pictures along the way. This photo, while perhaps not my best shot, I’ll keep because it so perfectly reflects the views we enjoyed during the hike – Anstruther, Scotland, UK.
The Potomac River unfolds majestically at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, a town steeped in history and embraced by the natural grandeur of the Appalachian Mountains. Flowing between the ridges of Maryland Heights on the left and Loudoun Heights on the right, the Potomac River meets the Shenandoah at this celebrated confluence, a meeting point that has witnessed centuries of American history.
Maryland Heights rises dramatically from the riverbank, its rugged cliffs marked by historical Civil War fortifications that remind visitors of the area’s turbulent past. Trees cling to the steep slopes, their bare winter branches etching stark lines against the rolling sky—a dance of clouds and sunlight that bathes the water below in a mesmerizing glow.
The water’s deep blue hues reflect the vast expanse of sky, creating a dynamic interplay of color that draws the eye upstream toward the distant bridge—an echo of the region’s historic transportation routes. Beyond the bridge, the Potomac continues its journey eastward, carving its way toward the Chesapeake Bay.
Harpers Ferry, designated as a National Historical Park, embodies the convergence of natural beauty, American history, and cultural heritage. The Potomac’s flow here has carried stories of conflict, commerce, and community, shaping the identity of this historic town. The steep banks and layered rock formations add texture and depth to the landscape, hinting at the geological forces that have sculpted the Appalachian region over millennia.
Visitors standing at this vantage point are invited to reflect on the many layers of history that have unfolded where the Potomac and Shenandoah meet: from the days of canal transport to the Civil War’s strategic crossings, to the hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Harpers Ferry continues to captivate all who seek to explore its rich tapestry of past and present.

Nanaimo, BC Canada
Pipers Lagoon Park is one of the finest, most exotic oceanside parks in Nanaimo.
Aerial view of Pipers Lagoon and Shack Island. The lagoon itself (Page Lagoon) is the size of three football fields. It fills to the brim at high tide, and empties almost completely when the tide goes out, leaving a nutritious muck that attracts all kinds of bird life.
But the real highlights are the rocky shores and crags with their walking trails, and the beaches with their driftwood offerings.
After the long dyke, it gets rocky: there are basalt bluffs (caution) that are fun to climb, arbutus groves and huge Garry Oaks, eagle nests and wide views of the Strait.
It should be noted that the trails around the bluffs are fairly rugged and should not be attempted by those who have mobility challenges. The park is very accessible until one gets to the first bluffs, where some light rock climbing is required to proceed - unless one sticks to the beach (not possible at high tide).

~Morro Bay Harbor~
Morro Bay is a natural embayment with an artificial harbor constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is the only all-weather small craft commercial and recreational harbor between Santa Barbara and Monterey. Morro Rock was originally surrounded by water, but the Army built a large artificial breakwater and road across the north end of the harbor, linking Morro Rock and the mainland. Some of the rock used for this and for the artificial breakwaters was quarried from Morro Rock itself. Other rock was imported by barge from Catalina Island. The bay extends inland and parallels the shore for a distance of about 4 miles south of its entrance at Morro Rock. Morro Bay is recognized for protection by the California Bays and Estuaries Policy.
Only relatively small craft are capable of passing the harbor channel. A large natural sandspit, augmented by breakwaters, protects the harbor from the Pacific Ocean to the west. At its northern end, remains of a bridge that used to connect the shore with the sandspit can be seen. Morro Bay Harbor's channel silts up and must be dredged every three to four years. Previously, the Shark Inlet connected the back bay to the ocean. Some have proposed reopening it to slow the sedimentation that is filling up the bay. There has also been work on reducing erosion in the Chorro Creek watershed to reduce the amount of sediment coming into the bay to form bottom layers of bay mud. Chorro Creek is the bay's largest tributary. It forms an estuary in the back bay between Morro Bay and Los Osos. The second largest tributary, and the only other significant one, is Los Osos Creek, which empties into the far south end of the back bay.
Climate
Morro Bay experiences a mild warm-summer Mediterranean climate characteristic of coastal California featuring dry, warm summers and wet, mild winters. The city is located next to the Pacific Ocean, which helps moderate temperatures and create an overall pleasant mild year-round climate, resulting in warmer winters and cooler summers compared with places farther inland, such as Atascadero. Summers in Morro Bay are cool for a city located on the 35th parallel north latitude, with July averaging around 60 °F (16 °C). Winters are mild, with January averaging at 55 °F (13 °C) with around 8 days of measurable precipitation.
Morro Bay is a coastal city in California. It's known for Morro Rock, an ancient volcanic mound at the end of Morro Rock Beach. The rock sits within Morro Bay State Park, home to lagoons, trails and a bird-rich saltwater marsh. Morro Bay State Park’s Museum of Natural History features exhibits on ecology and local Native American culture. Trails lead up Black Hill for views over the city and Morro Bay.
Morro Rock
The town's most striking feature is Morro Rock, a 576 foot high volcanic plug which stands at the entrance to the harbor. Originally it was surrounded by water, but the northern channel was filled in to make the harbor. It was quarried from 1889 to 1969, and in 1968, it was designated a Historical Landmark.
The area around the base of Morro Rock is open to visitors, with parking lots and paths. However, climbing the rock itself is prohibited except with a permit, both due to risk of injury, and because it is a peregrine falcon reserve.
Morro Rock is one in a series of similar plugs that stretch in a line inland called the Nine Sisters. It is possible that the landscape moved over a volcanic hot spot through the ages.

This captivating photograph captures the historic B&O Railroad Bridge crossing the Shenandoah River at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. This site marks the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, nestled beneath the imposing rock face of Maryland Heights—a rugged landmark that looms above the scene. The bridge, a testament to 19th-century engineering and design, was a vital transportation route during the Civil War and remains a crucial part of American railroad history.
The steel truss bridge stretches across the river on sturdy stone piers, its weathered ironwork echoing the industrial past that shaped Harpers Ferry’s identity. Trains, still in service today, traverse the bridge, connecting the past with the present as they journey through the Appalachian landscape. The piers of an older bridge can be seen in the foreground—remnants of an earlier crossing that was destroyed during the war, a silent witness to the town’s tumultuous history.
Beyond the bridge, the stone ruins of earlier bridge abutments stand on the riverbank like sentinels, each block telling a story of conflict and resilience. Harpers Ferry was a strategic target during the Civil War, repeatedly contested by Union and Confederate forces. These bridge piers once supported a crucial link in the transportation network that supplied troops and carried commerce along the B&O Railroad.
The photograph’s composition draws the eye along the bridge to the dark, cavernous train tunnel cut into the mountain—a passage through which countless trains have roared since the 19th century. Above, the clouds dance in a dynamic sky, a perfect counterpoint to the river’s steady flow and the rugged cliffs beyond.
This image captures the enduring intersection of nature, history, and technology in Harpers Ferry, a town that continues to honor its place in America’s story.
