A Ruby-throated Hummingbird

The humming birds enjoy our new feeders and we see the birds throughout our day.

This image was taken in Central Massachusetts.

Strobist: Three 580EXII on stands surrounding the feeder at 1/64 +1/3 at around 10" away. Waited until the ambient dropped well below the flash exposure, 1/250 @ f/11, ISO 100 to knock the background to black. This left me about 10 minutes to shoot, triggering with Pocket Wizards.

These pictures aren't the best quality wise; they were taken through the kitchen window, at dusk, but they are so much fun I just had to share them anyways...

Two ruby-throated hummingbirds have a non-verbal discussion over who is entitled to the patch of flowers nearby.

Note the position of the wings and tail feathers of the hummingbird on the right.

This little male Ruby Throated Hummingbird may have been sitting on this branch, but he wasn't sitting still. He was constantly in motion, looking left, right, up and down, stretching his neck like a periscope, stretching his wings and fluffing up his feathers like in this photo.

He wore me out just watching him, but it was a fun "workout" I'd happily do again.

This was taken through the kitchen window, leaning over the sink with shaky hands trying not to bump the window pane with my camera. Now that was the real workout!

I'd seen only one hummingbird all summer until yesterday when I spotted several at feeders on balconies on the apartment buildings I pass regularly on my way out to do some bird-watching.

First I heard the telltale buzz of hummingbirds battling. Then I looked up to watch a couple of what appeared to be tiny, remote-controlled fighter jets in action. I guess what you see here is the victor.

Thanks for your visit . I hope you'll become a regular.

This gal was enjoying herself on what is left of our Bee Balm. The male has been around as well but he is way more skittish. Hopefully I will capture him soon LOL.

Practicing with my new camera. I felt so lucky to catch her (him? -- too young to tell for sure) backing up with her tongue still out.

This is a male Ruby Throated at one of my favorite blown glass hummingbird feeders. Unfortunately the angle of light striking the hummingbird's throat was not such as to exhibit the gorgeous Ruby Red throat. I am still working on it though..

Not many coming to the feeders on this day

Here's another Ruby-throated Hummingbird like what you see in the previous photo. However, this one is visiting a first-floor feeder while the other one is visiting a second-floor feeder. I was experimenting with shooting from different angles and at different times of day to see if I could produce a photo of a Ruby-throatedHummingbird sporting a ruby-colored throat patch. Ah well.

Come back when you can. Your visits and comments are much appreciated..
