For those of you who know the Republic Rubber site in Youngstown, check out my video on the company's history and my upcoming book "Lost Youngstown."
Another image from a recently digitized book found in our archives. The book is titled “Port of Manchester” and subtitled “Illustrated History of the Manchester Ship Canal 1708-1901."
The handsome volume contains around 50 full-page images and illustrations. The images include photographs of the canal under construction and in use, various locks and the dock areas and associated warehouses.
The illustrations are advertisements for many of the companies used the canal to operate their businesses. The companies include some of the giants of the cotton industry, heavy engineering and printing.
This plate features David Moseley and Sons. The company was best known as a manufacturer of rubber products and made everything from raincoats and domestic goods to sports equipment and pneumatic tyres.
The company was one of the biggest of their type in the UK. Though based in Manchester, they had warehouses in Birmingham, London, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia.
The company was founded in 1833 and traded independently until 1964. In that year it was bought by the Avon Rubber Company. This new firm, renamed Avon Moseley finally ceased trading in 1981.

Galbiati Group, attending with its Divisions Mechanical machining and Construction and Gear Reducers, attracted considerable interest, and contacts rose far above the level of 2009. Expectations were exceeded, and this is a positive sign for a country, Germany, first in Europe in the engineering sector.

ZENA-SEAL (ZSWP100) is a waterproofing membrane developed by Zenith Rubber. The rubber membrane has 100 % EPDM polymer content making it an ideal choice for the water-proofing of roofs, swimming pools, foundations for civil constructions, soak pits for animal feed, gobar gas plants, canals, etc. With a life that spans 20 years, ZENA-SEAL (ZSW100) is the best choice for waterproofing applications.

Rubber tree plantations as far as the eye can see. These hills used to be populated by original, natural rain forest just a few years ago. Since rubber trees promise a lot of income not only did the local farmers destroy rain forest to plant rubber trees. Regular local town people also got into the rubber business, getting leases on land, burning down the rain forest and planting rubber trees.

"Portion of the vast reservoir of scrap rubber available for reclaiming or regenerating by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company at its Akron factories. More than seven acres of space are devoted to its huge scrap pile which has been built up over a period of several years. This rubber can be salvaged for the manufacture of passenger car tires in the company's big Akron Reclaiming Plant." -- photo caption.
