The Bridge of Sighs’ name is based on a legend, which says that in Serenissima’s time the prisoners, crossing the bridge, sighing at the standpoint of seeing for the last time the outside world. However, the legend is totally unfounded, partly because there is almost nothing to see from that angle.
The name sighs indicate only the last breath of the prisoners in the free world because, once convicted in the kingdom of Dogi they never could go back.
The emblem displayed on the bridge shows that it was built in between the 16th and 17th century, in Istrian stone, white and elegant.
Today, its symbol is over-romantic in connection with the sight of the lover’s walks in the gondola. It is perhaps the biggest attractions in Venice, and it is said that if a couple passes under the Bridge of Sighs their love will last forever.
At Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada near the CN Tower in Toronto we saw all kinds of unusual sea creatures. Not sure what kind of fish this is — a stonefish, maybe, or some other kind of scorpionfish?
It seems to have some parasites growing on it — unless those are part of its exotic self. Camouflage?...

The pair of wells, known as the ‘Initiation Wells’ or ‘Inverted Towers’, consist of ‘winding stair’ architecture, which carries symbolic meaning including the death/rebirth allegory common to many hermetic traditions.
One of the wells contains nine platforms, which are said to be “reminiscent of the Divine Comedy by Dante and the nine circles of Hell, the nine sections of Purgatory and the nine skies which constitute Paradise.” A smaller well, called the “Unfinished Well,” contains a set of straight staircases, connecting the ring-shaped floors to one another. It is believed that the spacing of the landings, as well as the number of steps in between were dictated by Masonic principles.
These wells never served as water sources. Instead, they were used for ceremonial purposes that included Tarot initiation rites. The tunnels described above connect these wells to one another, in addition to various caves and other monuments located around the park.

At San Luis Obispo’s Fire Station # 1, a plaque near this artwork states, “This memorial commemorates the lives of those first responders who perished on September 11, 2001 and provides visitors with the opportunity to learn more about the men and women who sacrificed their lives so that others may live. Each rod represents one of the 403 emergency responder lives lost, communicating the scale of human loss.”

A stone’s throw from the Royal Palace, on Coudenberg, we find the church of Saint James the Elder, which was ordered built by Charles of Lorraine and completed in 1787. There had been chapels and churches in this location since at least the twelfth century. The first king of the Belgians took the oath on the front steps of this church. Above the side-altar on the left you see a statue of Our Lady, Comforter of the Afflicted.
It’s a familiar expression that I often saw on her happy-go-lucky son Valerio, but a rare sight on the face of this ferocious, but always beautiful girl. She’s the most gorgeous jaguar I’ve ever seen, but Nindiri is more of a no nonsense jaguar, known for expressions that tend to be on the serious side. Unless you’ve seen her raising her cubs, you’d never know how nurturing, tender, and playfully silly she can be! Nindiri is a cat with many layers, and I love her through and through!

Bakka’s quite a handsome cheetah, full of dignity and presence, and when he gives me a look at those bright eyes and teddy bear ears, my heart skips a beat!

I’ve been in awe of Nindiri from my first glimpse of her. A stunning beauty with plenty of attitude, she’s a little firecracker. But she also has a softer side. Watching her raise Tikal and Maderas born in 2012, and then Valerio born in 2015, I got to witness a whole new dimension to her personality. She was the most amazing mother - nurturing, playful, patient, and adorably silly! She taught them how to be jaguars and did it so very well, and I loved her even more!
You’re a fascinating and fabulous creature, Nindiri! Happy 10th Birthday, to a very special girl!

No, this is not Lance Armstrong’s bicycle. It is Alicja Kwade’s sculpture Journey without Arrival (Raleigh), part of the Public Arts Fund’s “Lightness of Being” exhibit in City Hall Park. “With familiar forms gone awry, her poetic works transform materials in ways that suggest time and space are malleable ideas,” says the artwork’s explanatory note, which adds “Please do not touch the work of art.”
I suppose this answers the question, “What is art?”
Art is being able to destroy a perfectly good bicycle
and charge more for it
after it has been made totally useless...

The Grevy’s zebra is the largest living wild equid. It can be distinguished from other species of zebra by its larger ears and narrower stripes. Vertical stripes cover most of the head and body, with the exception of the belly, which is white.
As a response to the sparse plant life in their habitat, Grevy's zebras usually do not form stable herds and only congregate during periods when they must migrate to find grazing or water. Grevy’s zebras have a much more open society than those of other equid species and associations between individuals, other than between a mother and her foal, rarely last for more than a few months.
Male territories are patrolled and marked with dung and are the largest of any living herbivore - up to ten square kilometres. Territorial males also vocalize loudly to assert their dominance within the territory. To adapt to a semi-arid environment, Grevy's zebra foals take longer intervals between suckling bouts and do not drink water until they are three months old. Stallions have large testicles and can ejaculate a large amount of semen to replace the sperm of other males. This is a useful adaptation for a species whose females mate polyandrously. Grevy’s zebras are in grave danger. A mere few decades ago, in the 1970s, more than 15,000 Grevy’s zebras inhabited Africa. Today, fewer than 2,500 remain.
The greatest threats facing the species today are habitat fragmentation and loss, as more land is converted to agricultural use. Overgrazing by livestock is leading to significant environmental degradation—Grevy’s zebras compete with the ever-increasing livestock population and agricultural crops for water.
I’m all SMILES after receiving the most incredible care package…full of BALLOON ANIMALS!
My wonderful, animal loving friends, Nick and Laree, sent me this whimsical surprise…just because!
Nick is a very talented balloonist and has dabbled in the world of magic. They both are very special people and their kindness has touched my heart and made me giddy! I had to have a little photo shoot with my new balloon friends, so I can remember this amazing gift of joy forever!
This week’s theme of the Macro Mondays group is “things found in the kitchen”. Why would I go into the kitchen except to fetch a beer? This bottle cap is from the latest incarnation of Firestone Walker’s Luponic Distortion series, where the brewer tries out different hops. This brand new batch, Rev. 007, uses Australian hops.
The contents of the bottle met with my approval.
My dictionary has no words between lupine and lupus, but hops are called humulus lupulus in Latin. The plant belongs to the Cannabaceae family — yes, hops are a not so distant relative of hemp...
I’m feeling thankful! We had a bit of a rough week after Abigail got sick last Monday. There were some signs that had us worried it was something serious, but she's all better now and all is right with the world! Abigail is our furry ray of sunshine! She's the bundle of fluffy joy our lives rotate around, and we’re so thankful for our beautiful girl!

Technicians at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, moved the largest piece of structural test hardware for America's new deep space rocket, the Space Launch System, from the factory to the dock where it was loaded onto NASA’s barge Pegasus Dec. 14, 2018. The liquid hydrogen tank test article will make its way up the river to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where dozens of hydraulic cylinders in Test Stand 4693 will push and pull on the giant tank, subjecting it to the same stresses and loads it will endure during liftoff and flight. The test hardware is structurally identical to the flight version of the liquid hydrogen tank that will comprise two-thirds of the core stage and hold 537,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen cooled to minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit.

Week 16: Beverly’s challenge - Maaike a contributor friend like myself at the Trevor Carpenter Photo Challenge created this week's challenge around the loss of one of our long time community members, Beverly Furillo Madison who recently passed away.
Colors were very present in Beverly's paintings and for me, birds are full of life and magic, enjoying the freedom of flight just like I imagine Angels do.
For me, Skittles the Rainbow Lory was just the perfect one to bring homage to Beverly. Even with the somber lighting of a gray and overcast Spring, Skittles' vibrant colors still shine through.
I was inspired by this abstract painting by Beverly - www.instagram.com/p/BYWpaPwDjCC/?taken-by=furillo222

Rockefeller Center’s Atlas (1937) by Lee Oskar Lawrie and René Paul Chambellan was one of the things I remembered from my brief first visit to New York, a third of a century ago, so this time around I took several pictures of it.
The designer and sculptor should not be blamed for having inspired the book “Atlas Shrugged” by the self-styled “philosopher” who called herself Ayn Rand.
Our favorite lion hearted couple is back at the Zoo! M’bari and Etosha are back from their vacation at Safari Park and enjoying their newly renovated exhibit. The majestic pair had some sweet moments today. I took this shot just moments after M’bari was gently grooming his girl, his mane all but covering her head. Then he straightened up with his head still above hers and they both looked up, eyes shining! Welcome back, you two!

Chosen for it’s strength and power, and ability to soar high in the sky to represent freedom, the bald eagle is both the national bird and the national animal of the United States of America, and is sometimes referred to as the American eagle. They are not actually bald, but have a head full of snowy white feathers. The term bald is thought to come from an older meaning of the word, “white headed”. They look rather noble on our coins and stamps, but I think they’re even more beautiful in person!

I don’t usually go about taking pictures in public restrooms (with one notable exception), but I was unable to resist this one, in the men’s room of the Anacapa Brewing Co. The fact that the sign is neatly framed probably helps to discourage vandalism.
I don’t do a lot of landscape photography; yet, though the overhanging tree could do with a little trimming, something in this summer view of the beautiful campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, made me click the shutter...;-)

There comes a time in a jaguar cub's life when he’s all grown up and his mom decides it’s time for him to become independent. That time has come. Today was Valerio’s first day of complete separation from Nindiri. The keepers were ready for this and have been keeping a close eye on Nindiri’s behavior. Yesterday she made it clear that she felt her job was done; she was showing enough aggression toward her son to get the message across. It’s sad that they won’t be together anymore, but it’s the natural progression of things. Nindiri has been a fantastic mother and has taught him well. Valerio has been well prepared for this and will do great on his own. I’ll never forget the amazing, loving, playful, and incredibly sweet relationship they’ve had while Nindiri was raising Valerio. Thankfully, many of us have lots of photos of those special times! The end of one era means the beginning of another. Now we can enjoy visiting Nindiri and Valerio as individuals, and see our favorite jaguar cub continue to develop now that he’s all grown up and out on his own! We are truly blessed to experience the lives of these awesome animals!
