When I had journeyed up to Braemar I had been keeping an eye on the ice build up on the rivers as the previous week had brought freezing temperatures. Rivers through Glenshee and the Dee were free from ice so when I came to the Geldie the previous evening I was in for a surprise. By torchlight I climbed onto the half formed sheet of ice which covered the river. The ice shattered as I started walking across it until it became thick enough to support my weight and I slid my feet slowly forward. I was starting to wonder what the Tarf Water was going to be like to cross as it was a wider river than the Geldie.
My heart sunk as I stood by the Tarf Water. I stripped down to my bra and pants and put on my waterproofs, carefully stowing my dry clothes in my rucksack. The river was visible under the ice sheet in numerous places. If the ice didn't hold where I climbed onto it I was going to be in enormous trouble. The detour round the river would have taken hours to walk and I only had about 2 hours of daylight left.

A cold and fresh day wandering over Ben Vorlich and Stuc a' Chroin. The hills had escaped the first major snowfall of the winter so I enjoyed probably my last autumn day on the hills.
