Six years ago today...truly a day never to be forgotten. My first time on the former Southern Pacifc route over legendary Donner Pass is a day that I'll personally forever remember as 'Rotary Day.' I doubt I'll ever top this railfan experience!
After hiking on snowshoes in the high Sierras I found myself on this overlook with a few good friends and a whole bunch of other intrepid photographers. We camped out in the glorious sunshine, drank beer, and told stories while waiting for four hours. And then there it was. Marching slowly east clawing at the bank along track two of UP's Roseville sub were the legendary rotaries doing what they were designed to do.
This is train WTKTKF-25 seen here crawling up the 1.8% grade at about MP 184.6 at Troy where until about 1975 Tunnel 40 cut through the hill, and Main 2 which the Rotary is on was the center siding. Newly rebuilt SPMW207 (blt. 10-26 Alco-Brooks, rblt Relco 2013) throws snow hundreds of feet off the right of way powered by its ex F7B power car, while a pair of big SD70ACEs coupled nose to nose provide the horsepower and bringing up the read kn the west end of the set is unrebuilt rotary 209 (blt. Sep. 1929 Alco-Brooks).

From the archives, a shot from May of 2014. This was taken at Rotary Gardens in Janesville, Wisconsin. This beautiful park has it all where beauty is concerned. The manicured grounds and gardens are gorgeous and a memorable delight to anyone who takes the time to visit.
New Idria, Ca. (ghost town)
The Wikipedia entry for New Idria states that it was the site of the first Gould Rotary Furnace. I believe this is what it references.
These ten enormous blades on Rotary Snowplow #1 cleared up to 12 feet of snow. It was built by the Cooke Locomotive and Machinery Company for the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad in 1898. Although it was retired and put on display next to the Skagway depot in 1965, it has been called back to service twice: the most notable occasion was when Skagway had a record snowfall of 126 inches in November of 2011.
The view along rotary way into Warkworth with the castle in the distance provides a pleasing view with the golden colours in the sky.

25 were of these rotary snow plows were built by Henschel in 1941.
After WWII, 6 of them served in east germany, 10 in west germany, 8 in austria and one in france.
They were taken out of service in the late 70's (west germany) and 80's (east germany).
5 of them are known to exist today.

The Rotary Rocket Company developed a rocket with a helicopter blade landing system. A test vehicle made three hover flights in 1999, but the company ran out of money and closed its doors in early 2001.
Or did it? I took this picture of the company in March of this year.
Rotary Float in 2017 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. The theme was polio elimination, which I heartily endorse!
Rotary Motion.
What was once a motor mechanics shop is now no longer and has been left empty for some time.
Was the business name Rotary Motion, or is it just a form of street art appropriately designed for the vacant wall?

SPMW 207 passes under the last remaining searchlight signal bridge on Donner Pass as it clears the heavy "Sierra Cement" from track #1. The rotaries would plow snow all the way to the Big Hole, before heading back west to Roseville.
