This bracket fungus is a white rot fungus. It is one of the few organisms that can break down lignin, the dark hard substance in wood, leaving the crumbly pale material you see here. The pulp and paper industry has been looking for a way to harness this process for years, replacing chlorine or ozone bleaching.

Yes, unfortunately in all dark, damp places like caves there will always be a strange odor permeating the air. But it was doubly worse that day cuz of the rotting coconuts left over from the Thaipusam celebration.
