Connected to the Earth, connected to the sky. The intricate network of connections, growing, thriving, dying, creating unique pathways from journeys beginning to end.

The roots on some of these trees are enormous. Bearing in mind that I am enormous this shows the scale well

The visual impression of Illinois’ agricultural landscapes is one of expansive openness, where the sky meets the earth in an unbroken line, punctuated only by the occasional farmhouse, silo, or grove of trees along waterways. Sometimes, the trees are part of a more extensive woodland interspersed with agricultural land. This combination, often called agroforestry, integrates trees and shrubs into crop and livestock systems that support a diverse range of plant and animal species.

Generally, it is a landscape dominated by monoculture crops, primarily corn and soybeans, stretching across the horizon in neat, orderly rows. The area is predominantly flat with gently rolling hills, and the soil is exceptionally rich, thanks to thousands of years of organic matter accumulation from deep-rooted prairie plants. This has made Illinois one of the most productive agricultural states in the United States.

Who like you could be so free,

with that slow and calm freedom

with which you are forming!

You remain, but you are renewed,

you are well rooted, but you grow,

and you conquer the sky without defeat,

owner of your beginning and your ends.
