View of the room addition through a window in the great room. The framing is well under way, but the roof isn't on yet. What really catches my eye though, is the potted night-blooming cereus. As you can see, it was very small; now some of its branches are five feet long, and I really need to do something about it one of these days. I first met this plant in the early 1980s with my mother at a small flea market in Ontario, California. There was this scrawny cutting in a little pot and my mother got all excited and asked if it was a night-blooming cereus. She was so excited! She kept it in a succession of pots on the patio and it grew humongous over the years. It bloomed the first night I spent there following her death, and then I knew why she had been so excited about getting it. The most ethereal and unimaginably beautiful fragrance ever, and for one night only! I took her lovely collection of patio plants down to my father and step-mother's place, where they continued to prosper. When John and I got settled in Tennessee, I brought back a couple of young offsets, and those proceeded to flourish in our house here. When they eventually got altogether unruly, I took a couple of leaf cuttings and rooted them, something I had not done before, and it worked! So, this is a picture of the successful new plants from the leaf cuttings, the third generation descendants of that dinky little cutting my mom bought for maybe a quarter almost thirty years ago.
