"There is no way ACCURATELY to describe this place, the mind... It's a hard place to get to.

It took me many years not only to REACH it, but also to DEFINE it visually."

Exhibition by Roger Ballen

The World According to Roger Ballen is an exhibition of Fotomuseum The Hague NL.

The (American / South African) artist has created a complex of installations, videos and drawings that form a hallucinatory alliance with his photography of the past fifty years.

It's kind of a long story how I ended up taking Roger Ballen and his assistant/studio manager, Marguerite, shopping at the Alameda Flea Market back in May.

But the basic facts are: they were in San Francisco and had heard about the Alameda Point Antiques Faire (aka the Alameda Flea Market) all the way down in South Africa (!) -- and they really, really wanted to go... And I have a car and was willing (happy!) to take them -- not only because I thought it would be interesting to meet and talk with them, and fun to see what kinds of things Roger would want to buy for his very complex and finely crafted photographs, but also because I had never been to that flea market before. Roger proclaimed that it was, hands down, the best flea market he had ever been to -- and he said he has shopped at some of the best flea markets around the world, including the Porte de Clignancourt marché aux puces in Paris. I believe him, because that place was chock full of AMAZING stuff.
