Continuing the series of neo 90s space factions.

The last proper human 90s Space Faction, and I only just realised that their looking for alien fossils was a clue as to the direction Lego would go in the following years. I have never quite been able to work out what their emblem represents, and wondered if the whisps behind the yellow and black arrow had a secret shape in them.

I don't count Roboforce as the sets are so ill designed, the graphic design of the elements is poor, the minifigures are a weak hodgepodge, and they had such limited release - it's obvious that they are an afterthought. I would be interested to know what the story is there...

It's 90s all over again!

I was lucky enough to obtain both Roboforce figs from a local seller (try finding them in Europe!). All three Hydronauts were also there so I did not hesitate even for a second - turned the latter into a female crew as I've been itching to use those hair pieces. Also BW guns for everyone!

I think I will use most of these parts for some custom characters, but I thought they are worthy of a post for nostalgia's sake.

The final week of Mechtober! This week the seed part was a printed slope from the RoboForce sets. I decided to emphasize the gold details in the print by using a bunch of drum lacquered parts in order to avoid this being mistaken as some kind of Blacktron thing. This one might be my favorite mech overall, it deviates from the standard "Explorer" frame in a bunch of interesting ways and its color scheme gives it a nice regal, sinister vibe. And the rubber bands for cables between the hips and chest feel pretty spot-on to the print, too!

Finally rounding out the Rebirth Titans with Mal and Karen Duncan. I’ve had Bumblebee built for almost half a year now and only just now was able to throw in this nifty helmet into my Bricklink cart for an entirely different order.

Rebirth officially ended on December 6th, 2017 with the dropping of the blue and white banner on new comics. The DC Universe as we know is rapidly changing - the end of Dark Nights: Metal brought not only the New Age of Heroes, but also brought back key characters like Martian Manhunter and Hawkgirl into the fold. With the rupture of the Source Wall, this summer’s No Justice event will split the Justice League into four different teams, and an entirely new Justice League will emerge at the end. Both the Titans and the Teen Titans will experience major shifts, and Doomsday Clock will hopefully provide a satisfying and meaningful conclusion for the Flashpoint/Rebirth epic saga. New writers and artists are coming very soon, and in less than a month, we’ll celebrate the 1000th issue of the most famous superhero comic in history.

Going forward, I like to think that the timeline is slowing “snapping back into place,” like a rubber band stretched too far. I hope to see the JSA return to continuity, Wally West retake the mantle of the Flash, and most importantly, for the Big Red Cheese to rejoin the Justice League and receive his own solo series.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on Rebirth overall. Did you like it? What things worked and what things fell flat for you? Favorite titles/writers/artists? Least favorite? Were there any truly bad eggs in the basket? What are you looking forward to in the future for DC?

RoboForce is really underappreciated.

RoboForce is really underappreciated.

A little bonus! Continuing the series of neo 90s space factions.

Reimagining UFO as a human faction. Maybe this could be Neo-Roboforce? They appeared in the same year, after all, not that we Brits knew about them! I really like the UFO minifigures - lovely high quality design work, and a level of detail that Lego hadn't yet attempted (and much higher quality than what was to come from Rock Raiders era into the early 2000s.) The last theme I was really into before my dark ages, though Insectoids appealed to me as an idea, more than the sets actually did...

I've been trying to figure out what toy line this is from? I picked it up for 6$. It looks great for a Hoth play set. I just would like to know what it's from. All that's on the bottom is a set of numbers no brand name on it.

RoboForce is really underappreciated.

Double feature of 1997’s small droid ships, the V-Wing and Cyber Blaster enter the LEGO City!

These tiny old sets were heavy on cool intricate prints. All about the minifigs here, but the V-Wing has some really fun classic space elements and shaping!

‘97 picks up with leg printing, which hadn’t been seen in a space theme since ‘94s Spyrius droid, Major Kartofski. And we’ll see leg prints on their human counterparts next time I look at RoboForce.

Happy to have both the Techdroids from this theme back in my collection, which Techdroid do you like better- red or blue?

1997’s Robo Master, the Big One from the bizarre RoboForce sub-theme!

That neon dome! And all the prints! It’s like a better version the Blacktron 2 pods, but it’s on this weird Beast Wars mecha. And it doesn’t detach to fly off. Bummer.

What does detach to fly off is pretty cool for how simplistic it is: a smaller Unitron Star Hawk II (#1789). A set design from another far superior Space sub-theme.

I don’t mean to hate on RoboForce this much, it looks cool, has tons of prints, neon transparent elements, and great minifigs with leg prints and updated helmet sculpts! All of that is awesome!

But why wasn’t this designed as a spacecraft? It would have been among the best. LEGO hadn’t figured out Mechs in ‘97, but they sure have now.

Final thought, what was the tail thing?

A weapon? A ‘robot’? A charger for the spacecraft?

Toyfinity Robo Force + Zeroids in tan.

This model was originally a hachiroku24 model of the the Nubian Royal Star-ship from Star wars Episode I (The Phantom Menace), as seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/hachiroku24/48924919208/in/dateposted/ I followed his instructions and gave it my own twist with different engines, and an elongated fuselage, along with bumblebee stripes for the official neo-Classic Space look.

The ship is owned by Classic Space Ambassador and vintage 1978 white-suited astronaut Jenny, who uses the ship to conduct meetings with just-discovered worlds to talk to them about membership in the Lego Space Congress. They don't have to join with the Classic Space forces, as they can represent themselves (in the League of Non-Aligned Worlds) or join another force such as the Roboforce Alliance, M-Tron Company, Futuron Generational Holdings, Neo Nexus Force, The UFO and Insectoid Leagues, among many others.

Usually, Jenny travels with a flotilla of other ships representing a smorgasbord of interests such as those listed above from across the Milky Way. (and beyond!) to each new world, where they each have five Galactic-standard minutes to state there case for their league, and why the world in question should join them. The world can then vote to join a established group, not join any and remove itself from the forum completely in self-imposed seclusion, or join the League of Non-Aligned Worlds. (This league of last resort is a patchwork of rebel colonies, drifting moons, mining asteroids, and separate worlds that is sadly the dumping ground for "everyone else" in the Space Congressional system. It is so fractured that they don't even have a appointed leader, but several semi-leaders of different categories of their members. As no-one is above anyone else, it's pure chaos in that section of the bureaucracy!)

1997’s Robo Stalker, another Mech from the strange RoboForce sub-theme!

I’m kind of a fan of the space robot goblin in striped pants, vaguely reminds me of a Beetlejuice getup? Idk, but I dig it.

This set has some seriously unique space elements and a few familiar. This set stands strong as a part’s pack, but it has enough originality to merit its own existence in any retro space collection

Good consoles for both drivers, great transparent orange elements, and even a cool sticker over the torso windshield

This set has all the prints and printed legs for the minifigs, super deluxe for ‘97

Each pilot of the orange faction of RoboForce shares the same face (previously used in Aquanauts’ sub-theme), which is an odd choice considering how many different elaborate prints were used in these sets

The detachable head/craft is good looking, with that large Exploriens’ element for a cockpit, adjustable wings, and two storage containers

By the end of the millenium classic space man with airtanks became more and more rare in LEGO space themes. I was happy to find a RoboForce space minifigure with printed legs (sp067 from set #2153) from 1997 recently. The helmet with breathing nose in trans neon organge and trans neon green is unique for the RoboForce minifigures. The printed head was used in various minifigures from that time, but the printed torso and the printed legs are unique.

This model was originally a hachiroku24 model of the the Nubian Royal Star-ship from Star wars Episode I (The Phantom Menace), as seen here. I followed his instructions and gave it my own twist with bulkier engines, and an elongated fuselage, along with bumblebee stripes for the official neo-Classic Space look. Speaking of engines, these "glow" trans-orange whereas the original model didn't have any afterglow color. I also added radar dish pieces to them, as it wouldn't be classic space without these parts, would it?

The ship is owned by Classic Space Ambassador and vintage 1978 white-suited astronaut Jenny, who uses the ship to conduct meetings with just-discovered worlds to talk to them about membership in the Lego Space Congress. Heritage Class Race Rover

The RoboForce was an obscure venture in which spacemen with stylish headgear piloted awkwardly designed robots and animal-based mecha using rectangular "robodisks". The RoboForce experiment was doomed from the beginning, however, due to its strange designs and poorly planed robots. Even this race rover, entered in the Galactic Terrestrial Rover Racing League suffers from the same lack of support from its investors and design problems, like the undersized wheels from which the Rollerskate gets its name.

Around this same time, the GTR-RL was declining in popularity, and its future was in jeopardy...

For more on the origin of the GTR-RL, watch the video trailer.

The GTR-RL is organized into three classes of racing rovers.

Heritage class rovers are built using only elements available to the theme of the racer. (i.e. a space police 1 race rover would be built using only parts from the 1989 space police theme.) Heritage class rovers represent Lego space themes up through the insectoid theme of 1998-99.

Modern class rovers are built in the same way, but represent Lego space themes from the 2001 theme Life on Mars, through present day space themes.

Unlimited class rovers are built with an unrestricted element palette and can represent Collectible Minifig themes or fan themes such as Pinktron and Suntron, etc

1997’s Robo Raider! Check out this old LEGO Mech from a space sub-theme that I hardly remember!

I was a huge fan of the Space theme through the entirety of the 90’s, and was probably collecting the most LEGO of my childhood around ‘97, but when I came across this sub-theme I have a blind spot.

Exploriens? for sure. Insectoids and UFO? I was all about it. Robo Raiders? Never heard of ‘em.

Enough of my potential forgetful-ness, check out this funky robot.

This whole theme had some pretty rad prints, awesome neon transparent elements, and really cool mini-figs!

The latest State of the Art fighter for the RoboForce. There's nothing like sitting on top of it all and hearing the roaring buzz coming from the front prongs, at least in the atmospheres where sound can flow.

Some of that greeble has a function as the handle of a maintenance hatch.

This is an alt-build using only pieces from the Robo Stalker, 2153. I originally wanted to make a Vic Viper and a separate land vehicle but the focus went into the ship, which also diverted a bit from the usual Viper proportions. Most of the remaining pieces were used for a repair station and rover.

RoboForce is really underappreciated.

This is a Robocruiser from the Maxx Steele Robo Force toy line, I made some minor modifications (such the addition of Psyche Out's wristbands to make the control sticks look like radar extensions), and repurposed it for the Joes.

Fittingly, my Robo Joe custom is one of the figures in the cab. I use him sort of like the Six Million Dollar Man of GI Joe. The head is taken from the real Robo Joe figure, with the torso of Overkill, the arm of a BAT, and legs from Countdown (although you can't see most of that here).

They don't have to join with the Classic Space forces, as they can represent themselves or join another force for good such as the Roboforce Alliance, M-Tron Company, Futuron Generational Holdings, Neo Nexus Force, The UFO and Insectoid Leagues, among many others.

More Retro Space LEGO sets to be featured soon..
