No Zircon sailors in this photo, but I believe I found the general spot where it was taken. The building in the background is what was known at the time as the Vinoy Park Hotel (now the Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Golf Club). The Vinoy was built in 1925 and was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Last year, I spoke with Bill Kirchhoff a couple of times. He seemed quite happy to hear from me and to tell me about his time aboard the Zircon. He rattled off a list of names of guys with whom he recalled serving, and told me further stories about some of the guys whose names I read off to him from my spreadsheet.
I received this photo in February of this year, so I called him to tell him that I had it, along with another one in which he appears. His wife answered the phone and informed me that Bill had died the month before.
