No animals were hurt in this photoshoot

Tom spent hours standing in a canoe and throwing a net catching these. As they were undersized he brought them home for me to photograph and then we threw them back. Lucky prawns. I am not fond of eating seafood and was glad that they were allowed to swim free. But don't you just love the beauty and complexity of these creatures and the way you can see right through them?

After we're done from the work, we had lunch on the way back to Bangkok. They are really big river prawns of the famous restaurant "Ruan Thai Kung Pao" in Ayutthaya. ^_^'

Freshwater prawns sold at street market in Gairkata (India)

I believe those are freshwater prawns (i.e. river shrimps). There are also a few insects that crawled in the mix, but insects are edible too, so no problem!

If you can identify the exact species, please post a Comment!

I just took a break from my long motorcycle journey and strolled around this lively and colorful street market in a small town called Gairkata, in West Bengal.

Cook them Thai Tomyam Soup recipe...then enjoy the hot, sweet, sour, salty flavours of the soup...and have them during a cold night! Can't describe the goodness! Sarawak river prawns are big, cheap and fresh in Kuching, Sarawak.

Lunch @ '奎元馆' [Kui Yuan Guang] (www.hzkyg.com/newEbiz1/EbizPortalFG/portal/html/index.html), the famous "Noodle King of Jiangnan".

A must stop on for any culinary adventurer......and for one who love noodles to bits. At 65RMB a bowl, this is one of Autumn's pricier specials. Loving tender hand-made noodles serenaded by a murky rich umami broth, topped with boiled greens, fresh river prawns and the highlight of autumn, crab flesh and roe.

Utterly decadent. Superbly delicious!

Lunch @ Lou Wai Lou Restaurant (杭州楼外楼-岳王庙店) - one of the top restaurants in Hangzhou.

I first had this dish 10 years ago. It left an impression. The restaurant my ex colleague took me to, served the prawns separately from the tea. The tea was cupped in a glass cup like canister and by lifting a mechanism, the tea slowly seeped out to flavour the bright and springy prawns.

Honestly, despite the 10 years gap, the dish tasted the same. The prawns dominated the taste of the dish. The tea is just a light after thought. But if you like prawns, like I do, the springy texture of the prawns, almost 'al dente' like, is the big reward, achieved only by marinating the prawns with salt, MSG and egg white.

Breakfast @ '奎元馆' [Kui Yuan Guang] (www.hzkyg.com/newEbiz1/EbizPortalFG/portal/html/index.html), the famous "Noodle King of Jiangnan".

This is the signature dish of the noodle restaurant at 42RMB. Firm springy pieces of river eel swam with river prawns among the delectable noodles.

I made the mistake of going for the Autumn special the day before. What can beat crab flesh and roe? Still plenty tasty but unfortunately, suffered an unfair comparison from the high standards of the day before.

As we walked back to our hotel, we passed by some seafood stalls on Tianjin Jie. I should have known that they were touristy gimmicky places, but nevertheless we were too tempted by the cuteness of these mini-lobsters.

They were each about 4 inches (10 cm) in length, but they looked exactly like miniaturized lobsters, claws and all!

Dalian, China

Not very much meat in there. A little tough.

Heather explained to us later that they were river prawn.

Dinner @ "洛阳真不同", a culinary institution in the city, famous for its "Water Banquet" (洛阳水席).

All the soups started to taste the same after a while, even though the main ingredient differs. Here, the soup is a milder version of the one used for the fried dough balls, and slightly more umami. Again, the main taste was tangy and peppery.

But the river prawns were fresh and they were quite enjoyable.

Lunch @ "大清花饺子".

I love the crunch of this dish.

The crunch of the shell was exquisitely moreish; like eating a prawn flavoured potato chips.

Spicy-wise, it wasn't hot but the spices added a lovely aromatic element.
