Another image of the Jewel of the river captured at the beginning of May the sheer speed of these beautiful birds is just amazing.

The Jewel of the river breaks surface through the water with its prey in its beak after a successful dive, not all there dives go according to plan they also have a miss rate which must be frustrating after expelling all that energy but still masters at what they do.

This montage was created from three of my own photographs of a male kingfisher ~ alcedo atthis ~

Photographs taken 28th April, 2014.

Effects achieved in Paintshop Pro utilising masks, layers, custom background and texture.

A female Kingfisher with the last of her successful catch sliding down her throat. Not all dives are rewarded with a capture of food, always lovely to watch and photograph.

The river jewel breaking up through the surface of the water with its catch for all of its incredible efforts, these Kingfishers are just stunning to watch and photograph.

Lovely to watch this male Juvenile Kingfisher for a while fishing from different bushes and trees and catching pretty well for all its efforts. The perfect start to your day watching a king fishing.

A beautiful male Kingfisher busy this morning diving for food with plenty of hits during the early morning sunrise. This catch was one of his best which he juggled round head facing forwards ready to offer to a nearby female who was calling from further down the waters edge, fingers crossed they have paired up.

An image captured of one of these stunning birds showing of its iridescent feathers with such beautiful array of colours in defused sunshine.

My own photograph showing a female kingfisher (alcedo atthis) with a fish that was presented to her by the male.

Custom background my own. Effects achieved with masking and layers in Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2.

Had the pleasure of Junior today a dear little female Kingfisher who dropped in for a visit to my perch as I was enjoying some quality time down by the river. Bless she landed to far down the perch to start of with but after a little while got the hang of where she should sit, I wondered why she didn't dive for any fish ! but then this happened about to regurgitate a large peanut seized pellet which can take between 6-10 hours to form which is the remains of bones and scales of the fish they may produce one or two of these a day. I have seen them do this in the past but never photographed it.

At last tried to go for some flight shots of the Jewel of the river and boy I knew they where super fast but looking through the view finder of the camera and trying to anticipate its path and trying to keep up with its sheer speed is just mind blowing, but pretty pleased with my first efforts.

The master of fishing the stunning Kingfisher doing what it does best diving into the waters below from various heights in order to capture its prey beneath. Loved the way the camera captured the water droplets and the tail flip on this particular image.

A male kingfisher about to leave its perch after a rest and a preen just after a few unsuccessful dives for fish on this occasion.

Life contains many precious moments, some of which are almost magical. That is exactly how I feel whenever I see a kingfisher (alcedo atthis). This one is perching beside the Grand Union Canal.

This is my own photograph, with added creativity using Ultra Fractal 5.04 and Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2. This includes subtle use of Redfield's Fractalius.

The beauty of the kingfisher ~alcedo atthis ~

This breeding kingfisher (holding a fish 'head forwards', to give to her young), was photographed at RSPB Rainham Marshes from a hide and through camouflage netting.

I had the privilege to get many studies of this female kingfisher at Lackford Lakes on Suffolk. (You'll notice some other poses of her in my Flickr page cover photo).

For this image, (and gleefully ignoring 'rule of thirds'), she is shown cropped, as a central sphere of colour. The fact that her vibrant hues are an 'illusion' makes this species, for me, all the more magical :)

Kingfisher (alcedo atthis) beside the Grand Union Canal, not far from Foxton Locks (Leicester Arm).

Some bullfinches were perching very close to this kingfisher (see below).

Taken at 400mm focal length - cropped. Tried to get closer, but I was spotted!

From a series of FIVE SHOTS of a male kingfisher that I just happened to see on a walk along the Lancaster Canal, near Aldcliffe. It was a bitterly cold afternoon.

Wasn't actually birdwatching as such. Did not have my normal zoom with me (oh no!), but did my best to capture the essence of the scene. It certainly shows how diminutive these beautiful little birds are.

Here, the kingfisher is poised to dive. (It did catch a fish).

Here, you can just see the small fish that the Kingfisher has caught. I could kick myself for not having my usual 400mm zoom. Still great to see, though! :)

I heard this Kingfisher before I saw it. Nice to see one on a tree stump, instead of behind branches! It sat there for a couple of minutes, before going in for some tasty prey.

Here, the kingfisher does its usual lightning fast exit from the water. It has definitely caught a fish, which you can see more clearly in one of the other shots.
