''Chamerion latifolium (formerly Epilobium latifolium) is a species of flowering plant in the evening primrose family known by the English common names dwarf fireweed and river beauty willowherb. It has a circumboreal distribution, appearing throughout the northern regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including subarctic and Arctic areas such as snowmelt-flooded gravel bars and talus, in a wide range of elevations. This is a perennial herb growing in clumps of leaves variable in size, shape, and texture above a woody caudex. The leaves are 1 to 10 centimeters long, lance-shaped to oval, pointed or rounded at the tips, and hairy to hairless and waxy. The inflorescence is a rough-haired raceme of nodding flowers with bright to deep pink, and occasionally white, petals up to 3 centimeters long. Behind the opened petals are pointed sepals. The fruit is an elongated capsule which may exceed 10 centimeters in length.

This arctic plant provides valuable nutrition for the Inuit, who eat the leaves raw, boiled with fat, or steeped in water for tea, the flowers and fruits raw, and as a salad with meals of seal and walrus blubber. Every part of this plant is edible, tasting much like spinach, and is also known in the Canadian tundra as River Beauty. It is the national flower of Greenland, where it is known by the Greenlandic name niviarsiaq, which means "little girl". Taken in Skargaard Fjord, east Greenland.

Right along Hwy 3 at the south end of the tour loop, is a hidden oasis that makes a great place to stop for a picnic, or fly fish. Enjoy the Alberta scenery. The Crowsnest River takes a 12-meter tumble to the canyon below.

This beautiful flower is a relative of rosebay willowherb which is so well known in the UK. However Arctic Riverbeauty is only found in Europe growing in Iceland, where it makes a spectacular sight. In fact the display at this place was so good that the coach we were on stopped especially to let passengers off to have a look at the flowers!

Also called Riverbeauty. Broad-leaved willow herb is edible and can be eaten raw, cooked or made into tea.

Artic riverbeauty. Epilobium latifolium.

Found at high elevations. It's the much more common Fireweed stripped down to the bare essentials -- 4" high instead of 4'. The individual flowers are the same size, but there are only a few per plant. Here's www.flickr.com/photos/anitagould/19555601/in/set-152635/ a landscape shot with these flowers.

Formerly known as Epilobium latifolium, now reclassified as Chamerion.

Here you can see Eyrarrós. (Epilobium latifolium, Arctic Riverbeauty) Those beautiful flowers can be found in dry areas on isolated places up in the highlands.

This is an American plant, but Iceland is the only European country where it lives.
