Penguins are both timid and fearless. On land, these Gentoo Penguins roam relatively fearless, with no predators. In the water however, sea lions, leopard seals, and killer whales enjoy a tasty penguin snack. Killer whales work with the other members of their pod to coordinate attacks, going so far to try to bump into the ice from below to try to knock a penguin off.

When penguins get close to water, be it at the edge of an ice berg or some rocks like here, there always seems to be some hesitation. Inevitably, one brave (or clumsy) penguin will dive into the water. Within moments, all the other neighboring penguins will follow suit.

It can be pretty comical watching these little hesitation rituals play out. In this case, the penguins were walking in one direction, and would then change their mind and start walking back. After going back and forth a few times, they eventually leapt into the water.

Fenchurch Street, City Of London

In 2013 the Road Safety Foundation identified the A537 as the most dangerous road in Britain. This tight, 12 km stretch of single carriageway winds its way over the hills from Macclesfield to Buxton and is busy with heavy goods vehicles, buses, tourists and daredevil bikers. Named after the summit- top pub, the Cat & Fiddle has steep drop-offs, tight bends, random fog, and is lined for much of its length with unyielding dry stone walls...

No problems spoiled our scenic views from the the number 58 bus this day...

At the risk of overdoing it, I'm posting a second image of this lovely storm - this one without the dramatic lightning, but with some great structure lit from lightning within it.

In May/June 2024 I went storm chasing for the third time. If you'd like, you can read about my trip in the blog post on my website.

You can see all my storm chasing images from my 2017, 2018 and 2024 chases in this album.

BTW, both the boys share toys but Baobao seems to like this one more than Beibei.

It's been nearly 3yrs since i visited this location and this time i managed to reach the very top, it was definately worth the extra effort.

I probably won't revisit the top again as i'm happy with my take on this view and the risk of falling on the narrow steep walkway is pretty hairy without a stick !

A few years ago, I took a chance before work on a sunny Sunday, and headed for the West End of the B&M. The risk paid off after only a short wait when I caught eastbound 16R emerging from Hoosac Tunnel. Here, they cross the Deerfield River to enter East Deerfield yard and conclude an easy 30-mile chase.

NS power certainly wouldn't be my first choice, but on the West End you take what you can get, especially when the light's good.

"Risk/Reward"

Over the past couple days I've spent some time in beautiful Kelowna to hang out with friends Jed and Lexy and do some creative shooting. Here's one of our collective efforts, and it might be an all-time fave.

This image took some risk to get to; we had to find our way down a really steep canyon (think ropes and ladders to get down it was so steep), but definitely ended in reward: it was one of the most incredible locations I've had the opportunity to photograph in, and conditions couldn't have been better. A rare, cloudy overcast Kelowna sky to help out the long exposures (this is a half-second effort), and just as we finished up and started out journey up and out of the canyon, the lightening and rain arrived.

A big thanks to Jed and Lexy for going the extra mile to make this shoot happen.
