Knowing your risk is central to
reducing your vulnerability. This training session for
villagers in Natutu village on Fiji's main island near
the town of Ba is building community awareness and
understanding of risk. The training covers how to
prepare for and respond to floods, cyclones,
earthquakes and tsunamis: where to flee to stay
above the water, what supplies to prepare
beforehand, what radio stations and mobile phone
messages to watch out for and the importance of
establishing a village committee to oversee disaster
risk reduction and preparedness.

A Mine Risk Education session takes place at a nursery school in Misrata, Libya. Children are particularly at risk from accidents with shells, munitions and other explosive weapons and making sure children know what to do if they encounter a strange object when out playing can save lives.
Since April 2011 more than 35,000 children have attended risk education sessions run by Handicap International in Libya. You can learn more about our activities to protect civilians living with the legacy of war in Libya here.

Libya, 2011: Participants at a risk awareness training pay close attention to the Handicap International teachers who are explaining risks along their roads, in schools as well in residential areas. The fighting in Libya has left highly dangerous munitions that are hazards for Libya's civilians, as well as humanitarian aid workers. The situation on the ground remains fluid, with civilians facing daily threats from these explosive remnants of war.
This week has seen the official end of the conflict in Libya with the capture of Bani Walid and Sirte. The resultant explosive remnant of war contamination from the conflict will however continue to hinder recovery efforts in this early post conflict stage.
The UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) is part of the new United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). UNMAS coordinates the Joint Mine Action Coordination Team and is working in close partnership with UNICEF and ICRC as well as Mine Action NGOs such as Handicap International .

This photo was taken on market day in the village of Niono circle in Mali. A member of our Mine Risk Education team distributes safely leaflets to people. These leaflets are an effective way of communicating the danger posed by landmines and other explosive weapons in the area, which saw heavy fighting between the Malian army and armed groups. Recently 475 explosive weapons were found over the course of just one month.

Mine Risk Education is about saving lives. Knowing how to recognise explosive weapons like landmines and cluster munitions, and how to behave in a life-threatening situation can make the biggest difference of all.
Here are three of our risk education officers in Mozambique, including Samuel (left) and Lucas (right). In communities affected by landmines, they go from door-to-door and conduct public awareness sessions so that people, especially children, have the information they need to stay safe.

Samuel describes the difference risk education can make: “In the past, when a person would trigger a mine, the other would run to help him and trigger another one. Then you had two victims. Now it is different.”
Watch this short film about the fight against landmines in Mozambique.
A great way to learn is by playing. Students from a school in Panama play “Risk Land,” a game aimed at increasing
awareness on how to reduce disaster risk. UNISDR,
together with UNICEF, created Risk Land to get
players to think about how one decision can have
unintended consequences in other areas.
