I'm on the X-country train from Southampton to Birmingham eavesdropping on a conversation about risk assessment. One is taking the other through a check list. I am not that enthusiastic about this, but it could be that as a result of what they're planning a life might be saved or injury averted.
Considering today's news at CSX. : ( I'd be interested in hearing what others have to say about Hunter Harrison?
Individual judgments or assessments of risk may be affected by psychological, ideological, religious, or otherwise subjective factors, which impact rationality of the process. There is a tendency for individuals to be less rational when risks and exposures concern themselves as opposed to others, and to underestimate risks that are voluntary or where the individual sees themselves as being in control.

Abstract:
A woman is standing next to a lecturn, pointing at a screen with the words "Audiovisual laboratory safety programs" projected by a slide projector. The programs available for borrowing are: Effective use of the laminar flow biological safety cabinet, Hazard control in the animal laboratory, and Risk assessment in cancer virus research. The number of slides and length of recording is given for each program, and there are extensions to call to borrow the programs.

The mindmap shows the obligations a controller has to fulfil under the General Data Protection Regulation. These are
- finding a legal basis for processing personal data
- obeying the data protection principles
- fulfilling data subject's rights
- doing risk assessments
- implement technical and organisational measures
- fulfilling information and communication obligations
- demonstrating compliance (and therefore documenting everything)
and much more...
If you count each of these obligations, you might count 68 obligations.
What risk assessment?
Anyone considered the risks caused by a letter/parcel i.e. from China, passing through the various postal services and being delivered by hand to the recipient by the postman/delivery-man including Amazon etc. Are they exempt from track and trace too ?! How many premises on their rounds etc., Just doesn't make any sense.
House of Cards — When it comes to earthquakes, a house of cards is really any structure that isn't built to resist the effects of ground shaking. The well known statement "Earthquakes don't kill people, buildings do" highlights the need to make our communities more earthquake resilient. The impact of earthquakes on public safety and the national economy can be reduced through improvement of the built-environment to resist earthquake effects such as ground shaking. Reduction of the economic impact on individuals and the nation can also be reduced by additional means such as earthquake insurance.
Improving the ability of the built environment to resist earthquakes requires research in at least three areas: (1) quantification of earthquake effects, such as ground shaking, into a form suitable for use by design engineers (e.g., structural and geotechnical engineers), (2) improvement of design practices, and (3) knowledge of the types of damage that occur as a consequence of earthquakes. USGS seismic hazard maps form the basis, and are an integral tool, for seismic provisions in building codes and for risk models used in insurance rate structures.

Email from me - Feb 14, 2009 4:48 AM - to C in America: Dear C. So glad to hear from you…We live amid a crisis none of us has encountered before. Life seems fine for us but all around storm clouds seem to be gathering and many more are clearly caught up in the effects of this historic economic hurricane – one that I realise has been brewing a long time. Kindest regards, Simon
Reply from C: Dear Simon, Same here; we are feeling nothing yet except for a freezing in University contributions to our retirement funds. Otherwise, we are waiting to find out the impact of lending restrictions on our enrolments and in the meantime...firing some of our adjuncts. The times lend themselves to philosophical reflection. All this unreality that we have been living in - here in America at least - has hit bottom. A good thing but not one that rewards prudent people. Enjoy Corfu. Greece, no matter what, is a beautiful place to wake up in the morning...My very best to you, C
The sun waits to rise into a cloudless sky. C remarks from far away on the Pacific coast. “Enjoy Corfu. Greece, no matter what, is a beautiful place to wake up in the morning" but I’m as superstitious as any atheist about reflections on the rewards of fortunae. The names of people who rejoice in their luck are selected by a divine factotum and placed face-down on a gilded dish that passes around the table on timeless Olympus. Amid merriment, each God selects the human whose fate it is to be their post-prandial plaything. Here a brilliant climber says “There’s a window for the summit at dawn”; there a mother says “Our child is so perfect”; and over there a father says “There are police officers, a man and a woman, at the door. Must be about those parking fines”; and here a wife who says “no need to hold the ladder darling. Go and make us a cup of tea”; and there, in the deep ocean, an exhausted sailor says “We’re through the worst” but see this one, here’s a gem “The war will be over by Christmas”, but what about that popinjay Confederate General who said “They couldn’t hit an elephant at this dist…” Far below a fisherman on the Peneios and a woman waiting for a train at Litokhoro know they hear, not the rumble of endless thunder reverberating among the peaks of Olympus, but laughter.'
A picture worth a thousand words - well, I reckon it would have taken about a thousand words to describe all the hazards in a risk assessment anyway :-)

There were many interesting items on show at the Big Boys Toys show.
St Peter's Centre is a 100 year old building that has been brought back to life to serve the community of Loughborough.
On the table is a Health & Safety Risk Assessment. With many moving items at the show, some paraffin powered, I was pleased to see that the risks had identified and items were in place if something happened (i.e. damp towels for dowsing flames or cooling skins burns).

A risk assessment is simply a careful examination of what, in your work, could cause harm to people, so that you can weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm. Workers and others have a right to be protected from harm caused by a failure to take reasonable control measures.
Accidents and ill health can ruin lives and affect your business too if output is lost, machinery is damaged, insurance costs increase or you have to go to court. You are legally required to assess the risks in your workplace so that you put in place a plan to control the risks.
Oh, I love a good risk assessment. Erosion's good - but what of the "other hazards"? Attack by duck perhaps?

EXPORT-IMPORT BANK: Enhancements Needed in Loan Guarantee Underwriting Procedures and for Documenting Fraud Processes
Most socio-environmental and public health impacts of importing and exporting processes are invisible to consumers in importing countries and to the international exporters of waste. EJOLT aims to expose new trends in toxic international trade and the roles that emerging economies like Brazil and India play in this field. This work will build on the work in EJOLT done on nuclear, mining & shipbreaking, oil & gas, and biomass & land. We will support participant Environmental Justice Organisations in their knowledge acquisition and in their actions related to health impacts, with emphasis on risk assessment and issues of uncertainty.

A pizza company has defended its decision to use “human billboards” as part of its advertising campaign after coming under fire.
The Domino’s Pizza spokesman explained: “All our wobble boarders are aged 16 or over and are paid at or above the minimum wage".
“For those that choose to wobble board, they follow our lists of recommendations and advice on safe wobble boarding and call into the store at regular intervals, take the appropriate breaks, keep hydrated and most importantly stay safe".
“A wobble boarder’s safety, security and wellbeing, along with that of the general public, are a top priority for Domino’s franchisees and a full risk assessment has been carried out in relation to wobble boarding".
“Wobble boarding is an unusual marketing tool but it does work extremely well. We realise it’s not to everyone’s taste but it is a key part of our marketing activity and we take every care in looking after all our wobble boarders.”
