Second shot of my vacation sunrise series! Obviously I didn't sleep in much on this vacation!

We must have been ambitious vacationers on July 1, 1995, as we made this fine photo of BN train No. 629, descending the 1% grade through Lynch Coulee east of Trinidad, Washington at 6:48 a.m.
You can see the uphill right of way on the opposite side of the coulee, a mile or two above "Trinidad Loop". No doubt we were tired of EMD SD40-2 locomotives at the time, as they were on every train we photographed that weekend.
A marker cairn near the foot of the final rise to the summit of Cairn Gorm sits by the side of the path we're following through the rocks and boulder fields as very little can grow and survive at this altitude.
Cairn Gorm, the mountain from which the Cairngorm mountain range gets its name, stands at 1245 meters (4085 feet) and is my 4th Munro of the season, my 27th in total. The hike (no bike this time) sees me covering a circuit of just over 7 miles and making an elevation gain of around 762 meters (2500 feet).
The more I stray, the less I fear

Yesterday, I was on a walk with my brother and his wife and of course I had to take my camera with me. I just took a few quick shots since I didn't want them to wait for me for too long and this one turned out to look pretty nice. I hope you like it!

Shown here are three residential high-rise on the Rotterdam Boompjes. Shot from the Ibis bridge crossing the Scheepmakershaven. Over the past 15 years, this major Rotterdam thoroughfare has transformed - residential housing has made a comeback in the city centre, accompanied by, albeit small, balconies.
On the left: Terraced tower (OZ Architect, 2021), the high rises in the middle are 'Clubhouse Boompjes' (Team V Architectuur, 2025) and on the right is 'De Maas' office tower (Koldewijn-Drexhage, 1988).
The backstory about the return of residential housing in the city centre: In the 1980s, it became evident that the strictly functionalistic urban design of the post-World War II Rotterdam city centre no longer met the needs of its residents. In the first post-war decades, the redevelopment enhanced functionality, offering a clear break from the congestion and other development problems of the pre-war city centre. And its morphology offered the symbolism of a brave new world. However, due to the 60s and 70s social-economic boom and the rise of consumerism, the strict segregation of living, business and administration made the city's heart feel like a place that didn't seem to live and breathe. It was simply too high on business and too low on living and recreation. One of the programs to rectify this was the R'dam high-rise policy - the insertion of a series of high-density up-market apartment buildings in and near the city centre.

On the right and behind it are the highrises of the Wijnhaveneilend with the 'Red Apple'. On the left is the Clubhouse Boompjes (under construction, Team V architects).
The ´Alena´Rhine cruise boat at the bottom of the frame offered a nice counterpoint to all this unbridled verticalism. ;-) To the right of its bow is the (of course, yellow) finish of the second stage of the Tour de France Femmes.

I love it when the sun disappears behind clouds, especially when rays radiate out through the gaps. It mirrors the radiating rock runnels on the beach. Rise and Shine is by The Felice Brothers. I'm off to Cowbridge today to discuss my possible exhibition next year, so that should be fun. Then there'll be a panic to produce more material etc.

I'm hurting all over. The last training session was quite taxing and I feel like I went twelve rounds with Mike Tyson. As of this morning, I'm up early and recuperating for tonight's wrestling meet-up. For now, I'll be needing some ice. Lots of it.
