It is situated in a wonderful location above Traunkirchen am Traunsee and is uninhabited for many years. Its garden has always fascinated me with its morbid charm. It is actually private property and fenced in, but if you want you can find an inconspicuous but much used hole in the hedge. Miraculously, this place has been spared from any vandalism until today and presents itself as a stroke of luck for photographers.

Heldenplatz (Heroes' Square) was designed in the nineteenth century by Gottfried Semper as the central square of the Kaiserforum, a project which was never fully realized due to the collapse of the Habsburg Empire in 1918.

In the direction of the Ringstrasse Heldenplatz is framed by a wide triumphal arch, known as the Äussere Burgtor or Heldentor. The arch was designed by Peter von Nobile, and erected between 1821 and 1824.

The arch commemorates the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 where Austria and its allies defeated the outnumbered troops of Napoleon. The arch was originally built into the city's defensive walls and now stands a bit lost in the expansive square.(aviewoncities.com)

The City Hall is one of the most splendid amongst the numerous monumental buildings along Vienna's Ringstrasse. Designed by Friedrich Schmidt (1825-1891), it was erected between 1872 and 1883. The architecture of the Ringstrasse is dominated by historicism. In Historicism various stylistic elements of the past were combined into a style in its own right. Friedrich Schmidt however orientated himself on one particular epoch. The City Hall was built in gothic style, with a tower similar to gothic cathedrals. The gothic era saw the growth of the cities and the emergence of an urban bourgeoisie.

Today the City Hall is the head office of Vienna's municipal administration. (City of Vienna website)

A trip to Vienna

All those who cannot take a holiday may follow me on a tour through Vienna. Past the famous sights, but perhaps you will also discover sights worth seeing off the beaten track …

Vienna's Castle Theatre is one of the most important theatres in Europe. It is located opposite the Town Hall on Vienna's Ringstrasse and was built by Gottfried Semper and Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer from 1874 to 1888 in the Italian High Renaissance style. The interior features lavish baroque furnishings. In Vienna, the theatre is called "the castle" for short, the ensemble members "castle actors".

Once upon a time we all walked on the golden road. It was a fair highway, through the Land of Lost Delight; shadow and sunshine were blessedly mingled, and every turn and dip revealed a fresh charm and a new loveliness to eager hearts and unspoiled eyes. - The Golden Road by L.M. Montgomery

Jahrhunderts einige Prachtbauten errichtet.

Until the mid-19th century, the area of today's Schwarzenbergplatz formed part of the southern glacis. This military-defensive open space was located in front of the city wall and was crossed by the (open) Wien River. After the city wall was demolished (1858–1863), very large areas within its circular area and on the glacis in front of it became available for development. Similar to the palaces on the Ringstrasse, several magnificent buildings were erected on this prospective building land in the second half of the 19th century.

www.island-ringstrasse.de/thingvellir-nationalpark-island/

Already a thousand years ago there was a church here which was at the disposal of the Alþingi visitors for their services. The church, which can be entered today, dates back to 1859. Right next door there is a small cemetery where only a handful of people found their last rest. Nearby, courts were held and the death sentences were carried out.

The Alþingi (Althing) is the parliament of Iceland. It has followed the unicameral system since 1991. The Althing dates back to the year 930, making it the second oldest existing parliament in the world or the oldest independent state after the Faroese Løgting, whose origins date back to the year 900.
