The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is seen with the NASA/German Research Centre for Geosciences GRACE Follow-On spacecraft onboard, Monday, May 21, 2018, at Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The mission will measure changes in how mass is redistributed within and among Earth's atmosphere, oceans, land and ice sheets, as well as within Earth itself. NASA’s Low-Earth Orbit Flight Test of an Inflatable Decelerator (LOFTID) arrives for processing inside Building 836 at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California Monday, Aug. 15, 2022. LOFTID is a rideshare launching with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Joint Polar Satellite System-2 (JPSS-2) satellite. Teams working at Astrotech will prepare LOFTID to mate it with JPSS-2. After that a team will stack the encapsulated spacecraft and re-entry vehicle on a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V 401 rocket. The technology demonstration mission is slated to test new capabilities for landing payloads, including in a thinner atmosphere like that on Mars. This brick Tudor-like cottage, built in the late 1920s, is perhaps a half mile downhill from our place in a block full of cute houses with charming little front yard gardens. My wife and I were on a walk with our youngest, we'd stopped and waited while he ran back to the house for his bike helmet because he wanted to use an electric rideshare scooter we'd come upon. Since he has broken his wrist two years in a row (the first time in the mountains, the second time early spring during school recess), a helmet seemed well-advised (granted, he's only allowed to putter along the sidewalk at a snail's pace).
Summertime is here. I feel self-conscious admitting this, but summer is easily my least favorite season. I'm sure there's something wrong with me :-) It's not that enjoyable things don't happen for me from June through August. It's the heat, maybe. The wildfires. The extra throngs of tourists in Seattle. The discombobulation of schedules with the kids being out of school. And it's probably my least-productive time for photography.
God, I hate myself right now. I don't even know why. This feeling follows four or give pretty good days or normalcy. I don't mean Five Points rocking out to Villanova normalcy, but a normalcy just the same. If that was my default emotional state, I could live like that right up until the point the diabetes gets me.
If there is a day to feel crappy, today is the day. Regardless of what the calendar tells us, this is a late February/early March type of wind and rain. Weather.com says it is 57 degrees, but for me, 57 degrees is shorts and short sleeves weather. With the wind and the rain, it feels 20 degrees colder easily. I'm not one to complain about cold weather, but I have never claimed not to be one to complain about rain and wind.
It is just me and Lexie this weekend as my housemates are visiting family and friends for the “unofficial start of summer.” I'm in an ill mood. Lexie likes to go where ever I go when it's just the two of us. But instead of following where I go, she wants to lead the way and look over his back to see which way I am going. And I am pretty much standing there mostly because her fat ass is in my way, LOL. I guess I'm not much of a dog person.
My blood sugar has been pretty good lately, but I started up an old bad habit again. I was drinking a lot of Coke and Mt. Dew. For a while, I was keeping it to eating out or when we'd stop in a store on a road trip. Then I started buying two six packs, one of each. The other day when I bought the 15 pack of Dew in a can. I knew it was time to stop. I don't know f that is contributing to my mood today, but I am very pissed off. I just want some of that sugary confection!
One thing I had planned to do was to work on my photo albums. The one I have in progress was supposed to be a “Places” album, but I realized I had badly miscalculated the number of “Places” I had printed off. So I decided that I could use some train shots, which I had initially planned not to do for this album, if the shot placed the train somewhere anyone could recognize. (At least if they had been there, I guess.) That only went so far and now I question why I used the biggest album on something I don't have as many shots of.
Meanwhile, I have all kinds of L&C shots from basically all eras of the past 25 years as the end cab switchers gave way to Gps and now the Gps are giving way to six axle power. On thing I don't have? An album to put them in. That was some serious lack of planning there. The album I do have can't be finished until I get more prints (arriving Tuesday) and the one I need to buy has way more than enough photographs to go inside!
I was thinking of getting a rideshare to Walmart to see if they have a good photo album I can use. But I have looked there and can never have found a decent one. There are two Walmarts I can rideshare to. One is in the big metropolis of Red Bank. That's the store I can never find them at. The other is about as far away in another direction in Cayce, but it's a neighborhood market. No photo albums at all. So I guess I am stuck here. One thing both Walmarts would have? Coke and Mt. Dew!
I'm really lonely this weekend. Oh, yeah. That concert I wanted to go to is tonight. K Flay and grandson. Look them up@

Technicians move NASA's Low-Earth Orbit Flight Test of an Inflatable Decelerator (LOFTID) re-entry vehicle over to a turnover fixture for prelaunch processing inside Building 836 at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Aug. 19, 2022. Dedicated to the memory of Bernard Kutter, LOFTID is a technology demonstration mission aimed at validating inflatable heat shield technology for atmospheric re-entry. This technology could enable missions to other planetary bodies, as well as allow NASA to return heavier payloads from low-Earth orbit. LOFTID is a rideshare launching with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Joint Polar Satellite System-2 (JPSS-2) satellite. MSP Airport traffic is down by 95% due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Here's a look around the Airport on the eve of Easter weekend, a typically busy travel time.
3331 on the 54 to Mall of America. Seen here arriving at MSP T1/Lindbergh upper level. Typically this area would be packed with rideshare cars jostling for the primes spots near doors 5 and 6. However there was only one car that passed through today.
Metro Transit recently began displaying the 'essential trips only' message on the destination signs.

Making the trek to Madison via the Craigslist rideshare and the kindness of a truck driver, Spencer can now catch up with his friends. Living in a small town outside of Denver Colorado, he frequently makes trips via bus to Boulder to get out and play the guitar. As his only job, and only source of income in brings him the most simple form of happiness. He defines his way of life as "homeless with a house," as he has a roof over his head but the money doesn't flow. While staying in Madison, Spencer plans on busking out on State and enjoying the weather before it gets too hot. As he explained to me, Colorado can get hot too but the humidity tops off around 10%. I've always lived in the Midwest so I'm not entirely sure what little humidity feels like.
When he's not playing the guitar, Spencer has been listening to the radio tour of Bob Weir & Ratdog (side project for the former bass player of the Grateful Dead). As fate may have it, Bob and Ratdog are in town on June 12th for a concert; and yes Spencer has a ticket. He explained to me that the biggest problem for music today is there isn't enough bass. While some has bass, it's turning to electronic and new age and not remember the roots from where it came.
As has become a habit for me, I asked Spencer a question rattling around in my head, "What would you take from Wisconsin and bring back to Colorado if you could do it." His answer was simple and one word (well technically two) "The lakes." While Colorado is blessed to have the mountains and they are very beautiful, Spencer wishes there were more open bodies of water. An honorable request, as I think sometimes people take water for granted. In parting he left me with a couple quotes about growing up, which he he holds close "Growing up was a term created by a sad man, because everyone else was having too much fun." and "Grow up or play guitar."
I handed a business card off for him to hopefully find this photo, and now the write up. As it's required to include, this photo/story wouldn't have been possible without the awesomeness of the 100 strangers group. Check it out if you're looking for more interesting people!

A recycled colour from the 2020 Case F now appearing in the latest MBX Airport five vehicle set. What was once considered a "Golden Era" casting now looks fairly lame when it was retooled to be a Taxi. No front or rear detailing and the cheapest looking sign i've seen. Found recently at Tesco. Mint and boxed.

New Service called SE/URF hopes to pick up the slack now that behemoths UBER and LYFT have had their wings clipped by new NYC Regulations. Denied investment cash by Silicon Valley Venture Capitalists due to its "low tech" approach, the start-up managed to find sufficient seed money by going through the seat cushions of their initial fleet of 'vehicles' donated by family and friends. The company is starting a slow and somewhat bumpy roll-out this week.

Pretty incredible market share gain, despite 180 contenders raising many billions of investment!
Why? None of the others are cost competitive. SpaceX offers EDLP of $5K/kg and others like RL and Virgin Orbit are $35,000/kg and up. Starship will be around $100/kg.
As for volume, the first half of 2021 already exceeds 2020. 62% of the satellites launched in 1H 2021 are part of the Starlink broadband network.
Just gave the opening keynote for the Smallsat Symposium this morning.
The engine on the left is an early prototype rom Astra. It is 3D-printed from the Inconel superalloy and has integral regenerative cooling channels on the inside.
Here is one of the slides that was hard to read. Note: 180 smallsat launch companies, and with cost/kg forecasts that are much higher than the $5K/kg EDLP for a SpaceX rideshare. The image on my laptop is the latest stack, with 143 satellites sent on a Falcon 9.

Baggage Claim Escalator
LAX Delta Terminal 5
1 World Way
Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California 90045
On Thursday evening June 20 I went to LAX to pick up some relatives returning from a trip to Hawaii. I took this while waiting for them to come to the Baggage Claim area in Terminal 5.
The area is under construction so it is somewhat stark looking. However LAX always seems to be under construction because it has been at or over capacity since the early 1970s. Each phase of construction is never enough, and is always screwed up by politics. When they put in the train system they did not bring it into LAX because the cabbies (who suck in LA), bus companies, car rental companies, and Van rideshare companies all teamed up to ensure there would be no easy access to the train.
