Auckland, New Zealand

My nephew, Jake. The afternoon prior to my arrival in Vancouver Jake was riding his bike to return some DVD's to the store just 3 blocks from his apt. Momentarily he was distracted, putting something into his pocket. In that moment the car in front of him breaked. Jake slammed his bike's breaks on and somersaulted over the handlebars. Landed on his head. He was NOT wearing his safety helmet ! A 3 block jaunt.......don't need a helmet to go 3 blocks. Wrong! He split his head open from forehead to crown and fractured the Cervical 1 vertebrae of his spine. He missed spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair by a hair's breadth. The stitches look like an alien mohawk across the top of his head and he's going to be wearing that brace 24 hours a day for up to 12 weeks. This pic was taken less than 24 hours after the accident. Looks upbeat, doesn't he? That's because he feels blessed. In that split second, as he was travelling over the handlebars, he knew without doubt that he was going to land on his head and saw him- self in that wheelchair. He knows he got off lucky. All you bike riders out there .... wear a helmet. Always. 3 blocks or 3 miles. Whether it's law in your country or not. Jake may have used up all the luck available for bare heads on bikes. Ride safely, bikers, please.

NB : Jake is doing well. Getting on with his life in Vancouver...as much as the severe limitations of the neck brace and its conditions allow. The fact that he is young, strong & healthy is in his favour for a full recovery. Don't think he'll ride without a helmet again
