"Distinguished visitor to Psychology.
Professor Richard Shiffrin, Luther Dana Waterman Research Professor of Psychology at the University of Indiana, USA, visited the Department of Psychology on December 6 and 7 to discuss his work on mathematical models of human memory with Dr Richard Heath, Senior Lecturer in Psychology.
Professor Shiffrin presented a seminar entitled Separate and Composite Storage Models for Human Memory, in which he provided evidence that some of the recent holographic models for human memory, which suppose that information is stored in memory by superposition, may have difficulty in accounting for data obtained in experiments involving the recognition of familiar words.
Professor Shiffrin, who is the director of a new cognitive science program at the University of Indiana, discussed curriculum ideas with members of the Departments of Computer Science and Psychology.
The departments will cooperate with the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Linguistics, Neuroscience and Philosophy in the inaugural undergraduate course in cognitive science which will be offered in 1989."
Pictured: Professor Shiffrin is shown discussing computer models with Dr Heath.

This photo appeared in the News, Volume 12, Number 15, September 1 to 15, 1986. The text was:
"New $93,000 research project on RSI
Dr Richard Heath, senior Lecturer in Psychology, has received an inaugural research grant form Worksafe Australia to devise an early warning system for the prevention and pre-clinical diagnosis overuse injury in keyboard operators. The grant of $44,171 for the fist year of the project was one of eight awarded to researchers throughout Australia for the investigation of overuse injury in workers. This is a high priority research area in the Commonwealth’s research programme in Occupational Health and Safety and an intensive effort is being made to decrease the risk of injury in a variety of occupations. With compensation and insurance expenditure measured in millions of dollars, any improvement in the safety of the workplace for occupations involving rapid movements will have important economic implications for the community.
Dr Heath’s Project, which is expected to last three years, involves several relate phases. Initially a computer algorithm will be devised which detects a statistically reliable change in the average keypress rite and warns the keyboard operate of any decrease in performance probably due to the onset of fatigue. The computer will than determine a suitable rest period at the conclusion of which the operator may continue data entry.
In the next phase of the project the computer algorithm will be used as a testing device for the evaluation of keypress behaviour in the people who have had to discontinue work due to overuse injury and who wish to return to the workplace following medical treatment for their injuries. This programme will also used as a diagnostic device for people who suspect that they may be suffering from overuse injury.
The computer programme will also be used to evaluate the efforts of ergonomic improvements in the workplace on fatigue onset in keyboard operators. Such improvements involve the proper use of ergonomic furniture and use of new keyboard designs such as split keyboards for each hand.
The basic premise of this approach to research on overuse injury is that the techniques of laboratory-based experimental psychology, such as computer-controlled data acquisition and the application of mathematical models, permits the transfer of an extensive knowledge of human motor behaviour to an important problem resulting from the impact of the microcomputer revolution in the workplace. It is expected that the subjective reality of overuse injury will be reflected in performance decrements observed in monitored keyboard operation, and this performance change will constitute an important index of impairment, whether it be primarily physical or “ in the mind”. This technique is not restricted to impairment in keyboard behaviour, but may be adapted for the detection of fatigue in industrial machine operators as well as drivers of motor vehicles.
There are obvious ethical problems in the practical implementation of the performance monitoring program. It will be important to ensure that the computer does not record the details of the operator’s type rate so that the employee is disadvantaged. One of the challenging problems to be faced in the application of this research effort will be cooperation with employers and unions on the most efficient use of monitoring software so that productivity can be enhanced without compromising the operator’s working conditions."

At the St. Jerome parish picnic in Fancy Farm, KY, Olivia Webb, from Brownsburg, IN, is all smiles as she picks out her second prize of the day, a lamp she really wanted. Her mother said she knew it would be a good day, because "we found a lucky penny this morning."

The Catholic Conference invited friends of immigrants to come and demonstrate support for comprehensive immigration reform. This is one of the most important policy issues before our Congress in 2013. So here, at the 133rd St. Jerome picnic in Fancy Farm, are some friends of immigrants who want lawmakers pass legislation which includes an earned path to citizenship. Not all who came are pictured here. The Conference wants to thank all who came: Sr. Juana, Donna, Dick, Luis, Ana, Christian, Leonel, Rosa, Chris, Isaac, Elided, David, Sofia, Eligio, Sr. Fran, Sr. Pam, Patti, Gabriel, Jason, Michael, Pat, Dolores, Mary Margaret and Kate.
