Fairly common in humid tropical lowlands. Favors forest edges, plantations, and dense second growth. Usually seen singly or in pairs, foraging quietly in flowering or fruiting trees. Buff throat patch is bordered by black moustache stripes. Birds from western Panama north also show black chest band around buff throat. Note less contrast between head and back than larger Black-headed Saltator, and longer white eyebrow of Green-winged Saltator.

Fairly common in oak and pine-evergreen forests in foothills and highlands; a few descend in winter to lowlands of west Mexico. Forages mainly at middle to upper levels where often quiet and overlooked easily. Note the bold white wingbars, big white tertial and tail spots, and dark streaks on back. Male flame-orange in west Mexico and deeper orange-red in east Mexico and Central America.

Uncommon but unmistakable. Very large spectacular owl of humid evergreen forest in tropical lowlands and foothills. Often roosts at low to middle levels, usually well hidden in shady spots, and flushes easily. At night, favours open forest canopy and forest edge, but calling birds can be well hidden in foliage.
