The "I'm Afraid of Americans" video comes to life! I've known Matt for a long time so maybe he recalled that I've been a huge nine inch nails fan for a long time, and that in fact it was Trent Reznor's enthusiasm for David Bowie that got me to buy my first Bowie record, Earthling, back in college. Or maybe he's just awesome.

Trent Reznor collaborated with Bowie once again when he appeared in the music video for “I’m Afraid of Americans”. Bowie played a tourist or immigrant who is preyed upon by Reznor, the psychotic Johnny the American. Reznor claimed that this was during a low point in his life, and while he was happy to have had the opportunity, he has said that he finds it hard to look back on now.

I wish we had other white newspaper tiles in stock, but the only one we had was the Simpsons “Bee Man Caught in Sting”, so the more neutral tan one was used instead. Unfortunately, the rather granular pattern on the suit had to be ignored. The turtleneck is kind’ve neat, though.

Looking at this makes me want to cry a little. In a few weeks this will never be seen again.
First one to go up from Chicago. I have a lot more, plus pictures from the soundcheck, still to be processed. Have had no time since returning late Monday night. This was a special concert on the tour--it was just Street Sweeper Social Club and NIN--no Jane's Addiction, probably because they are playing Lollapalooza in August and don't want to take away from that gig.
I had GA pit tickets for this but because I went to the soundcheck I missed out on entering with the rest of the people and so couldn't get near the rail, so all these Chicago pictures were taken from the back or side of a very large standing area--probably the largest non-arena pit I've ever been to.

Taken at Rod Laver Arena on the 2005 "With Teeth" tour. I was going to be overseas when NIN played in Sydney but luckily they were playing in Melbourne the day before I left so that's how I got this shot. Yes I am a fan!

Trent laid down the distorted thunder as he closed the song, accompanied by a final barrage of frenzied flashes and synth buzzes. While I didn't get any great pictures of it, he nearly tipped the stand over, stretching and contorting to the rhythm of the beats he was blasting.
This was also the last we saw of the red shirt before he moved behind and began a few renditions off his Ghosts I-IV album where he stepped out of the spotlight and let the music and the visuals carry the performance, also giving the rest of his band a bit more time to shine. Justin Meldal-Johnsen in particular caught my eye as he slapped his upright bass silly.

...while Trent laughs, probably remembering all the other times he's either thrown a bra, or worse, at Robin, who always somehow manages to keep playing while these horrible things are being done to him in front of tens of thousands of people.

Needless to say, I really like those wonderful screens. Few stage rigs have proven so involving at a live gig and it would be a shame to not involve them in the composition of the photos whenever possible. I'm glad I wasn't in the photo pit, where the pros could only stay for three or four songs; they missed out big time.
Trent's rigid mic stand contrasts nicely with his contorted, organic posture. Add the coolness of the light and the pixel-ish, nearly bokeh-like screen texture and you get something I find awesome.
Trent Reznor
Trent Reznor-led industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails brought their unique blend of music and light to East London’s O2 Arena in support of their eighth studio album Hesitation Marks.
The band tore through a 21-song career-spanning set featuring tracks from Hesitation Marks along with hits Me, I’m Not, Piggy, Sanctified and Head Like a Hole.
The constantly changing lighting and stage-length screen had the effect of narrowing and growing the screen during transitions between purely electronic music and full band tracks quite effectively while providing some of the most unique concert lighting of any concert tour I’ve experienced.
A dazzling spectacle of music and light from the seasoned industrial rockers brought a new sense of purpose to the relatively soulless O2 Arena space this fine May evening.
