Reykjavik, Iceland

Photo shot in Reykjavik streets. This is probably not the best wall-art I've seen in the city (there are many good graffiti artists there) but the message is pretty clear ;)

Reykjavik, Iceland

A rhapsody in blue or, perhaps, wrap the tree in blue. Apologies Mr. Gershwin.

If you visit Iceland in winter, you will find that Christmas is celebrated in full. The decorations and lights shown on darker days around the northern winter solstice are very uplifting.

Ef þú heimsækir Ísland á veturna muntu komast að því að jólin eru haldin að fullu. Skreytingarnar og ljósin sem sýnd eru á dekkri dögum í kringum vetrarsólstöður norðanlands eru mjög upplífgandi.

The first permanent settlement in Iceland by Norsemen is believed to have been established in Reykjavík by Ingólfur Arnarson from Norway around AD 870; this is described in Landnámabók, or the Book of Settlement. Ingólfur Arnarson is said to have decided the location of his settlement using a traditional Viking method; he cast his high seat pillars (Öndvegissúlur) into the ocean when he saw the coastline, then settled where the pillars came to shore.

Höfði House, Bogartún, Reykjavik. Scanned from a transparency taken in July 1987.

Höfði House is one of the most attractive and historically significant buildings in Reykjavík. Built in 1909, it initially housed the French Consul, and in the 1940s and 1950s was the home of the British Embassy. It was purchased by the city of Reykjavík in 1958 and restored, and is now used for formal receptions and meetings. In October 1986 it became famous across the world as the venue for the historic summit between US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, which led to the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty and marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War.

Árbæjarsafn (Reykjavík's city museum) is a collection of houses built in 18th century and the first decades of the twentieth century.

I was there yesterday in a lovely weather. This is surely one of the nicest places in the town.

Reykjavik sous la pluie. Premier jour de notre voyage.

Taken while exploring Reykjavik, the capitol of Iceland. It was such an amazing city. I got to spend one more day in the city after my tour ended. I flew off to London the next day. Reykjavik has since become one of my favorite cities in the world. Hopefully I can go back one day.

Hallgrimskirkja

Reykjavík is the capital and largest city of Iceland. It has a latitude of 64°08' N, making it the world's northernmost capital of a souvereign state, and is a popular tourist destination. It is located in southwestern Iceland, on the southern shore of Faxa Bay. With a population of around 120,000 (and over 200,000 in the Capital Region), it is the heart of Iceland's cultural, economic and governmental activity.

Reykjavík is believed to be the location of the first permanent settlement in Iceland, which, according to Ingólfur Arnarson, was established in AD 874. Until the 19th century, there was no urban development in the city location. The city was founded in 1786 as an official trading town and grew steadily over the next decades, as it transformed into a regional and later national centre of commerce, population, and governmental activities. It is among the cleanest, greenest, and safest cities in the world.
