An old, broken down shack on Montana's prairie outside of the small town of Winifred.

UPDATE (10/12/2014): I drove by this same shack last week and saw a man standing next to it. I wondered what he was doing. When I returned from my trip down that rural Montana road this shack and fallen down. I was a little sad.

An anonymous & equally ubiquitous motel sign looms over the horizon in Havre, MT.

I make no apologies. I like signs. I like to photograph signs. The older the sign, the crustier the sign, the more interesting the sign...the better. Northern Montana has an abundance of old sings. I will finally be able to work on my "Letters of the Alphabet" set of photographs.

On one of my hikes through the Black Forest I saw this Oldtimer travelling on a country road. It came just around the curve and I hadn't the best position to take a quick photo but I like it anyway or maybe because of that.

The side of a service station and small grocery store in the small town of Circle, Montana. Located in the middle of nowhere and in need of fuel, this gas station was a welcome sight.

I took a brief journey to Montana last week, which means I spent more time in my automobile than I spent in Montana. The trip gave me a chance to get a feel for the area and what I might expect living there in the days and weeks ahead.

There were photo opportunities all around, but because I was on a tight schedule I didn’t stop often. I instead made a mental note and hoped each of those scenes would be just as pristine and remarkable when I return.

When the author John Steinbeck drove across the country and detailed his travels in the book “Travels with Charley” he wrote, “I am in love with Montana. For other states I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection, but with Montana it is love.” I have not yet made it to the most beautiful corners of Montana just yet, but I already understand what Steinbeck saw in the “Treasure State.”

Montana has such a vast and wide open landscape; one of the reason they also call it “Big Sky Country.” As I drove across Montana along the Missouri River I wondered aloud what Meriwether Lewis and William Clark must have thought when they first explored the same corridor. Only 200 years removed from their overland expedition to the Pacific Ocean, much of the land remains and looks exactly the same and is largely untouched by the steamroller of man. There aren’t many places in the United States where that is still true. And where man has made his indelible and unfortunate mark, the places are older and more antiquated than what I’m used to seeing. It was like a time warp for me.

I truly look forward to photographing this beautiful state.

A row of grain bins silhouetted against the morning sun outside of Geraldine, Montana.

I'm not sure if it is the hand of God that guides me on certain days...or just dumb luck, but I do sense there are other forces at work when I am out on one of my 'search and destroy' missions to photograph the beautiful state of Montana.

On this particular morning I was headed to Lost Lake...and I got lost.

One of the big reasons I got lost is because I couldn't find Shonkin. I kept driving and driving...and still no Shonkin. As the sun came up I was growing increasingly impatient. At some point I decided I needed to abandon my primary mission and begin photographing targets of opportunity along the way. So, as I drove near the Highwood Mountains north and east of Great Falls, I literally began chasing the morning light.

I'm not sure how far my truck and I ambled across Montana's empty gravel roads, but at some point I came over a hill and stumbled onto a small town. Shonkin!

I was happy knowing I was closer to finding Lost Lake despite the fact I was horribly late. I weaved my way through the small town looking for something interesting to photograph when I came upon this row of grain bins. I particularly enjoyed their silhouette and the field of fog behind them. I leapt (sic) from my truck, lifted my camera into a firing position, and that's when I noticed a strange circular halo around the scene I wanted to photograph. In all my years of shooting photography I never once encountered a phenomenon such as this.

At first I thought I was seeing a sundog. I lowered my camera to take a better look with both eyes, but then kicked myself in the ass for thinking that in the first place. Sundogs are formed by ice crystals in high and cold cirrus clouds and in the midst or very cold weather. On this mild morning I had neither. Then I wondered if the fog was playing games with the light and my lens. I didn't know, or much care, so I figured I should probably shoot before my halo went away.

Yes, I was disappointed I didn't make it to Lost Lake before the sun came up. But I wonder if the Lord had other plans for me on this morning. Maybe he had something he wanted me to see.

Oh, that small town I stumbled onto was not Shonkin. Shonkin, it seems, isn't even a one horse town...it's a no horse town, which includes nothing more than an aging train depot and a grain elevator. That's it.

No wonder I couldn't find it.

I was in Geraldine.

25 miles away.
