WOW 443 to Reykjavik departing off the Polderbaan at Amsterdam with brake dust being blown off the main gear brakes as they are applied to stop the tyres rotating before being retracted.
(272/365) My camera has died :( The lens won't retract & I get a lens error message when I switch it on. Looking online for a cure it seems the lens mechanism is binding, possibly due to dirt or grass inside (I was down the the long grass photographing caterpillars on Monday).
It's quite ironic really because when it seized up I was trying to take a photo of a single Magpie for the 115 pictures in 2015 group theme "superstition" ie 1 for sorrow, 2 for joy. Well it sure is sorrowful having a broken camera! It's heading off to a repair shop in Cork tomorrow to see if it's economical enough to repair it.
Found plenty of these Bloody Nosed Beetles yesterday morning over at Priddy Mineries, you are able to spot them from some distance as they like to climb the reed stems, amongst them were also several mating pairs, so it was just a question of which was the most accessible with the camera without disturbing and causing them to perform that great beetle trick of retracting the undercarriage and dropping into the undergrowth. (which is why I don't have many shots of Weevils!)

Wearing her Paris Salon Number '196', Aerospatiale/BAC Concorde prototype 003 G-AXDN shows off her Ogee wing planform to great effect whilst appearing at the 1974 Farnborough SBAC Airshow
Here with her nose retracted into 'Supersonic' mode in a wonderful topside pass, she was the 3rd Concorde prototype - and our 2nd to take to the air with Brian Trubshaw at the controls.
With black test marks added on her port leading edge and the standard photographic calibration checkerboard marks displayed under her name, she held the accolade for the fastest recorded speed of any Concorde, reaching 1,480 mph (Mach 2.23) at a then record height of 63,700 feet while operating out of Tangier, Morocco
Preserved for posterity, she can be viewed and walked through at the Imperial War Museum's collection at Duxford in Cambridgeshire

As here, those 'brick-like' Zeniths always suffered with an imbalance of light as the blind moved across the frame!

After an active feeding session yesterday, the LG retreated to a spot under a bridge for a rest.
Often described as rotund, this is particularly evident when they fluff out their feathers and retract their necks.
They become un-birdlike and more akin to a floating, feathered rugby ball I always think.
Marsh Tit / poecile palustris. Calke Park, Derbyshire. 05/12/16.
Monday dawned pleasantly crisp, frosty and sunny. This prompted me to go back to Calke Park and continue my quest to photograph Marsh Tits which are resident there.
The five hour session started slowly with only a few visits from MT's - these were frustratingly fast and brief however. Fortunately, other species came, lingered longer and helped pass the time.
(Sitting near ground level in very cold conditions, trying not to move too much is testing and should carry a health warning. Therefore all distractions from my growing discomfort were welcome!)
Four hours in and I had achieved some more reasonable images of GSWs, and Nuthatch but little else and certainly not the much desired shots of Marsh Tits I had in mind.
The urge to head home grew too much and I'd detached my lens hood and retracted the zoom in readiness to pack up.
Suddenly, as if by magic, this Marsh Tit appeared on the scene and took a keen interest in some sunflower hearts I had put down.
Bingo! We were both happy :-)

OK so now you can see the snail has moved slighlty and retracted into the shell. Also it's pulled in one eye which did extend back out while I shot this stack, but none were in focus except this view which works to show how mobile those eye stalks are. A 9-image stack - DMap, Zerene. IRL it's about 1 inch long here.
...Better than not having a leg to stand on. The function of standing on one leg is thermoregulatory or relaxation of muscle fatigue in the retracted leg. Here is a link that will tell you more about this bird behavior. www.reinhold-necker.de/seite11a.html
A bit distant for a 70mm lens Boeing 757 of DHL over one of the cooling towers at Ratcliffe on Soar. I thought it was unusual that the undercarriage had not retracted after take off from East Midlands Airport. But after a couple of passes realised it was doing touch and goes.No doubt Pilot training.
Bottom view showing the gear retracted. Designing the landing gear to hold the weight of the ship was a serious challenge. It works but if you bump it the gear will collapse.

first monarch of the season. Catching them with wings spread is a singular talent. The photographer must wait until they start to spread and shoot a split second before the wings are extended, as they retract the wings almost immediately. Notice the slight blur in the wing tips as they are still moving.
strange moth behaviour....notice the hairy appendage coming out from the abdomen....after this shot was taken, the moth retracted the appendage into its body and flew off.
Explanations,id, welcomed from any moth expert.

Skaftafell Blue Ice Glacier Walk, Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland
Every winter, glacial rivers retract and the water freezes, leaving behind stunning natural ice caves in different locations in Iceland. No two ice caves are ever alike.
This means stepping foot inside one is truly a one-of-a-kind experience.
The most popular place for ice cave tours is on the south coast of Iceland. Visit Skaftafell, part of the vast Vatnajökull National Park. The latter is named after Europe's largest ice cap, the Vatnajökull glacier.

Whaddup, apparently I'm not dead! See below if you're curious why I was gone. This vehicle features a handmade canvas roof (retracted). I've also used this technique in a much more elaborate fashion for a non-retracted canvas roof in another car, which I'll post at a later date.

So, long story short about why I've been absent from Lego cars for 3 years - I never stopped building them, I just stopped photographing and posting them. This is for a couple reasons.
One was that I got a job that sucked the life out of me for about a year and a half (I'm at a much less stressful one now, thanks), another was that the photographing became a hindrance to my enjoyment of the hobby. With this new photography setup and style I'm aiming to focus just on the car itself, without any fancy effects or camerawork. They became a burden instead of a boon.
Lastly, I went through a long period of creative doubt, and felt the work I was producing wasn't of the quality I wanted. I worked through that, and I'm now meeting my own expectations for quality, but it just took a while of solitary practice.

The California Nebula (NGC 1499/Sh2-220) is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. Its name comes from its resemblance to the outline of the US State of California in long exposure photographs. It lies an estimated 1000 light years from earth. The colors come from the different gasses found in the nebula. Hydrogen alpha (golden),Sulfur (red´ish) and Oxygen (blue)
......
It is a large bird, standing up to 100 cm (39 in) tall and measuring 84–102 cm (33–40 in) long with a 155–195 cm (61–77 in) wingspan. The body weight can range from 1.02–2.08 kg (2.2–4.6 lb). Its plumage is largely grey above, and off-white below. Adults have a white head with a broad black supercilium and slender crest, while immatures have a dull grey head. It has a powerful, pinkish-yellow bill, which is brighter in breeding adults. It has a slow flight, with its long neck retracted (S-shaped). This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes and spoonbills, which extend their necks. The call is a loud croaking "fraaank". The Australian white-faced heron is often incorrectly called a grey heron. In Ireland the grey heron is often colloquially called a "crane".
