I heard knocking on the door that closed out

It persisted

I opened the door.

The vaccum sucked in my entity.

I resisted. I gave in. I fell for him again, on a not so starry night.

Retouching for Overstock.com

If retouch is done the right way, faces look more natural after it. It's just how our cognition works - our mind puts together and 'retouches' everything we see, sorts everything by various properties and "plays back" the result to us, which is very distinct from what the camera "sees". Physically, our vision can sense even less than one megapixel - and this is real fact, you check it. Our eyes work it around by switching the focus extremely fast from one point to another in fractions of a second, building up the whole picture in that way.

thought i'd share a before-and-after with a relatively subtle retouch effect for portraiture (as opposed to glamour or fashion). starting with a stunning model and a talented MUA, the "raw materials" here were pretty dang good. so i was going for an understated overall effect - one that even the subject of the image would probably never even notice. note that subtle does NOT mean less work. here's more-or-less what i did (about 1 1/2 hour total).

- first, i removed blemishes with a variety of tools (patch, heal & clone stamp). removed the crease under her nose, cleaned up stray hairs, softened smile folds, neck fold marks, nose shadow and misc. wrinkles. [Note: at this point, i will usually do some facial recontouring, but couldn't find anything on demery i felt needed improving]

- the skin smoothing layer is a new technique i wanted to try - i used a red channel layer mask to protect texture and then painted light brush strokes sampling colors from the portion of the face on which i was painting. it's similar effect to the median layer i've used with frequency seperation techniques but more selective. the makeup was a little blotchy and this did a nice job of evening it out.

- subtle teeth whitening

- eye pop

- added hair at bottom left for volume

- the light on her hand distracted from her face IMO so i painted in shadow

- dodge and burn to enhance contour
