Factory building, Roche Bau 27, 1936/37, Otto Rudolf Salvisberg; from 1951 extension by Roland Rohn
The building is considered an important testimony to Swiss industrial architecture in the formal language of New Building. The building, which was extended by Roland Rohn (1905-1971), is an ideal embodiment of the architectural corporate identity created for Roche and taken up again by Herzog & de Meuron. In 1953 Roland Rohn extended this building to the south in keeping with Salvisberg's architectural language and created the end of the Roche site to form Solitudepark.
The Roche Tower (Building 1), also known as Roche Tower, is a high-rise building in the Swiss city of Basel. The building is the headquarters of the pharmaceutical group Hoffmann-La Roche, which is also the owner and developer of the building. At 178 metres, the Roche Tower clearly surpasses the 126-metre-high Prime Tower in Zurich, which was previously the highest high-rise building in Switzerland. However, the country's tallest free-standing building is still the St. Chrischona television tower, 250 metres high and only a few kilometres from Basel. The high-rise building serves purely operational purposes and is not accessible to the public. The Roche Tower, designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron, was built as part of an extensive structural restructuring of the Basel headquarters, which from 2021 will also include Building 2, which is currently under construction at 205 metres.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Rijnvhaven, Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminapier (slightly cut)
The Rijnhaven, as if the redevelopment didn’t take place. High tide and the swollen river Maas flooded the old harbour basin again. And I can be naïve; I accessed the platform level of the metro station Rijnhaven, expecting the old harbour to be emptied and with a fine dusting of snow. And home again, expecting Photoshop's new generative filling tool (AI-based) to fully de-obstruct the New Luxor (obstructed as it was by a lighting fixture of Rijnhaven metro station). Oh well ;-)
In the BG is the Wilhelmina Pier, once the home of the HAL transatlantic shipping company, the Hanno container terminal and various storage facilities (vemen), now accommodates some of Rotterdam’s most iconic highrises, from l to r: Montevideo (Mecanoo/Francine Houben), World Port Center(Norman Foster, New Orleans( Alvaro Siza) and Boston (Van Dongen-Koschuchts), De Rotterdam (OMA/Koolhaas), KPN building (Renzo Piano), and the Erasmus Bridge (Ben van Berkel). The Regional Court building (Kraaijvanger Architects) and InHolland (Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects) are on the right.
The cause of this radical restructuring was, of course, the global change in maritime transport modes and the Kop van Zuid urban revitalization plan that eventually made the best of it and converted the Pier and the rest of the Kop van Zuid into an integrated living, recreative and commercial service quarter. It’s comparable with the Docklands in London and the waterfront re-developments in Barcelona and New York.

Europe, Spain, Andalusia, Sevilla, Plaza da la Encarnación, Metropol Parasol, Maintenance workers (uncut)
The Metropol Parasol, aka Setas de Sevilla was designed by Berlin architect Jörgen Mayer and opened in 2011. It's on the location of a demolished market and In its bowels are a new food market and a museal space where the ancient (Roman) foundations of the city can be visited. The main function of the edifice is to refresh and modernize the urban image of Sevilla.
At the planning stage, there was opposition - the Semana Sancta organizers were against it and, strange enough, a Spanish-German trade organization too. Perhaps it was a bit too much of a "fremdkörper" in the middle of town. But in the 6 years of its existence, it has become an organic element of the town.
The view it offers on the town and its surroundings is wonderful. It's, by the way, the largest wooden structure in the world. The laminated wood is covered by a fire retardant layer.
Seen here are maintenance works.

Europe, Portugal, Lisboa, Parque das Naçoes, Estação do Oriente (slightly cut from all sides)
Estação do Oriente was created by Santiago Calatrava in 1997 for the 1998 World Expo. Together with the other new buildings and facilities, it transformed a largely abandoned petrochemical industry complex (from Galp) into the Parque das Naçoes.
The audacious architecture of the station is both biomorphic - the bowels of the station - Calatrava was inspired by the skeleton of a whale here, and neo-neo gothic - the design cues for the train shed came from a design study Gaudí-made for his magnus opus, the Segrada Familia. The curving metal and glass canopy that’s shown here prominently, adds another design accent - it effortlessly connects with the adjacent neo-modernist Vasco da Gama shopping mall.
The multi-modal station has 4 levels: On the top level are the train platforms, the middle levels are for the station facilities and connect to the bus and taxi station on the left and the Parque das Nações on the right and on the bottom level gives access to the green line subway station.
This number 115 of the Urban restructuring (World) album. And, of course, 29 of Parque das Naçoes

Derby Central Library was the main public and reference library in Derby, England, between 1879 and 2018. It was established in 1879 along with Derby Museum and Art Gallery, with which it shared a red brick building designed in the Domestic Flemish Gothic style by Richard Knill Freeman and given to Derby by Michael Thomas Bass. After 139 years, the Central Library was closed on 9 June 2018 as part of Derby City Council's restructuring of their library services. The building is now occupied by Derby Museum and Art Gallery.

This is a sublime little spot that I often head to for sunset, being 15 minutes from home. Hard to believe that this was actually hit by a ship a few years ago, which meant a complete restructure of the Lighthouse!

The facades and roof are wood (afrormosia) covered. The roof is protected from the weather by glass tiles. On the inside is oak. Natural light is brought in by some 1400 small rectangular windows.
After a competition, the design of the building was awarded to Robbrecht and Daem architecten & Marie-José Van Hee. It was integrated into the large-scale urban redevelopment scheme ‘Master Plan Torenrij Gent’ (2007), focused on the restructuring of the Korenmarkt, Emile Braunplein and the Belfortstraat area. Of course there was some controversy.

Palazzo Barzizza is a restructured formerly Gothic-style palace located on the Canal Grande of Venice, adjacent to the Palazzo Giustinian Businello in the Sestiere of San Polo, Venice, Italy. The opposite palace is Palazzo Cavalli.
The palace was erected in typical fondaco style, with warehouses in the base and residence atop, by the Contarini family in the 13th-century. It has undergone a number of refurbishments over the centuries. The Barzizza acquired the palace in the 18th-century.
The 16th-century ground-floor portal is partly hidden by a protrusion into the canal.

The Rochdale Canal, in Luddendenfoot a town located close to Hebden Bridge, Calderdale, West Yorkshire.
It is a broad canal because its locks are wide enough to allow vessels of 14 feet width. The canal runs for 32 miles across the Pennines from the Bridgewater Canal at Castlefield Basin in Manchester to join the Calder and Hebble Navigation at Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire.
The Canal was conceived in 1776, when a group of 48 men from Rochdale raised £237 and commissioned James Brindley to conduct a survey of possible routes between Sowerby Bridge and Manchester.
The promoters, unsure as to whether to build a wide or a narrow canal, postponed the decision until an Act of Parliament had been obtained. The first two attempts to obtain an act failed after being opposed by mill owners, concerned about water supply. The promoters, to understand the mill owners' position, asked William Jessop to survey the parts of the proposed canal that were causing most concern. Jessop gave evidence to the Parliamentary committee, and in 1794 an act was obtained which created the Rochdale Canal Company and its construction.
When an Act of Parliament was sought in 1965, to authorise the abandonment of the canal, the Inland Waterways Association petitioned against it, and when it was finally passed, it contained a clause that ensured the owners would maintain it until the adjacent Ashton Canal was abandoned. Discussion of the relative merits of restoring the canal or the Huddersfield Narrow Canal in 1973 led the formation of societies to promote both schemes in 1974.
The Rochdale Canal Society wanted to see the canal fully re-opened, as part of a proposed Pennine Park. They worked hard both to protect the line of the canal and to begin the process of refurbishing it. A new organisational structure was created in 1984, with the formation of the Rochdale Canal Trust.
In 1997, the Rochdale Canal Trust was restructured, in response to announcements that there might be large grants available as part of the millennium celebrations. The canal was still at this point owned by a private company, and the Millennium Commission would not make grants to a scheme which was for private profit, rather than public benefit. The restructuring would allow the Trust to take over responsibility for the canal. However, the plan was rejected by the Commission, and to access the grant of £11.3 million, the Waterways Trust took over ownership of the canal.

In the 1950s Europe's economy flourished, bringing about a complete restructuring of the roads, greatly improving the quality. This created the 'need' for faster, better handling cars known as Grand Tourers. Maserati recognized the potential and for the first time in their company's thirty year existence, they set about developing a real road car; the 3500 GT. In the past the Italian racing car specialist had produced small runs of road cars, but they were nothing more than thinly disguised racers. The new machine would have to combine the finesse and poise of the marque's racing cars with the luxury and quality demanded by the high-end market.
Maserati did not have look far for the 3500 GT's running gear. The six cylinder engine was directly derived from that of the 350 S sportsracer, which was based the engines in highly successful 250 F single seater and 300 S sports racer. Tamed down for street use and reliability, the twin-spark engine produced a healthy 220 bhp. Thanks to its 'oversquare' bore/stroke ratio, the 3.5 litre engine also produced an abundance of low-end torque. Mated to a four-speed gearbox, the 'six' was mounted in a tubular chassis. In good Italian fashion, stopping power was provided by drum brakes all-round.
Unlike the previous road going Maseratis, the 3500 GT was going to be offered as a complete model, so Maserati's engineers had the control over every bit of the car for the first time. For the interior and other trim Maserati's chief designer Ing. Giulio Alfieri spent a lot of time looking at British manufacturers and suppliers. The end-result was a very well appointed interior that offered room for two adults up front and two children at the back. Alfieri commissioned various Italian coachbuilders to draw up designs for the 3500 GT, from which Maserati would pick the final version. At the 1957 Geneva launch an Allemano and Touring Coupe were shown. Touring's design was eventually chosen and production got underway later in the year and the first cars delivered early in 1958.
Maserati's gamble paid off as the 3500 GT proved to a big commercial success. That was really what the doctor ordered after the hugely expensive 1957 racing, which saw many of the Maserati Works cars destroyed. At the end of the season, the company withdrew from active racing to fully focus on passenger cars. Alfieri continued working on perfecting the 3500 GT by adding front disc brakes and Fuel Injection. A bigger development was the introduction of a convertible model on a shortened 3500 GT chassis. Again various coachbuilders had a go at penning a candidate, and this time the commission was granted to Vignale. The final design was pretty similar to the Touring coupe, which made the 'Spyder' easily recognizable as a 3500 GT. Series production began in 1960.
By 1963 the Maserati 3500 GT was showing its age, although technically it was still up to par with the best Ferrari or Aston Martin had to offer. Alfieri decided to replace the successful Grand Tourer with not one, but two models. Both were technically very similar to the 3500 GT and sported slightly larger versions of the six cylinder engine. The first of the two to be announced was the Sebring, which sported a 2+2 Coupe body penned by Vignale. The second was a strict two seater; the Mistral. This very elegant Coupe was designed by Pietro Frua. Later a Mistral Spyder was also added to the line-up. For a small racing car manufacturer it must have been a massive step to start series production, but Maserati succeeded with surprising ease. Eventually well over 2200 examples were produced; more than all previous Maseratis combined.
An old concept revisited, I've been looking through old stuff for portfolio and I wanted to give this photo one more try. I restructured the background and pulled together some of the tones and edited the cloth better, and threw some signature blue in there to make it more consistent with my style.
I'm curious, do you guys like the new background better than the old one?

FVG - Rive d'Arcano, Tricano castle. Unfortunately closed, we could not enter to photograph some glimpses, only this shot through the gate.
The current thirteenth-century castle was built on the structures of a previous fortified construction perhaps prior to the tenth century. During the Middle Ages it was called di Tricano because of the three black dogs present on the noble coat of arms of the feudal lords. These had obtained from the patriarch the important hereditary office of marshals and confaloniers of the Aquileian Church and this position involved them in almost all feudal struggles from the fourteenth to the fifteenth century. In 1420 it passed under the dominion of the Republic of Venice and in 1511 after the events of the peasant revolt of "Fat Thursday" the central part was restructured. The castle is linked to the mysterious story of Francesco d'Arcano who in 1635 married Todeschina di Prampero and stabbed her out of jealousy. Todeschina before dying wrote her initials TP of her in her blood on a wall of the castle, these were still visible until 1976. Francesco had the corpse walled up and it was found at the beginning of the twentieth century during restoration works. The structures of the castle are well preserved with the remarkable double walls, the moat, the gate tower where once there was the wooden drawbridge. Inside there is the residential domus, with 13th century mullioned windows and the annexed rustic buildings.

Now I know Matford is not exactly a household name in the automobile industry, and to be honest, I had not heard of it before either! So, don't feel bad, you are not alone. When I first came upon it at the show, this only one made along with another Matford model sitting near it, I thought, hmm, this looks like a Ford from the late thirties or early forties, but not quite. It/they had some similarities, but also were a bit different, and it was until I did the research once home that I knew what I was dealing with, and here, below, is what I found.
The Matford Company was the result of a joint venture between the US-based Ford Motor Company and the French-based Mathis S.A. Created in 1934, Matford sales progressed from 1,049 in 1935 to 8,898 in 1938 before falling to less than half that number as the company focused on producing trucks for the French Army and slow the German advance.
Ford's ambitions went beyond the North American continent, and had assembled Model Ts in France through 1927, the Model As from 1927 to 1931, and the Model Ys from 1932 to 1934. As Ford continued to expand in the European market, Mathis S.A. was encountering financial difficulties. Since Mathis had an underutilized factory at Strasbourg (officially in France following frontier changes formalized in 1919), Ford saw an opportunity to increase production rather than pursue expansion at their existing workshop in Asnières-sur-Seine. An official joint venture was formalized between these two entities on October 1st, 1934, dubbed SA Francaise Matford. Ford owned 60% and Mathis the remaining 40%. The early production were versions of American and British Ford models assembled at the Strasbourg factory.
Committed to the success of Matford, Ford provided substantial amounts of capital to modernize the Strasbourg factory.
Matford was formed between the bookends of The Great Depression and World War II, and its longevity would ultimately be suffocated due to the German occupation and its proximity to the German border. Hindsight, as they say, is 20/20
The automobiles that were initially built by the newly formed Matford Company were similar to the V8-powered Ford Model 48s built in the United States. A year later, in 1936, the Matford Alsace model appeared and was offered with either a 2,225cc or 3,621cc V8 engine. The 1937 models were generally known by their fiscal horsepower ratings, the 13CV and the 21CV.
With World War II on the horizon, civilian automobile production ended in 1940, and manufacturing focused on truck production for the French army. Since the Matford Strasbourg factory was close to the German border, the contents were moved to Ford's Cologne plant. A new Ford plant opened at Poissy near Paris in 1940, and following a restructuring (including the end of its association with Mathis), the Ford Société Anonyme Française was formed.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam-Zuid, Kop van Zuid, In Holland (Eric van Egeraad) facade Cité (Tangram). (cut from all sides)
In the northern facade of the InHolland University for higher professional education (by Erik van Egeraat associated architects.,1997), the Cité student/starters tenement building (by Tangram architects, 2010) and a small part of the Internal revenue service building can be discerned The internal structure of the In Holland building can be seen here too.
All the buildings are of course elements of the 'Kop van Zuid' urban restructuring project in progress which has converted major parts of the old harbour area on the South bank of the Maas (with its defunct ports, warehouses and railway heads) into an integrated living, recreative and commercial service quarter. It’s comparable with the Docklands in London and the waterfront re-developments in Barcelona and New York.

The Augustusburg and Falkenlust Palaces form a historical building complex in Brühl, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The buildings are connected by the spacious gardens and trees of the Schlosspark. Built in the early 18th century, the palaces and adjoining gardens are considered masterpieces of early rococo architecture and have been listed as a UNESCO cultural World Heritage Site since 1984.[1] Augustusburg Palace (German: Schloss Augustusburg) and its parks also serve as a venue for the Brühl Palace Concerts.
History
The Augustusburg Castle was built on the foundations of a medieval castle in 1725. It was planned and funded by Archbishop-Elector of Cologne, Clemens August of Bavaria of the Wittelsbach family, and designed by the architects Johann Conrad Schlaun and François de Cuvilliés.Shortly thereafter, François de Cuvilliés designed the Falkenlust hunting lodge to the southeast for Clemens August to practice falconry, and the lodge was built from 1729 to 1740.
The elaborate gardens surrounding the Augustusburg palace were designed by Dominique Girard. An elaborate parterre for an area south of the palaces was also designed, but it was restructured by Peter Joseph Lenné in the 19th century and turned into a landscape garden. Attempts to renovate the area have proven difficult, due to poor source material availability.
From shortly after World War II until 1994, Augustusburg was used as a reception hall for guests of state by the German President, as it is not far from Bonn, which was the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany at that time.

With the restructuring of the Mainline Subdivision locals, the 412 has bumped B902 from the position of top job on the division, as it's a dedicated bullet that Louisville fires at Magna every weekday.
Finding ways to positively change undesirable emotional and behavioral patterns starts with assessing the trunks and limbs for troublesome tangles that have overgrown their desirability, then pruning and restructuring pathways to alternative ways of seeing and being. Photography and art, and most recently photographic art, allow me to move through this process with a sense of wonder and delight. Thanks for joining me on the journey.
Seibu Department Store and its annex Parco shopping centre are claimed to be the longest building in Japan. It measures about 350 m long and integrated with the Ikebukuro station of the Seibu railway and the JR East.
Ikebukuro used to have the highest building as well as the longest in Japan.
Seibu also used to be the largest retail business in Japan in the 1980s but started to decline in the 1990s after the retirement of the charismatic owner president.
The department stores, not just Seibu, had reached a turning point in the 21st century. Seibu Department Store was transferred to Seven & i Holdings Co. Ltd., another retail group in 2009 as part of the industry restructuring. The seven & i surprised the public in 2022 by announcing the sale of Seibu Department Store to the NY-based Fortress Investment Group.
The investment management firm proposed to invite Yodobashi Camera, a retail chain of camera and home appliances, to the department store in Ikebukuro. In response, Louis Vuitton, a major tenant in the Seibu Department Store, announced an objection against the plan quoting the inconsistency of their brand image with Yodobashi Camera. The labour union of the department store also held a strike in this August expressing their objection against the sale and demanding to sustain the employment and salary.
As of this writing, nobody knows the future of this large department store ^_^;)

Louis Vuitton finally announced their departure from the Seibu Department in July 2025.
Our local elementary school has been closed for several years due to school restructuring. The blacktop on the old playground has been slowly breaking apart due to the work of rain, sun and time.
Images stenciled on the asphalt that originally encouraged children to walk, run, slide and jump now seem to tell a different story. This image reminds me that if we DON'T exercise our bodies, we will break apart.

--
The cathedral—dedicated to the Holy Trinity—was established in 1224. After a damaging fire in 1270, a rebuilding programme greatly enlarged the building, but again destroyed by an extensive fire damage in 1390. By the time of the Scottish Reformation in 1560, the cathedral was abandoned.
A mostly intact octagonal chapter house dates from the major enlargement after the fire of 1270. Probably the last important rebuilding feature was the major restructuring of the chapterhouse between 1482 and 1501.
Created in 1869 by Florentine architect Giuseppe Poggi, as part of major restructuring of the city walls in 1869.
Poggi's sumptuous terrace is typically 19th century which he intended as a showcase for the masterpieces (at least copies) of Michelangelo.
Poggi designed a monument base dedicated to Michelangelo, where copies of Michelangelo's works, including the David and the Medici chapel sculptures from San Lorenzo, would be displayed.*

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Wilhelminapier, Rijnhaven, Strandway, De Rotterdam, New Orleans (slightly cut from L&T)
The trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) ‘Strandway’ (Shipkits Groningen and Stocznia, Poland (2014)) has just entered the Rijnhaven for the redevelopment of this old harbour basin. It will be partly (30%) filled-in to enable the realization of amongst others an office/apartment building strip with up to 200m high edifices, called the 'Skyline Posthumalaan' with an adjacent park and city beach. And there will be the floating Rijnhavenpark too here.

The somewhat silly ".7xEF36mm f/1.2" in the camera/lens description, still flags the use of the Viltrox mount adaptor / speed booster.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland Rotterdam, Blaak, Blaak 555
Blaak 555 is one of the Rotterdam landmarks. It has a remarkable history - twists and turns galore. It was designed by Helmut Jahn from Murphy/Jahn with Inbo and 3BN as participating partners It was commissioned by Credit Lyonnais and eventually became one of the seats of Fortis, once a large Dutch/Belgian insurance and banking conglomerate.
During the 2008 credit crunch, it went down, almost taking one of her recent acquisitions, Dutch system bank ABN/AMRO with it. Ii was bailed out and restructured/cut up by the Belgian and Dutch governments. And the building was sold.
The current owner is German investment group ‘ KanAm Grund ‘ which converted it two years ago into a multi-tenant (befrijfsverzamelgebouw) office building. The new name Blaak 555 (the address of the building).
This cathedral is located in the city of Silves, in Portugal's Algarve region. A mosque, built during the Moorish rule of the Iberian Peninsula, was originally located here. It was mostly restructured and converted into a Catholic cathedral after 1242, when Christian knights reconquered the region. Built and renovated over the centuries, the cathedral has some Baroque characteristics, but is mostly Gothic in nature. It is considered to be the main Gothic monument in the Algarve and was classified as a national monument on June 29, 1922. (Wikipedia)

Prato della Valle
is a 90,000 square meter elliptical square in Padova, Italy (Veneto region, northern Italy). It is the largest square in Italy, and one of the largest in Europe. Today, the square is a large space with a green island at the center, l'Isola Memmia, surrounded by a small canal bordered by two rings of statues.
Prior to 1635, the area which would come to be known as the "Prato della valle" was largely a featureless expanse of partially swampy terrain just south of the old city walls of Padova. In 1636 a group of Venetian and Veneto notables financed the construction there of a temporary but lavishly appointed theater as a venue for mock battles on horseback. The musical entertainment which served as prologue to the jousting is considered to be the immediate predecessor of the first public opera performances in Venice which began the following year.
In 1767 the square, which belonged to the monks of Santa Giustina became the public property of the city of Padua. In 1775 Andrea Memmo, whose statue is in the square, decided to reclaim and restructure the entire area. The entire project, which was never fully completed, is represented in a famous copper engraving by Francesco Piranesi from 1785. It seems that Memmo had commissioned this and other representations and kept them on exhibition at the Palazzo Venezia, the headquarters of the Embassy of the Republic in Rome. He did this in order to entice other important figures into financing the construction of statues to decorate the square. The project was approved by Domenico Cerato, professor of architecture at Vicenza and Padova.
The preliminary excavations done to install the plumbing system and reclaim the area were directed by Simone Stratico. These excavations brought to light the remains of an ancient Roman theater. These findings conferred a sense of historical dignity to the initiative, and transformed it into a project of reclamation for its natural public use. Andrea Memmo resided at Palazzo Angeli, constructed in the 15th century and located in Prato della Valle at an angle with the avenue Umberto I. Today, the monumental palazzo, the property of the city of Padova, hosts the Museum of Precinema, Minici Zotti Collection.
Of particular interest are the benedictine Abbey of Santa Giustina, the neoclassical style Loggia Amulea, and the many interesting palazzi constructed between the 14th and the 18th centuries that surround the square.

The State Museum of Applied Arts of Uzbekistan is an art museum located in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, founded in 1937 as a temporary exhibition for handicrafts. The museum contains over 4,000 exhibits on decorative art in Uzbekistan, including wood carving, ceramics, embossing, jewelry, gold weaving, embroidery, and samples of mass production in local industry.
Until the beginning of the 21st century, the museum was located in the former palace of the Russian diplomat Alexander Alexandrovich Polovtsev Jr..
The museum building, known as the Polovtsev house, was purchased by his secretary Mikhail Stepanovich Andreev from Tashkent merchant Nikolai Ivanovich Ivanov. Under Andreev's guidance, the interiors of the house were readjusted and refurbished to fit an Oriental style. The main architect of this restructuring was A. A. Burmeyster. The house was known colloquially as the "Polovtsev House". The building is an example of Oriental architectural and decorative art, built in the late 19th century. The decoration, carving and painting of the building was done by Uzbek folk artists Usta T. Arsankulov, A. Kazymdzhanov (Tashkent), Usta Shirin Muradov (Bukhara), Usta A. Palvanov (Khiva), and Usta Abdullah (Rishtan).
Flybe sadly collapsed one year ago today, on 4th March 2020.
At the time of its collapse, Flybe had some 54 Q400s and 9 ERJ-175 in its fleet. It was undergoing a restructuring and rebranding to Virgin Connect, when Coronavirus hit Europe and Virgin Atlantic, one of its three shareholders, pulled the plug on its funding whilst it too, fort to survive.

Views of Aberdeen, in and around Union Terrace Gardens, which were completely restructured between 2019 and reopening on 22 December 2022.
The original sunken gardens dated from 1879 and were (and are) bounded on the west by Union Terrace, by the Den Burn to the east, although that is now underground and supplanted by a railway and by the Den Burn dual-carriageway.
On the north side is Rosemount Viaduct, noted for the three adjacent buildings known as Education, Salvation and Damnation, the city library, St Marks Church and His Majesty's Theatre, seen from left to right in this photo.
The theatre, prominent in the foreground, was completed in 1906, the glass fronted extension (with three storeys below street level) being opened in 2005. This is one of only two theatres in the world that retained 'His' in their title during the reign of Elizabeth II, the other being in Perth, Australia, with which it was twinned in 2006. That theatre had been completed two years earlier, in 1904.
