The lavishly restored Gorch Fock - what will become of it?

Montana Rail Link westbound freight "LM" (Laurel to Missoula) awaits departure from yard. The time is 6:05 in the evening of a successful day, spent in both directions to and from Helena. My friend who had provided the ride and expertise for the day was a signal maintainer with his headquarters in the well-kept depot built by Northern Pacific. The MRL restored the depot clock to working condition.

I still live, I’m just more active on Instagram mainly because Flickr, to put it bluntly, is dead as shit.

This is the rebuilt original Bluff Fort, restored through the effort of the Hole in the Rock Foundation. The community in southeast Utah, settled in April 1880 by Mormon pioneers.

Pioneers were seeking a route from south-central Utah to their proposed colony in the far southeastern corner of the state. In the autumn of 1879, some 250 men, women, and children left with enough supplies for a 6- to 8-week trip, and undertook one of the most challenging and dramatic pioneering expeditions in American history.

Rejecting two longer routes, they chose a more direct path and expected the 125-mile trek would take 6 weeks. Instead, the journey extended 260 miles over 6 months via the longest shortcut, Hole-in-the-Rock Trail during the winter.

Many sections of the trail were almost impassable. To allow wagon passage, the men spent 6 weeks blasting and chiseling a path through a narrow, 1200-foot (400 m) drop in the sandstone cliffs known as the Hole-in-the-Rock. Brothers had experience using explosives as miners in Wales, were put in charge of drilling and blasting to make a path for wagon passage.

On January 26, 1880 the expedition (250 people, 83 full-sized wagons, and over 1000 head of livestock) began their descent to the river. Wagons were heavily roped, and teams of men and oxen used to lower them through the upper crevice, which has slopes approaching 45°. Further down, a wooden track had been constructed along a slickrock sandstone slope. Posts in drilled holes supported horizontal beams to allow passage of the wagons.

By April 1880, the pioneers were too exhausted to continue to their intended destination 20 miles upriver and chose to settle along flat area in the river valley. Calling the new location Bluff City, they began dividing the land, building log cabins, and digging a ditch from the river for crop irrigation.

The Bluff Fort grew into an open square surrounded by cottonwood log cabins with all cabin doors and windows facing inward. The exact number of cabins in the Fort is unknown, but ranged from 38 – 63 cabins. Inside the Fort, the Bluff City Meetinghouse was completed in the fall of 1880 and served for 14 years as a church, school, dance hall, and public meeting place.

The Meetinghouse is opened to the visitors showing a film and providing brochures. The Fort was a fascinating place to learn amazing history of high spirit.

I admire the restoration that was done on this farmhouse in Laketown, Utah. A new foundation was poured next to the house which was then moved. A new porch was added and the windmill rebuilt. This is an active farm with sheep, a large garden, and a roadside produce stand. Big Creek is in the foreground.

How did a package restore my faith in humanity?

A happy girl and mom all thanks to (Nicole) flickr.com/photos/murfysflaw/ . An amazing box of clothes was waiting at our door Monday after work. We dusted off the snow and found inside the most beautiful dresses, full of bows and dots. Topping it off was this gorgeous blue coat with fur lining the hood and cuffs and a hand muff with a dog poking out of the top. I squealed with delight yelling to Loren to come and see the awesomeness I was staring at and Larra proceeded to go "pfff pff" her way of saying woof. Instantly, plans started in my head of wearing one dress to her birthday party and another for Christmas.

How did this kind act from a virtual flickr friend restore my faith in humanity? Larra spent 2 months in the NICU and for those of you who have been there you know the hell and happiness that this type of journey brings. Friends and family gifted us beautiful preemie outfits and knitted Larra adorable hats to keep my spirits high. As babies do, Larra eventually outgrew these outfits. After hearing that our neighbors coworker had triplet girls in the NICU just a few months after Larra was discharged I decided that I would give her those clothes. I did this twice because she outgrew more clothes while they were still there. Never a thanks, not a card, not a voicemail not a single word I ever heard from this woman. Eventually I confirmed with one of the nurses that she had in fact, received the clothes and she had. I can't say I am proud that I was bummed that I didn't receive any type of acknowledgement but I have to say I was disappointed.

Tuesday when I was sharing my exciting news of the box that arrived with my co-worker, Randi she said, "this box, it is the universe thanking you You didn't get an immediate acknowledgment but someone just paid it forward to you".

So Nicole, a simple kind gesture rocked my world. Thanks---a million times.

The famous “Binns Clock” on the corner of Princes Street and Hope Street in Edinburgh has been restored. The building used to be occupied by the department store Binns which was taken over by House of Fraser in 1953. The clock was installed in 1960 and was an iconic meeting place. The Frasers store closed in 2018 and the building is currently being converted into the Johnnie Walker Experience. The clock restoration work was carried out by the Cumbria Clock Company who also repaired the musical mechanism which plays traditional Scottish tunes every half an hour as the kilted figures march out of the clock. In keeping with tradition, the Highland figures will emerge to the musical accompaniment every seven and 37 minutes past the hour.

After several years in isolation in Poduene depot in Sofia, ex-BDZ 44 083 now runs a second life. The newest private operator bought several electric locomotives from the State company and completely overhauled them in Czech Republic. On the photo 44 083 is acting as a helper machine of a coal train to Bobov dol power plant. In front of the train is a diesel locomotive type LDE2100 (ex CFR 60-0819).

What happens to imagination in a logic world that makes people work until they get sick, long for horrible things that they don´t need and walking around feeling bad about themselves? What happens to the human soul when imagination is forgotten?

This image has been waiting a long time to be edited! I shot it over two years ago. Everything was well planned, from the prop and costume to the location. But I never knew how to edit it. Until today, which I´m very happy for :D The edit isn´t what I thought it would be when I first shot the image, but that´s what´s amazing with Photoshop- that you never know where it will end!

The engineer and conductor of Maine Northern Railway Train 901-31 converse as they pass the restored station at Oakfield, which is home to the Oakfield Railroad Museum, which is the de facto Bangor and Aroostook museum which is open in the summertime.

About 10 cars back a track foreman is keeping a watchful eye as 901-31 crawls over a sun kink on the bridge at the south end of the yard.
