Governor Markell thanked dozens of people for attending today’s Volunteer & Resource Fair at Bethel AME Church in Wilmington. The fair was a result of conversations the Governor has had with residents about how they could make a difference in their community through volunteerism and other forms of community engagement.

The free event included representatives from Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council, the Food Bank of Delaware, Stubbs Elementary School, the Boy Scouts of Delaware, Friendship House, Henrietta Johnson Medical Center, Beautiful Gate Outreach Center, as well as programs provided by DHSS’s State Office of Volunteerism, including AmeriCorps, Volunteer Delaware, Volunteer Delaware 50+, and Foster Grandparents, and DHSS’ Northeast State Service Center.

“I have listened as residents of Wilmington have told me they want to be part of the solution to the city’s challenges,” Governor Markell said. “By bringing together volunteer and community groups, we can support the citizens of Wilmington’s Eastside as they work together to build a stronger, healthier and safer community.”

The Governor was joined by DHSS Secretary Rita Landgraf and Division of State Service Centers Director Renee Beaman.

Wilmington Mayor Dennis P. Williams, who was away at the U.S. Conference of Mayors, said he was pleased that the Governor and Secretary Landgraf “are promoting civic involvement and sharing resources in city neighborhoods.”

The European Commission’s Roadmap for a Resource Efficient Europe highlights the challenge of sustaining growth in the 21st Century as vital resources grow scarce, including those used to produce energy. By 2050 the EU needs to achieve a 4 to 10-fold increase in resource efficiency, and major gains are needed by 2020.

Policy makers must now launch a vital shift to resource-lean production, and eco-innovation. What new technologies and innovations can deliver large-scale gains? How can a systems approach to policy speed progress? And how can governments accelerate breakthroughs by creating market conditions that reward resource efficiency?

The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office, Cameron County Children’s Advocacy Center, Inc. and Brownsville Police Department hosted its 8th Annual Victims Resource Expo April 26 at H-E-B in Brownsville.

The Expo’s purpose is to provide community awareness on the agencies that directly service victims of violent crime. Crime Victims’ Rights Week is April 21-27, and organizations nationwide are working together to assist victims with overcoming challenges after experiencing a violent crime.

The District Attorney’s Office has a Crime Victims Assistance Program that provides services to all victims of violent crime. The program is an integral component in the criminal justice process. Since its inception in 1999, more than 10,000 victims of violent crime have been provided with direct services.

“Our goal is to help victims become survivors,” District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said.

Numerous agencies participated in the Expo that included giveaways, door prizes and informational booths for the public. A special wreath ceremony took place where family members of victims commemorate the loss of their loved one. Families displayed wreaths they created to reflect information about the victim.

This year’s theme – New Challenges, New Solutions – reflects the increasingly complex mission of victim advocates today. Advocates face emerging challenges that include changing demographics, immigration, human trafficking, terrorism and the use of technology to commit crimes.

For more information, call the Crime Victims Assistance Program at (956) 544-0849.
