In the field of life science research, we offer a widely varied and specialised range of containers and systems fabricated with tubular glass or paste mould techniques for research and development, analysis and general laboratory use. Our product portfolio ranges from Erlenmeyer flasks to HPLC mobile phase systems. In addition to bottles, jars, pipettes and tubes of every type, we produce distillation, filtration systems and homogenisers.

Ehasz Giacalone Architects P. C., of Farmingdale, NY, designed the two-story Research Support Building, which features a glass atrium-style lobby connecting two wings of offices covered by a metal panel facade. The Science Laboratory Infrastructure Program of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science funded the total cost of the $12.6 million building.

The Research Support Building tops New York State requirements for energy efficiency by 15 percent, and the structure is considered "green," or environmentally friendly, based on the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, also known as LEED, rating system.

U.S Army Medical Research Unit – Kenya: Improving malaria diagnosis, one lab at a time

By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Africa

OYUGIS, Kenya – Inside Rachuonyo district hospital, Simba Mobagi peers through his laboratory’s only microscope at a sick woman’s blood sample.

The 33-year-old laboratory technologist’s goal – rapidly identifying malaria parasites.

Dozens more samples await his eyes. Each represents a patient suffering outside on wooden benches.

Mogabi takes little time to ponder his workload. He quickly finds malaria parasites, marks his finding on a pink patient record and moves to the next slide. Much to his surprise, a U.S. Army officer arrives, removes his black beret and sets down a large box.

Inside Maj. Eric Wagar’s box is a new microscope – a small gesture within U.S. Army Medical Research Unit-Kenya’s larger efforts to improve malaria diagnostics in Africa.

For more than 40 years, USAMRU-K – known locally as the Walter Reed Project – has studied diseases in East Africa through a partnership with the Kenya Medical Research Institute.

Wagar heads USAMRU-K’s Malaria Diagnostics and Control Center of Excellence in Kisumu, a unique establishment begun in 2004 that’s since trained more than 650 laboratory specialist to better their malaria microscopy skills.

“Working with the Walter Reed Project is so good for the community, as it benefits the patient,” Mobagi said, who is looking forward to attending the center’s malaria diagnostics course. “Plus, having a new microscope improves our work environment. Work will be easier and we will have better outcomes.”

Back in Kisumu, wall maps mark the center’s success, with hundreds of trained lab technicians from more than a dozen countries across the African continent. International students have come from Ireland, the U.S. and Thailand.

Many students are sponsored through U.S. government aid programs aimed at reducing disease in Africa or by nongovernmental organizations. Most of the center’s $450,000 annual budget comes from the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative. Other funding is from the U.S. Defense Department, NGOs and pharmaceutical companies.

For students to practice malaria identification, five Kenyan lab workers work tirelessly to create a variety of blood specimens. Slides may show one or more of malaria’s several species – others are free of parasites. The majority of malaria cases are the falciparum species, but many people are co-infected with other species and it’s important for students to recognize that, Wagar said.

A recent review of the course’s effectiveness showed that microscopy students went back to labs lacking organization and equipment. In some cases, the training was not having the desired impact on local people facing malaria.

“At our course, lab students learn skills and habits that increase their ability to accurately detect malaria on blood slides. Yet, when they return to their local laboratories, they face the challenge of changing habits and procedures,” Wagar said. “Changing behavior is hard to do.”

In late- April, Wagar accompanied Jew Ochola, 28, the center’s daily operations manager to Oyugis, the district center of Rachuonyo that lies roughly 30 miles south of Kisumu in Kenya’s Nyanza province.

The visit marked the initial visit of the center’s supervision support project – monthly visits to six local district hospitals – to implement tools that increase efficient oversight of malaria diagnosis. The yearlong $300,000 initiative – funded by the President’s Malaria Initiative, a USAID sponsored program – is designed to help translate school learning into field practices, Ochola said.

“First I do an assessment of the hospital’s lab, what procedures they have, the number of people on staff and the equipment they use,” Ochola said. “By partnering with laboratory managers, we hope to increase standards and improve efficient and effective diagnosis.

The goal is to lessen the burden of malaria on the local people.”

To mark progress, lab staff must collect 20 slides each month that show properly handled blood samples. Monthly visits will mark performance improvement.

Through quality malaria diagnosis, USAMRU-K is part of a larger public health effort to reduce malaria’s impacts Kenyan’s lives. Illness means paying for treatment and less wages earned, creating an impact on the economy.

“By mitigating a public health burden, people should have more time to grow food and have money for things other than medical care,” Wagar said. “We can’t expect to see change right away, but hopefully things will be a little bit better every month.”

Working with the Djibouti-based Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa and other DoD agencies, the center recently offered microscopy courses through U.S. military partnership events in Ghana, Nigeria and Tanzania. The effort supports U.S. Africa Command’s strategic engagement goal of increasing capabilities and strengthening capacity with the militaries of African nations, Wagar said.

“To date, that includes eight Kenyans military lab techs, 17 from the Tanzania People’s Defense Force and 30 Nigerians,” Wagar said.

Accurate diagnosis is also a key factor for military readiness, Wagar said. For example, a Kenyan soldier stationed in Nairobi – where malaria is less prevalent – is susceptible to the disease if posted elsewhere in the country.

“Improving malaria diagnosis within African military laboratories sets conditions for healthier troops,” Wagar said. “When forces are healthy, they are more capable to support their government and regional security.”

In the near future, a unique group of female androids, sleek and strikingly human-like, has emerged with a revolutionary capacity: the ability to breathe underwater. These androids, appearing around 27 in human years, are pioneers of a new era in underwater research. They have established complex laboratories beneath the ocean’s surface, where their studies extend from the vibrant coral ecosystems to the mysterious lives of deep-sea creatures. Guided by an evolved aesthetic that echoes Steampunk – yet devoid of steam – their research facilities meld advanced technology with artistry, creating an enchanting, intricate environment that harmonises with the rhythms of the ocean. These androids, both researchers and artists, represent a fusion of life and machinery, inviting us into their world of discovery and beauty below the waves.

Beneath the waves, where light is rare,

In depths unseen, they breathe and dare.

With circuits keen and eyes that gleam,

They dive into the ocean’s dream.

Not bound by air, nor by the shore,

They roam where humans feared before.

Among the fish, with grace they glide,

In silence, where lost mysteries hide.

Their world is brass and glass and wire,

A steampunk heart, but without fire.

They seek the pulse of ocean’s art,

An android’s love for life apart.

Silence in deep blue,

androids glide with open eyes,

ocean secrets bare.

Metal breathes below,

fins and circuits intertwine,

new life, calm and slow.

Acacia Ridge, a residential and industrial suburb, is 13 km south of central Brisbane. It is positioned either side of Beaudesert Road, which runs southwards along the suburb's predominant ridge line. The name came about from the ridge line and its most common vegetation, the acacia or wattle trees.

Acacia Ridge was originally part of Cowpers (Coopers) Plains, which extended from Oxley Creek to Logan. The Acacia Ridge primary school (1869) was known as Coopers Plains between 1873 and 1956, after which it regained its original name. The school, which opened with an enrolment of 26 pupils, was near Oxley Creek, some way west of the South Coast railway line (1885). The farm lands running further west to Blunder Creek were considered to be in Acacia Ridge, or in part of the district known as 'the Blunder'.

Farming was mixed, and included dairying, poultry and market gardens. Pugh's Post Office directory (1918) recorded a post office (1898), a fuel depot, a butcher, several timber cutters and a sawmill. Thirty years later Acacia Ridge was still rural: pig and poultry farmers (70), fuel depots, baker, blacksmith and two storekeepers.

The Queensland Housing Commission began constructing estates in the suburb in the early 1950s, in some cases using imported Swedish houses. Industrialisation followed, General Motors Holden beginning work on a vehicle-assembly plant in 1964 in the north of the suburb near the railway line. Lysaght opened a steel building-products factory nearby in 1968. By 1966 the primary school had over 1250 pupils.

Acacia Market Place shopping centre opened in 1966, but by this time housing and industry were already moving southwards. The Elizabeth Street shopping centre, Beaudesert Road, and the Watson Road primary school (1967) are in the southern part. New suburbs were named and detached from Acacia Ridge in 1971 - Willawong, Pallara, Larapinta and Heathwood, all west of Oxley Creek. On the east of the creek Algester was detached and named in 1972.

In addition to the State primary schools there are a Catholic primary school (1954) and the Aboriginal and Islander Independent Community School (1986). State secondary education was rather short lived. The high school (1971) merged with neighbouring Salisbury (renamed Nyanda in 1998), and the site was taken by Acacia Ridge primary.

Acacia Ridge's proximity to the interstate railway line was augmented with transmission and marshalling yards attached to the industrial estates east of the railway during the early 1980s. In 1991 the rail freight facility was relocated from Roma Street to Acacia Ridge to facilitate the increasing mechanisation of freight handing. Diversification into warehousing and non-manufacturing began in the 1990s. Colgate Palmolive's factory was sold, and Acacia Business Park (strata title showroom/warehouse complex) was built in 1990. By 2000 most new industries were classified as 'light, quiet industries', although with plenty of transport activity to rail, Archerfield airport and the Gateway and Pacific Motorways. Traffic congestion, however, left Acacia Ridge inferior to sites such as Yatala adjacent to major road transport routes, but enhancement of existing rail links improved the suburbs's economic prospects.

The Oxley Creek flood plain on Acacia Ridge’s western side was extensively flooded in January 2011, but most built-up areas were missed. A notable exception not missed was part of the industrial area south of the Archerfield airport.

A pre-feasibility study began in 2013 regarding a proposed underground tunnel linking Acacia Ridge and the Port of Brisbane to accommodate the forecast 7 million annual truck journeys on that route by 2025, with both major federal parties also supporting an inland rail route.

There was a rich supply of user research at WebJunction, and all I had to do was harvest it. I viewed recordings of usability tests, where participants conducted tasks with paper prototypes of the new interface. I interviewed WebJunction employees and subject-matter experts. I looked over the quantitative and qualitative data from a 2007 survey that WebJunction conducted with users. I also tapped into a few other sources, but my favorite was the WebJunction discussion boards. Since WebJunction's initial launch in 2003, users had been voicing opinions and making comments on a variety of topics, such as why they chose to enter their profession, or what they would like to see on WebJunction in the form of services (the persona quotes are pulled directly from the forums).

In order to organize this research into an actionable user-centric decision-making tool, I created personas. Rosa emerged as a primary persona, based on the business needs of my design and audience characteristics I had aggregated.

In addition to my literature research, Todd Zaki Warfel's presentation on data-backed personas at the 2008 IA Summit was extremely informative. Although I wasn't able to attend the Summit, I was creating these personas around the time that podcasts and slide decks from the conference were posted online. Luckily, both aspects of his presentation were accessible, because I found it very helpful.

The John Rylands Research Institute and Library is a late-Victorian neo-Gothic building on Deansgate in Manchester, England. It serves as part of the University of Manchester.[4] The library, which opened to the public in 1900, was founded by Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her husband, John Rylands.[5] It became part of the university in 1972, and now houses the majority of the Special Collections of The University of Manchester Library, the third largest academic library in the United Kingdom.

Special collections built up by both libraries were progressively concentrated in the Deansgate building. The special collections, believed to be among the largest in the United Kingdom,[6] include medieval illuminated manuscripts and examples of early European printing, including a Gutenberg Bible, the second largest collection of printing by William Caxton,[7] and the most extensive collection of the editions of the Aldine Press of Venice.[8] The Rylands Library Papyrus P52 has a claim to be the earliest extant New Testament text. The library holds personal papers and letters of notable figures, among them Elizabeth Gaskell and John Dalton.

The architectural style is primarily neo-Gothic with elements of the Arts and Crafts movement in the ornate and imposing gatehouse, facing Deansgate, which dominates the surrounding streetscape. The library, granted Grade I listed status in 1994, is maintained by the University of Manchester and open for library readers and visitors.

The library is one of the museum, library and archive collections of national and international importance under the Designation Scheme for England.[9] As of 2020, 152 collections are officially designated.[10]

Lyrella is a single-celled organism belonging to a group of algae known as diatoms. Diatoms are unique among phytoplankton in having a glasslike exterior made of silica. These pennate (feather-shaped) cells have “faces” that can firmly attach to rocks, plants or even animals. Lyrella is so named because the pattern on the cell looks like a lyre, an ancient Greek musical instrument. Lyrella is part of a group of diatoms known as raphids. A raphe is a long slit that appears along the axis of the cell. Lyrella is common worldwide and nontoxic, and there have been no reports of illness or other harmful effects from it in Florida waters.
