The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl® is a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Middle and high school student teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. These teams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.

The Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl® is a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Middle and high school student teams are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. Teams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.

By combining engineering and operations domain expertise and creative integration of advanced hardware and software, JLab delivers advanced computational solutions that address complex data and analytic challenges.

 

Working in multidisciplinary teams, JLab connects research to engineering to operations, providing the tools necessary to innovate quickly and field results faster.

Featuring more than 30 experts from Jefferson Lab, NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton and Newport News Shipbuilding, the event exposed Hampton Roads high schoolers and their teachers to the vast array of engineering and related disciplines — mechanical, chemical, aerospace, nuclear, electrical, to name a few. It also tested students’ wits with hands-on design and engineering challenges based on each facility’s mission.

 

The event is a celebration of National Engineers Week and is sponsored by the Peninsula Engineers Council (PEC).

The Chesapeake Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers (CSAAPT) is convening a meeting at Jefferson Lab to learn about the lab's research initiatives and take tours of the accelerator facilities. The objective is to equip physics educators with valuable insights to integrate into their classroom teaching.

Hall A is the largest of Jefferson Lab's three experimental halls. It is 174 feet across and 80 feet tall from floor to ceiling. Hall A is outfitted with two primary detector systems – both high-resolution spectrometers and each weighing about 450 tons. The systems act like huge microscopes, allowing scientists to "see" inside an atom. Hall A is used primarily for experiments that study the structure of nuclei, and of protons and neutrons.

Hall D is dedicated to the operation of a large-acceptance detector for experiments with a broad-band, linearly-polarized photon beam produced by ~12 GeV electrons from CEBAF.

Lechner preps the samples for an electropolishing chemical bath, which smooths out the surface quality equivalent to the interior of niobium cavity, and helps understand the purity content inside the cavity.

Rebuilt quadrupole magnets are ready for shipment at Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Va. These rebuilt magnets will be shipped to Brookhaven National Lab to be a part of the Electron Storage Ring for the Electron-Ion Collider. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024.

These magnets came from Argonne National Laboratory, which shipped the 30-year-old Advanced Photon Source (APS) magnets to Brookhaven and Jefferson Lab, where they will be re-purposed for use as part of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a state-of-the-art particle collider being led by those other two labs and that will be built at Brookhaven.
