Difficult to see in this picture, the unique features of this aircraft are a canard (forward control surface, in lieu of a horizontal tail assembly) and forward swept wings. This design turned out to be so inherently unstable aerodynamically that a computer controlled "fly by wire" system had to be developed because it was virtually impossible for a human pilot constantly to make the frequent control corrections (up to 40/second) necessary to keep the plane flying.
