This satisfies requirement 4 since the top of the parking lot forms a repeated grid pattern. I took this in aperture priority mode and used the rule-of-thirds composition, with 2/3 of the picture for the pattern to emphasize the subject. For post processing I adjusted the color contrast in Lightroom to enhance the yellow shade, and did minor cropping to adjust the composition.
This photo satisfies requirement 4. I placed this model car on a blank white sheet of paper, and lit it with a red LED light, as well as an iPad and phone with red images pulled up and at half brightness. I chose the red lighting to blend nicely with the color of the model car and draw attention to the black details of the car.
This picture satisfies requirement 1. I used a fast shutter speed of 1/640s which was sufficient to freeze the jumping action of my friend. The ISO was set auto-adjusted to 800 to allow sufficient amount of light in to show part of her face, but this also resulted in a little overexposed legs. The image was post-processed in Lightroom to reduce exposure and highlights and increase contrast.
This photo satisfies Requirement 1 which was to create a poorly exposed picture. In this case I underexposed a picture taken on a bright, sunny day. I achieved this by using low aperture to allow less light into the lens as well as increasing the shutter speed to do the same. The low aperture also allowed for the the flowers to be more clearly visible so not everything disappeared into darkness.
This photo was taken outside of Guggenheim to meet requirement 2. I kept the camera as parallel as possible to the building, but I used an aperture of f/4.0 and shutter speed of 1/2500 to help reduce camera shake since I did not have a tripod. I did some basic stuff in Lightroom like adjust the exposure and contrast a bit since the sun kind of washed out the picture.
This picture satisfies requirement 1. I took this picture on the roof overlooking the city and the landscape. I set on camera on the roof so it's stable, then I used a low shutter speed and higher aperture so the picture is not underexposed. I wanted to keep the ISO low so there isn't too much noise. Then I focused on the city and took this picture. Lastly, I adjusted the black and white settings in LR to make the mountain more obvious.
This photo satisfies the requirement 3. I took a photo of my hand waiving through the grass and moved my camera along the hand movement. This made the photo to achieve showing the action by blurring the background. The hand is pretty clear and the contrast between the motion blurred background forms this photo. I used a shutter speed priority mode to use large shutter speed of 1/5 and adjust aperture. I used a small focal length to have larger field of view. No editing.
This photograph satisfies Requirement 3 (Outdoor Available Light). I posed my friend behind a bush and captured her in the moment. The sunlight coming from the right served as both the key light and fill light. I really liked the colors of this photo and how the light bounced off of her hair.
I used a wide aperture to blur the foreground and background, and reduced the shutter speed to 1/800 sec to compensate the lighting. I also added more vibrance into the photo during post-processing.
This photo satisfies requirement 3. I took a picture of the quad and used a long shutter speed to draw my name (Ami). I used tripod to stabilize my camera and used a self-timer to go to the position and start drawing.
I used a large aperture of f/5.6 as I don't really need large depth of field. I used a long shutter speed of 5 to have enough time to draw. I used a long focal length to have large field of view. No editing.
This photo satisfies requirement 5 of the color element. I saw this flower as I was walking along the street, and the bright orange color caught my eye. The orange contrasts with the dark green leaves and the generally darker background near the flower. I placed the flower in the middle of my photo to highlight this and show the symmetry.
It was evening when I took this photo so I used ISO 400 and a slower shutter speed of 1/40 to create a balanced exposure and make the orange stand out.
This photo satisfies Requirement 4.
I was using a Canon EOS 700D EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS with an aperture of f/4.5, focal length of 32.0 mm, exposure time of 1/40, and ISO of 800 to capture this image.
This photo was the picture of a hanging flowerpot. The original color of the pot was cream-like, and this photo was the image when I turned on the LED of the billboard on the left of the flowerpot and changed the color of LED to red.
I did no post-processing to this image.
The photo satisfied requirement 2 where the architecture in the photo does not show any vertical vanishing point. The photo was taken from a long distance so that no vertical vanishing point will appear. The photo was taken with a fast shutter speed of 1/1000 to allow less light since it was taken under the sun.
Post-editing (lightroom): Turns out with a 1/1000 shutter speed is still not enough to clearly show the building so I lower the exposure and higher the contrast to make the entire building more visible and clear. The color of the building also stands out more after the edition.
This photo is used to fulfill requirement 2 regarding an outdoor night scene of architecture. I took this picture standing in my backyard looking at the house right across. The light from house and the houses surrounding the subject house helped illuminate it. To take this photo a tripod and long shutter speed were used to avoid any sort of motion blur and allow enough light to come in. No changes needed to be made to the ISO because a long shutter speed was used to allow for enough light. During post-processing, I slightly increased the exposure and highlights to have the lights on the diagonals of the house pop out a little more.
I took this photo at sunset, which satisfied requirement 5. However, due to the poor air quality in Beijing, it was hard to refract rich golden color and spread the color. So, the only method that I could improve was to increase the color temperature and color tint for this photo and let it more feel like the time before sunset.
The clouds was pretty light, so I put the focus point to the wall, and set the shutter speed as 1/400s.
However, the original version of the photo was so extreme that the grass and trees were all in shadow and hard to differentiate. So I increased details in dark and black regions and reduce highlight.
This picture of Madrona Hall showcases requirement 2. This side of the building is flat, and the horizontal lines are parallel to each other. For this shot, I set the aperture to f/10 to ensure the whole building would be in focus. I was also a fair distance away from the dorm hall, helping make the DOF wider.
Post processing, the angles of the building were caved in, and I also was not standing in the direct center of the building. To fix this, I used the perspective tool in affinity, and set my reference lines as the white line in denny's field, and the roof top. I then shifted the perspective around so that those two lines were parallel to each other. After which, I increased the contrast and the brightness so make the picture look less dull.
This photo is meant to satisfy requirement 1 regarding using an S-curve. It's meant to convey a sense of depth with the winding road turning the curve. This photo was taken by standing in the middle of the road and focusing the camera on the road curve. To take this photo, I used a tripod and a shutter speed of 1/125 and f-stop number of f/5.6 to allow for a deeper depth of field than normal and prevent too much light from entering the camera as it was pretty sunny when I took the photo.
During post-processing, I decreased the saturation of all colors except for yellow in order to lead the viewer's eyes straight to the road and the curve. Additionally, I used photoshop to remove the potholes on the road to allow for a more seamless road.
This photo satisfies requirement 4. After taking the first portrait photos of my grandfather, the sun later moved so that it was not directly coming through the skylight. This presented me the perfect opportunity to use flash and still use the less bright ambient light that was coming through the windows and skylight. The flash was the key light and lit up my grandfather's face and shirt, while the sun coming indirectly through the windows and skylight served as the fill light, lighting up the surrounding room enough to capture some detail in the background. I took this while my grandfather slept and I thought he looked peaceful. I used an f stop of 4 to blow out the background and really highlight the subject along with the lighting. I used a slightly slower shutter speed than the other photos due to the darker conditions, but still needed it fast enough to avoid motion blur.
This photograph of a lone leaf satisfies requirements 1 and 4, "Focus on the foreground" and "Plants". I like this picture because it was the only leaves existing on this single branch, and I felt like it symbolized new growth now that the season is slowly starting to get warmer. In order to take this shot, I focused on the leaves itself with a lower aperture of f/5.6, in order to blur most of the background out in order to highlight the object in the photo. I lowered the ISO in order to reduce the exposure because the leaves were in the direct light and I did not want the picture to look "washed out". I also used lightroom for basic processing, such as increasing clarity and increasing temperature for the warmer tones.
I use high shutter speed in order to keep capture the all the detail of the flower. the sequence of the four picture shows my friend is blowing the flower.
i use low iso to decrease sensitivity of the light, since light from outside is already to bright.
This image satisfies requirement 3 - Outdoor Available Light Portrait. I used shutter priority mode and set it to the max I could handhold at and not induce blur. Aperture (f/2.7) and ISO (400) were automatic. There is a flood light above and to the left of the subject that acts as a key light to illuminate the hair and back of the head, while the waning overcast daylight provided the fill light for the rest of the image.
This picture satisfies requirement 1 because it is an outdoor night scene of a tree. I set the shutter speed to 1/4 in order to have more light exposed.
The photo fulfills requirement 1 of the rubric, that is an outdoor night scene of nature. The photo is of a tree and the light source is a lamp post right next to the tree. I tried to click the bark of the tree without having the lamp post in the frame. The photo is clicked using Canon EOS 80D with focal length 42mm. The aperture was set to f/25 with shutter speed 4 seconds and ISO 200. The aperture was reduced to just have the bark in focus and making the tree surroundings dark. The shutter speed for quite long to make sure appropriate amount of light enters the camera. Some post processing is done to the image to enhance the color and contrast of the image.
This photo satisfies requirement 4: Repeating pattern. The lights, bricks, and steel gate all are repeating patterns in the photo.
I shot at f/5.0 to focus in on the details of the building with a 1/30 exposure and 200 ISO.
In post processing, I decreased the exposure, increased contrast, increased the whites and increased the saturation of the yellow and orange to make the lights pop out more.
This photo satisfies requirement 3 with a car in focus and motion blurring the background. I used shutter speed priority mode for this photo then set the shutter speed to 1/15s and let the camera to set the appropriate aperture. I think this photo is very interesting because the whole front of the car is sharpe in focus and the rest is blurred. It definitely showed the speed of the subject.
This photo satisfies requirement 2. This photo of a basketball shot and making it into the hoop very clearly shows the motion of the ball itself. Even though the hoop and net itself is still, the ball inside is still moving as we can see how blurry it is. This was achievable by slowing down the shutter speed, in this case to 1/40 s, and keeping still as the ball was shot into the basket.
This picture satisfies requirement 3. I took this in manual mode by the roadside, and set the shutter speed to a relatively lower speed (1/40) to add a motion blur effect to the background. Then I panned the camera along with an incoming car to make sure the car stays in relative focus. I ended up clicking a picture where the car was in focus but the background was blurry.
There was no post processing done on this picture.
This photo fulfills requirement 3. I found dark area of a street corner and stood in the center of the picture. I had the shutter speed set to 13s had to hold still during the photo. I had two friends in the background and asked them to draw whatever they wanted. They used the flash in their phones and drew "wings"; when they were finished, they turned off the flash and ran out of frame. They wanted to see a small ghost effect of them drawing the light paintings. You can see there body structures behind the paintings.
This photo satisfies requirement 3. I shot this on the corner of a field in Ravenna park. I wanted to include the whole field so I took around 10 different shots and stitched them together using photoshop's photomerge tool. To avoid motion blur of the people I used a shutter speed of 1/400. I used a f-stop of f/25 to keep a larger depth of field in the panorama but I lost some of the focus during the post-processing step. I used auto ISO which set most of the pictures at around 6400 which makes sense with the large f-stop and fast shutter speed.
This photo satisfies requirement 3 because I took a photo from an angle below the tree branch to give the effect that it was popping out towards the viewer. I also did this to add a sense of depth to the tree branch. My inspiration for taking this photo came from me noticing it outside the front yard of my house. The tree was in direct sunlight so I had to make the shutter speed very fast to let less light in. The photo came out pretty well and I did not have to adjust the exposure or contrast in post processing, but I did decrease the shadows and highlights to make more detail show on the white flower and to make the branch feel more 3-D.
This photo satisfies requirements 2 and 5. I focused on getting a nice reflection of the trees and the sky in this photo, and I didn't want to increase the ISO to keep the noise low, so I increased the aperture. The whole view in the photo looks shallower since I shot it at a low f stop. I also post-processed it in lightroom, to enhance the contrast of the photo, but I wanted to keep more detail of the trees, so I didn't adjust it too much. And I tuned the temp of the photo to be more like a golden color for requirement 5.
this photo satisfies requirement 1. I shot this using the car rearview mirror at f/4.5 at 28mm on aperture priority mode. Iso was at 400 since it wasn't that sunny.
post processing I increase vibrance and contrast along with decreases highlights since the shine from the car was a little much.
I took this photo on of my little brother in my house, using the indoor lighting. I had him sit on the couch with the window being on the right side, letting the light come in and hit the right side of his face. It also seems that half of his face is smiling while the other one isn't which fits with the separation. The light on the right serves as the key light, making it appear somewhat like rembrandt lighting.
This photo satisfies requirement 1. In this photo, I wanted to try to use an s-curve as providing a sense of depth. In this photo, my grandparents were walking on a trail. The curve of the trail helps illustrate the progress each one of them had made as they embarked on this journey. (To capture their rapid movements I went ahead and used a shutter speed of 1/400s).
Demonstrate the use of color as the primary element. I shoot this photo in pike place market and used the auto focus mode.
This photo fulfills requirement 1. For this photo I wanted to demonstrate lines formed by my pencil, keyboard and notebook. To take this picture I used a higher f-stop of F13 to make more of the space come into focus. A slightly slower shutter speed of 1/3 was used to make more light come in as there wasn't much light in the environment. I also used a focal length of 22mm which allowed to capture more of the space from the same distance. No image processing was done afterwards.
This image fulfills requirement 3 of the rubric - bug or small animals. I tried to click pictures of bugs but the pictures were of poor quality. I took this photo just as a backup in case I couldn't get a bug. This macro photo shows the feathers and color details of the duck which is the subject of the image. The image was taken using SONY ILCA-77M2 with focal length 50mm. The aperture was set to f/3.2 with shutter speed set to 1/320 and the ISO set to 100. The shutter speed was not too high because the duck did not move much from its position.
This photo fulfills requirement 1. This was taken in the studio set up in the CSE building. The key and fill lights are two different box lights that were both diffused. I set up the fill light to the right of the camera and the key light to the front left of the subject. This photo was taken with my Canon Rebel T5 but with my friends SD card as I forgot mine the day of the studio shoot. I shot this in the P setting and only adjusted the AEB a bit to adjust for the lighting of the shot. I also used Photoshop to turn the photo to grayscale and touch up the features of the subject as well as the contrast and brightness of the photo.
This photo satisfies requirement 1. I took this photo with Nikon 105 macro lens and used aperture priority mode. I used f3.0 to separate the flower from the background and also it can give me a very high shutter speed to keep the subject flower sharp.
This photo satisfies Requirement 3 as there is a bug (bee) in the pedal of the flower. I tried to get up close to possibly satisfy Requirement 1 or 2 for this photo as well but the bee flew away too quickly. Therefore, this is the best photo I can get of the bee on the flower pedal.
This photo meets requirement 1 and 4. I focused on the central of the closet flower, which is the upper one. The other flowers and background are kindly blurred. As you can see in the photo, the tiny tomentum on the petals. The background is in the shadow so the flowers are isolated and draw attention. I like its bright white and a bit pink color, feeling innocent and peaceful.
A hamster. This satisfies requirement 3. I took this with 1600 ISO with shutter speed at 1/50 as the light isn't very bright on the indoor as the outdoor. This setting could capture a clear and sharp image of a hamster and I used Lightroom to adjust better lighting.
This photo fulfills requirement 5 because there are a mix of different bright colors that form a really great design. This is a picture of my living room curtains. They stood out to me as really colorful because they were in direct sunlight and looked very vibrant. In post processing, I increased the exposure, highlights, shadows, and blacks and decreased the contrast and whites. This helped make the photo look even more colorful.
This image fulfills requirement 1 where the closest thing in the field of view to the camera should be focussed and the background should be blurry. This picture was clicked using SONY ILCA-77M2 with focal length 30mm. The aperture was set to f/4.5 with shutter speed 1/320 and ISO 500. This was done so that the picture is bright enough so that even the small details are visible to the eye. This picture was clicked in the Medicinal Herb Garden at UW Seattle campus. No post-processing was done to the image.
This photo satisfies the requirement for the S-curve. We can see that the winding path leads our eyes towards our TA for the class. It also provides a sense of depth to the photo where we can see that at the end that our TA is far away.
The settings for the camera were used just to have a correctly exposed photo. Having a narrow aperture does not really serve much purpose for this photo.
In post, I adjusted the brightness and contrast as the photo ended up being more underexposed than I wanted. Other than that, not much was changed during post.
I took this photo of natural texture as water- hoping that this also satisfies the requirements as it is natural. I thought that if I got close enough to the water, I could see the ripples and the beauty of the reflection with the sunlight, as well as the contrasts between the shadow and brightness. In the next picture, I explore how rich I can make the photo look through post processing. This photo was taken with a focal length of 37mm, but I also did not feel the need to use a small aperture as it was easy to capture the whole scene.
This photo satisfies requirement 5. I came back to the rhododendron bush during the day as I felt that the light pink flowers would make a nice contrast to the dark green surroundings. I used automatic (A) settings to determine f-number, ISO, and shutter speed as I knew that I would be editing the picture afterward.
I edited the photo in Adobe Photoshop by creating two layers of the original picture. I desaturated the background layer to remove the color. For the upper layer, I selected every element that matched the color of the flowers and deleted the inverse of the selection. The colored layer was then laid above the black and white layer so that the colors of the flower (pink, white, brown) are isolated.
This meets requirement 3, which is 'bug'. This photo was taken at UW botanical garden. I used EF-S18.55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM to take this photo. I used f/5.6 for aperture, 52.0mm focal length, 1/800 shutter speed, and 6400 iso. I had to use high shutter speed because the lady bug kept moving around and it was pretty fast. I used auto white balance.
This photo satisfies requirement 2 & 4. This photo of a window in the library from the inside demonstrates shape and pattern. We can see a pattern created from these two dimensional diamonds throughout the entirety of the photo. Some editing was done to decrease the exposure and increase the contrast.
This image meets requirement 4 by having the boba lit up purple by the GAMES sign, and my friends face lit up green by the DVD'S sign.
To take this image, I used a wide aperture (f/1.4) to allow me to use a high enough shutter speed that I could still hand hold the capture while keeping the ISO low.
