Note for my americans followers :
In France "republican" isn't as strongly tied to a party as it is in the US. We do have the party "Les Républicains", which was once a big party... Then did only 4,7% on the presidential elections of 2022.
Here "Republican" is tied to this street "Le Boulevard de la République".
"We are the party of white racial grievance. We believe those marching in Black Lives Matter protests are “thugs.” We see the term “systemic racism” as an unfair attack on white people. We support keeping Confederate monuments on their pedestals, and we have no idea why anyone would consider Confederate flags a problem. We are equal-opportunity racists. We see Latino immigrants as “bad hombres.” And we believe that using the racist term “kung flu” to describe covid-19 is hilarious, not least because we are convinced the covid-19 pandemic is basically over, anyway. Who cares what pointy-headed “experts” might say, we know in our hearts that patriotic Americans don’t wear masks." - Eugene Robinson, Columnist, The Washington Post

This is part of the Ebro battlefield (1938), in Southern Catalonia.
Among all the towns in the former battlefield, Corbera d'Ebre was the most destroyed of them all (although Vilalba, La Fatarella, Flix, Garcia and Benifallet were also quite damaged). All the upper, medieval, town was utterly bombed by the fascist artillery and even the nazi Legion Condor. It was after the war rebuilt only arround the lower road side. The top of the hill remains mostly empty now, because almost all the houses were destroyed and have even been razed afterwards to prevent dangers for the visitors. Only the mighty baroque church remains, although it lost it's roof.
Here are some aerial images:

This is the bombed and destroyed village of Corbera d'Ebre, in Republican hands from the 25th of July to the 3dr of September of 1938. Then it was utterly bombed alongside that sector of the front. Not only the fascist artillery was used, but also the German Legion Condor. Here it could be seen from the Coll del Moro viewpoint, the place from where Franco observed the battle several times. It had until several years ago a monument to the bloody dictator, but now it has been cleaned, moreover as it's an Iberian archaeological site.
The Battle of the Ebro (July 25 - November 16, 1938) was the most important and deadlier of the Spanish Civil War. There are those who also consider it the most decisive, but I think that unfortunately the war was already decided long before, at least since the breaking of the front of Aragon on March 9 of the same year.
The battle began with the greatest offensive made by the Republican forces, when they crossed the river Ebro between Mequinensa and Amposta (especially between Riba-roja and Miravet), and advanced to the line La Pobla de Massaluca -Vilalba dels Arcs -Gandesa - Serra de Pandols . But in just 48 hours, the dazzling advance was stopped short. Then Franco decided to crush the republican forces hill by hill (with massive artillery and bomber barrages), in a battle of attrition identical to the First World War for which the Republicans had no resources or alternative, especially with the river behind them. The main assaults, which lasted from August 10 to October 29, were concentrated in a very small and devastated area: the triangle Vertex Gaeta - Corbera - Camposines.
Finally, a final offensive on October 30 occupied the ridge of the Serra de Cavalls, making the entire Republican bridgehead unsustainable, which managed, however, to withdraw in an orderly manner until November 16. But the damage was already done, and there were no forces left for a proper defense of Catalonia, which fell three months later. Then, fascist darkness.

This beautiful industrial building is the Celler Cooperatiu de Gandesa, an art nouveau winery, built in 1920 by Cèsar Martinell. It's one of the so called "Wine Cathedrals" of southern Catalonia.
But it also was a combat scenery for the high watermark of the early Republican ofensive in the Ebro. This was the furthest the Republican soldiers reached, during the siege of Gandesa, specially on the 31th of July.

Another story for you!!! LOL!!
On May 20, I made it to Saulsalito!! Walking around the Marina, I saw this and wondered for a split second if I was in India. LOL!!
I saw a guy coming out of his houseboat and as inquiry mind wants to know asked about the Taj Mahal. He said: "You're right, it's is a miniature copy of the Taj Mahal, the owner, a rich lady, wanted a replica of the real, and they say the inside design and decor is very true to the real. She comes once a year, with her servants, in a limo, spends a day here mostly inside and away from Inquiry Miiiiiiinds and leaves by night"!!!
A daaaaaaaaaay, I said!! WOW!!! and continued "you have a beautiful boathouse!!! He said, mame, this is a houseboat, the kind you live in, not a boathouse, there is a difference, if you don't mind me correcting youd"!!!
Woah!!! I hate to be put in place like that!!! So I made a mistake, so I said with a big smile and dumb look: " Oh! i forgot to mention I am dyslexic with compound words and come to think of it with regular ones too, such as: aks, nukelar..." He interrupted me and said "Are you Republican??"
I said: " Don't know about that but I am Armeniiian??!!!" He looked up from his house-boat -house, stared surprised, and we both cracked up laughing to tears and bended in two!!! He said a great one there little lady, do you mind me telling this story to my friends?? I said go ahead coz I'll be telling it to mine!!!!"
P.S. Forgot to mention that I told him his boathouse was really pretty ( it really was!!!). He wasn't impressed but said thank you!!
Thanks for stopping by and commenting!!

It was a fine June 22, 2000 morning.
While Mitch McConnell and other Republicans have hinted that their opposition to investment in the Big Three is all about busting the unions, Jim DeMint refreshingly came out and admitted it yesterday on NPR.
Norris: Now, you know the unions are saying this is also a political ploy on the part of the Republicans to try get rid of unions and use the auto industry troubles to do just that.
Besides cutting union wages in half,,lets get rid of those other corporate headaches like health care, paid holidays, paid overtime, vacations, child labor laws, anti-discrimination, equal rights, mine safety, weekends, retirement benefits, any benefits,,,
and everything the unions have fought and died for for the last 100 years,,,

The large and beautiful cypresses of the cementery path must have been one of the main venues of attack for the Republican soldiers in front of Vilalba dels Arcs. They offer almost the only cover in a valley dominated by the medieval village and it's massive church.

Speaker Boner and your bonehead best friends, the tea bags...tried to drive through parks in Arizona and New Mexico but thanks to the boneheads it is not to be.
A NOTE ON THIS PICTURE: This picture appeared alongside an article in which the author made a case against people across the political spectrum incorrectly using the term Nazi to identify one's political ideology. The correct analogy would be to equate Obama's policies with those of the National Socialist Party.
Do I believe that Obama is a Nazi? No, that is ludicrous, but the article was a hard-hitting critique of the controversy surrounding people slinging the term Nazi around these days, hence the photo was appropriate. If it offends you, look away.
Thanks for reading.
this friendly, automatic-weapon-wielding gentleman was guarding the Post Office on Varick St during the Republican National Convention in 2004. Never have I seen so many cops in the city.
As long as I am into Halloween images, and referencing my freak show shot of the Fantasia Party, "Tiptoe through the Dimwits." This is a tribute to the last Republican president who: ended World War II, started no war (except for his Vice-President on the day he went to the hospital with a heart attack); restored the economy; paid the WWII debt; proclaimed himself the peace president, sent the returning GIs to college; rescued Europe with the Marshall Plan (officially the European Recovery Program, ERP); started the interstate highway infrastructure (sponsored and signed the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956; sponsored and signed the Civil Rights Bill of 1957; balanced the budget, three times; ended the Korean War; he kept the country at peace.
His top tax rate was 91% while Romney crowed about his 15%. Eisenhower loathed McCarthy. Spoke to the Congress of the United Sates: American working men and women needed the protection of law in order to guarantee them the free exercise of their fight to organize into unions and to bargain collectively through representatives of their own choosing. The US labor and industrial might was at its peak. What part of this Republican Party are the current slate of Koch shills? The date was the 1950s and the US was a creditor nation... unlike today. Thanks righties!
It's taken me years to understand why my parents were Republicans in the day. It's obvious now that being an engineer and a legal secretary that they would be smart enough to see through Republican disguises today.
