A veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus), at Stratford Butterfly Farm, Warwickshire.

Hailing from the Arabian peninsula, veiled chameleons are primarily insectivores, being well adapted for aboreal habitats. The veiled chameleon's colour-changing abilities make it a popular item in reptile houses and even as pets, however it it is highly succeptible to stress, which makes it challenging to keep healthy in captivity.

A Spider Tortoise in The Reptile House at The Welsh Mountain Zoo.

Tortoises are reptiles not mammals, because they lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young.

Dart frogs are brightly coloured to advertise that they are poisonous. Their skin contains high amounts of poison. They grow to about two to four centimetres.

California Kingsnake in the Reptile House at The Welsh Mountain Zoo, Colwyn Bay, North Wales.

This is one of the three lizards living in a large enclosure of the Reptile House, this male is by far the most friendly of the group, he comes to the window and waves his arms as he loves to interact, he also loves to gaze into your eyes for as long as you gaze at him back. During the moment captured in the image he'd been sitting by his pool contemplating having a swim, after a long while he still hadn't moved and it was time for me to leave, of course, as soon as I put my camera away he jumped in. Next time I am hoping to capture his great splash!

A royal python (also known as a ball python), Python regius, at Stratford Butterfly Farm, Warwickshire.

Royal pythons are a non-endangered species with a natural range stretching from Senegal to Uganda, typically around 110cm in length, with a natural diet of small mammals and birds. As a pet, they are the most popular snake, and second most common reptile. Their lifespan ranges from 15 to 60+ years.

Everyone loves a good directional sign post...this one is inside the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo and actually directs visitors to exhibits throughout the zoo. My favorite was Savannah Manor, where you'll find the large cats like the lion and tiger!

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D7200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

Philippine Sail-finned Lizard (Hydrosaurus pustulatus) in the Reptile House at the San Diego Zoo.

The Green Tree Pythons (Morelia viridis) are very comfortable on tree branches. They loop into a coil over a branch to form a saddle position. Then place their head in the middle for a bird's eye view of any rats passing below.

Apparently, due to this snake's popularity with herpetoculturist, their range has been extended from New Guinea, islands in Indonesia and Cape York Peninsula in Australia. Green Tree Pythons can now be found in the wild in Florida, U.S.A.

These small venomous arboreal pit vipers that are characterized by their wide array of color variations and scales that seem like eyelashes can be found in Central and South America.

When keepers discovered a clutch of mystery eggs in Reptile Mesa, they weren't sure which species they belonged to—until a tiny Oreo-cookie-sized Parker's snake-necked turtle emerged. Mystery solved!
