REPRODUCTION

Survival of a species depends on successful reproduction, and many aspects of the ecology of a species influence its reproductive processes. Differences within and between species reveal many ways in which the physiology and behavior of reproduction are adjusted to various ways of life in different habitats.

Courtship and mating usually are restricted to a definite breeding season. Most species in temperate zones mate in spring or autumn, but year-round breeding occurs in some tropical species. Activities such as feeding, growth, and development of fat deposits in the nonbreeding seasons also affect reproduction.

Most species of reptiles lay eggs, but many produce living young. Most live-bearing species occur in cooler regions--in the far north, far south, or at high elevations on mountains. Here, where cool temperatures would slow the development of eggs in a nest, pregnant females warm their embryos by basking in the sun.

Environmental factors, such as seasonal variation in day length and temperature, govern an animal's reproductive cycle through interaction with its physiology, such as production and release of neurosecretions and hormones. Which factors are most important in regulating reproduction of a particular species depends on its specific adaptations to its environment.

MATING

The climax of courtship is copulation. Among reptiles, fertilization is internal. In nearly all species, spermatozoa from the male are deposited in the female's cloaca or oviduct following insertion of his copulatory organ. The following species are exhibited here: Common Garter Snake, Thamnophis sirtalis; Box Turtle, Terrapene carolina; Green Anole, Anolis carolinensis.

In the vast majority of reptiles, as among vertebrates in general, fertilization is necessary for an egg to develop. However, a few species of reptiles consist of female individuals only; no males exist. These females produce eggs that develop without any involvement of spermatozoa, and all offspring are females.

DELAYED FERTILIZATION

Fertilization, union of egg and sperm, occurs soon after mating in many animals, but not necessarily in reptiles. In many species, mostly lizards and snakes, part of the female reproductive tract, usually the oviduct, has specialized cells, folds and ciliated tubules that can store, protect, and perhaps even nourish sperm long after mating. Females of some species have distinctive structures, seminal receptacles, shown here in a Common Garter Snake, Thamnophis sirtalis.

In some females, functional sperm can be stored for several years. Delayed fertilization is advantageous in species with low population densities and those that den in large numbers. Mating may occur when individuals meet, even if eggs are not ripe. A female need not mate each year in order to reproduce.

Reproductive Health Center is very transparent about the cost of fertility treatments offered at the clinic and patients who opt for it will even get a detailed breakup of costs of each procedure. This is against other clinics that either do not give the details or mention a lump sum amount without informing what is included and what is left out from it.

Joan Dahnke Billing Assistant discusses the various financing options for treatment. Patients can apply for loans through ARC and to make their task easy, all such links are given on the site. Clients can click on the links and quickly know their eligibility or ring the clinic directly and seek assistance for funding of treatment.

Carol Peterson, Front Office Manager also shares information about insurance alternatives. In case patients find that their insurance policy covers fertility, Carol advises them to get in touch with the clinic to seek prior authorization. This process she says can take up to 30 days.

Usually considered as an invasive species because of their speedy reproductive methods, mint belongs to a group of plants that reproduces vegetatively or asexually. They do not require any cross pollination or genetic mixing because each mint is an exact clone of the parent. In a forest of mint, one might find only a few genetic differences between the plants.

For the most part, mint relies on a complex system of underground roots, also known as rhizomes, to branch out and populate its environment. As the thick and fibrous roots spread, they eventually push out the other species in the area by taking all of the nutrients and water from the soil for themselves.

Even though this might seem like a hostile takeover, it is really just the plants’ defense mechanism. The mint is protecting is territory, and ensuring that there is space and nutrients for its clones.
