The Cistercian Abbey was founded June 23, 1184 by Viscount "Alain III de Rohan."
Prosperous until the sixteenth century, the Abbey becomes Royale. For it begins a period of decline with a short period of renewal at the end of the 17th century.
During the French Revolution of 1789, the last 4 monks of the Abbey of Bon Repos flee to the Kingdom of Great Britain and leave the abbey abandoned.
This date marks the end of the monastic life. In 1791, it will be sold as national property, and bought by a revolutionary Weaver, Mayor of Rostrenen, Julien Le Bris, which installs a textile factory.
In 1796 it will be looted - not burned - by the Chouans that will occupy several times as barracks or at least exceptional refuge.
She then served as shelter for manufacturers of Nantes-Brest canal, then fell for years to retire.
The abbey was just in ruins when in 1986, the association of "Companions of the Bon-Repos Abbey" has undertaken extensive work that has paid off with the total renovation of the angle southeast of the abbey, which is now open to the public

A la Révolution française de 1789, les 4 derniers moines de l'abbaye de Bon Repos fuient vers le Royaume de Grande-Bretagne et laissent cette abbaye à l’abandon.
Cette date marque la fin de la vie monastique. En 1791, elle sera vendue comme bien national, et achetée par un tisserand révolutionnaire, maire de Rostrenen, Julien Le Bris, qui y installera une manufacture de textile.
En 1796 elle sera pillée - et non brûlée - par les chouans qui l'occuperont à plusieurs reprises comme caserne ou du moins comme refuge exceptionnel.
Elle servit ensuite d'abris aux constructeurs du canal de Nantes à Brest, puis tomba pour de longues années à l'abandon.
L'abbaye n'était plus qu'à l'état de ruines quand en 1986, l'association des « Compagnons de l'abbaye de Bon-Repos » a entrepris un long travail qui a porté ses fruits avec la rénovation totale de l'angle sud-est de l'abbaye qui est désormais ouverte au public.
J'ai traité cette photo après avoir appris le décès d'un confrère grimpeur dans le domaine de l'escalade suite à un accident lors d'une grimpe. Certains le savent que Paule et moi pratiquons cette activité. Le milieu de l'escalade au Québec n'étant pas très grand, autant du côté de la roche que de la glace, on se connaît ou se côtoie de façon plus ou moins rapprochée. Jean-Claude était un pionnier dans le domaine et il a marqué cette pratique au cours des trente dernières années. Il était également le conjoint d'une collègue de travail. Il me semble que la photo m'apparaît être la bonne pour le saluer.
