This whole nose cone is going away. It split right across, the section under the front window was dry-rotted anyway, and propane really does not belong in an enclosure right next to my bed. The batteries are going to move back and the propane will come out onto the nose.
The owner was sitting nearby and had no idea why I was taking a photo of his old bicycle. I just liked his use of a zip-tie to secure his shifter lever's position.

My EOS-300D purchased in April 2004 is about to be returned to Canon for repair. The auto-focus stopped working.
This is the second repair the camera has needed and this time it is out of warranty. I'm not impressed by Canon's quality. I think they skimped a lot to get the price below US$1,000.
It's not financially feasible for me to change to another brand because of my investment in lenses. So I will probably go ahead with my plan to buy a EOS-30D. Its a "semi-pro" camera and should be tougher.
Depending on the cost of repairing this one I may have to delay the purchase of its replacement.
The first time it failed was a few months after purchase when the pop-up flash wouldn't. Canon repaired it under warranty. It still cost a non-trivial sum to pack it and ship it to them, insured.
I added this picture to a number of Canon related groups on Flickr to see if people find them to be generally unreliable and if auto-focus failues are common. If so we may be able to lobby for a reduced cost or free repair.

Things didn't get better. Luggie owner Tom Dickson got on the mike, apologized, and sent us home. Supposedly the makeup game will be this evening at 5:05 pm, but I've doubts....

ten foot table that was extremely bowed in the center. I was asked to repair the table. I disassembled it, planed the boards, drilled holes in the sides, made dowels out of pencils and glued it back together with the help of the dowels, some rope, five new boards across the bottom, and two bottles of glue! it was a lot of work but wood is very expensive in Uganda due to deforestation, and they said the repair of this table would save the ministry a lot of money. I also really enjoy woodworking, so i had fun too.
