Air conditioning, also called aircon, AC or A/C system, can be defined as a technique or system with the main objective to modify the properties of the air we breathe, such as climate and humidity, to more comfortable conditions for the occupants of the home or office. However, from a general perspective, this term may talk about any kind of system that transforms the conditions of the air, including venting systems, heating or disinfection.
An AC unit can be defined either as a system, mechanism or appliance. Air conditioners have the ability to change the heat level of the air, being used for cooling and sometime heating. The system employed by air conditioners is called a refrigeration system, although sometimes they may use an evaporation system.
Installing a complete cooling system, often reffered to as an hvac system, is a pretty hard job, which involves knowledge of plumbing and electrical work. Many people leave the job to specialized service providers, which is encouraged most of the times.
As all home appliances, cooling systems can break down every now and then, especially if they are not properly maintained. When the a/c unit works, but the air isn't properly cooled down, the problem probably is in the distribution system. Other problems in air conditioning systems may be caused by dirty, cloged or leaky ducts or minor malfunctions in the evaporator or condenser unit.
Since these units are sealed, it's better to call a specialized technician to deal with those problems, as well as with maintenance and cleaning jobs. Also, AC systems should be examined and adjusted before any cooling season, in order to prevent malfunctions and breakdowns and keep your cooling system working successfully. Construction on the shed commenced shorty after the establshment of HMC in 1929. This was the main workshop for the repair and overhaul of the companys large and diverse fleet of locomotives. The floor in this building was made up of wooden blocks.
When the workshops closed in 1964 the inspection pits shown in the photographs were filled in with locomotive spares and then concreted over. They are still there to this day.
Pictured undergoing a refit is HMC number 3. A much loved and photographed locomotive that was built by Robert Stephenson and Co at Forth Street Newcastle on Tyne in 1867 for the North Eastern Railway.
Amazingly this engine was working at Seaton Delaval and New Hartley until the 1950's and was scrapped in 1959 despite attempts to have it preserved.
yala got this for christmas this year and it was a big hit, great for annoying little brothers and a doll, to boot. of course, plastic talking dolls are gonna break and it didn't take this one long to lose its talking. we took a look at opening it up at the time but the head was on there really well, and no pioneering parent had popped up in a blog to relay any experience (hopefully, someone looking for this info in the future will find these pics). it was only when the neck finally snapped that we decided to take a real look at it.
the neck is obviously the weak point, thin plastic with just about the cheapest wire possible connecting the speaker in the head with the electronics in the body. the head has ridges facing against the neck opening in the body to prevent the two from pulling apart - think drywall screws. before i knew about the ridges, i tried to force against the broken pieces with a screwdriver (really took a push at it, too) and couldn't get them to push out. snapping the neck is basically the only way to get the body and the head apart once they're together.
the real electronics problem, however, was the incredibly cheap neck wiring; it just pulled off the mating connector when i moved it for the first time. in this picture you can see the two red wires leading off the CB that are their replacement.
