This is part of the penultimate urban reorganization of Matera: The creation of the new district of the Piano which at certain points overlaps the Civita and includes the Corso, Piazza Vittorio and via XX Settembre. This can be seen very well in the shot of the Cathedral taken from Piazza Vittorio : the Civita appears lower than in the district of the Piano.

Illinois Central’s southbound Markham local passes under a signal bridge at mile 37.8 south of Monee, Illinois, on January 21, 1989. The train is powered by a pair of Illinois Central Gulf GP10s—Nos. 8186 and 8343—rebuilt by the railroad in its Paducah, Kentucky, shops from EMD GP9 locomotives. IC merged with Gulf, Mobile & Ohio in 1972, forming ICG, but after a later reorganization, ICG dropped the “Gulf” from its name and became Illinois Central Railroad on February 29, 1988.
Bastion Hill Park
In 1856, the ramparts of the Riga Fortress were demolished, replacing the 'Sand Bastion' with the name of Basteiberg (German: Basteiberg) (originally known as Bastion Hill).
In 1879, the Riga Gardens Directorate was established and the 27-year-old Georg Kuphaldt was officially appointed Director of the Riga Gardens. His first project was the reconstruction of the greenery of Bastejkalns. The creation of the German: Basteiberganlagen plantation of the Bastion Hill lasted from 1859 to 1887. In 1860, a wooden pavilion was erected and replaced in 1887 with the first Bastion Hill café. The waterfall cascade built from Saulkalne's dolomite into the mountain was built in 1898. It has survived to the present day, but no longer with the less sophisticated underwater lighting that was still operational at the beginning of the last century. Around 1893, a pseudo-swan-style swan cottage, work of Riga's architect Heinrich Scheel, was placed on pontoons along the Bastejkalns Canal - usually pulled ashore in the winter months, where it is still today. Swans donated by "Riga Bird Breeding Society". In 1883, at the foot of the Bastion Hill, a 23-meter-long wooden bridge was erected over the canal (its curvature was so steep that people slipped out of it in winter and the bridge was ironically called by the Riga inhabitants), which was replaced in 1893 by masonry. Then a bridge was built to connect the Old Town with what is now Rainis Boulevard (designed in 1898, rebuilt a little later and still in operation).
In 1951, according to the architect Jānis Ginters project, Bastejkalns built support walls, which used parts of the buildings of Riga destroyed by World War II. The Bastion Hill greenery was restored with various sculptures in 1968.
The square of this public park was used until 1856 as part of the eastern fortifications and consisted in this area of earthen ramparts, covered trenches, bastions and moats. This fortress section was assigned to the commander of the 'Powder Tower'.
In the following years, the open ground was reshaped by considerable landfills and the city canal and connected to the eastern suburb by new bridges. At the suggestion of the architects Johann Felsko and Otto Dietze, a green area of parks and gardens as well as a broad boulevard were created here. For a large part of the facilities, the landscape architect Georg Kuphaldt was acquired as a planner. A landmark and enrichment of the plant are the 1898 designed as Wasserkunst waterfall. To those the city canal in the area of the park spanning bridges belongs the 1900 built Timmbrücke.
The park has been expanded to include more monuments and facilities, including the Freedom Monument and the two memorial stones for the victims of Riga citizens and security forces who died in January 1991 in an OMON deployment. As early as 1929, the construction of the Blaumanis Monument was completed. As part of a reorganization from 1968, the sculpture Peace Dance was erected in 1970. In 2006, Elizabeth II and Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga unveiled monument to Riga Mayor George Armitstead. In 2007, the unveiling of the Vīgners Monument took place.
“Water is always working, reorganizing the land.” - Tim Palmer
Another scene from the same afternoon on the beach.
From it's most earliest days in the early 1900's to it's sad end in the mid 1950's Packard maintained a signature design element on their grill surrounds. Starting lower on the sides the grill surrounds would bump up and raise in the center, and you will find versions of this on every model of every Packard for every year of Packard's existence. When I first came upon the Reo in the photo the first thing I noticed was the Packard like grill surround, and thinking, in fact, that it was indeed a Packard. Well, that was only true until I noticed the emblem in the center with the letters R E O emblazoned on it. Like Packard in their day, Reo was considered somewhat of a luxury automobile, and as such, they were priced accordingly. I suspect, however, that they didn't have the same panache that Packard enjoyed. So, was the Packard like grill surround on this 1930 Reo a design coincidence, or could you say that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?" REO, the company, was founded by the former founder and owner of the Oldsmobile company, Ransom E. Olds (Notice the first letters in his name REO.) The company started in Lansing, Michigan, and had a long and somewhat successful history producing cars and trucks from 1905 to 1975. In 1936, Reo stopped producing cars in favor of devoting it's time to the end in 1975 to producing trucks.
Vince M
Although truck orders during World War II enabled it to revive somewhat, the company remained unstable in the postwar era, resulting in a bankruptcy reorganization. In 1954, the company was still underperforming, and sold its vehicle manufacturing operations (the primary asset of the company) to the Bohn Aluminum and Brass Corporation of Detroit. Three years later, in 1957, Reo's vehicle manufacturing operation became a subsidiary of the White Motor Company. White then merged REO with Diamond T Trucks in 1967 to form Diamond Reo Trucks. In 1975, this company filed for bankruptcy and most of its assets were liquidated. Volvo later took over White and thus currently owns the rights to the REO brand name.

The fascinating C42 Citroen building is basically a giant atrium with a central articulated display column embraced by U shaped floors. It was inaugurated in September 2007 and designed by Manuelle Gautrand. The building was alas closed end 2017 due to a reorganization of the Citroen dealer network (thanx Evelien Noens for mentioning this closure).

Piombino Castle is the city's main surviving military defensive structure.
The castle marked the city's boundary on that side and housed a city gate.
The castle was originally built by the Pisans in the 13th century and was
remodeled by Leonardo da Vinci when he oversaw the reorganization of the
city's defenses. With the advent of firearms, it was equipped with star-shaped bastions between 1552 and 1557, under Cosimo I de' Medici. It was restored
between 1999 and 2001.

Bastion Hill
Bastion Hill is one of the most romantic places in central Riga, as it features narrow paths, alleys of trees, stone garden, water cascade.
In 1856, the ramparts of the Riga Fortress were demolished, replacing the 'Sand Bastion' with the name of Basteiberg (German: Basteiberg) (originally known as Bastion Hill).

The large white Beverweerd Castle (also simply Beverweert) stands out starkly against its green, wooded backdrop. With its battlements and massive towers, Beverweerd is an impressive sight. The island on which the castle stands lies directly on the winding Kromme Rijn river and is accessible from two sides via an elegant wrought-iron bridge spanning the moat. The main entrance to the grounds is recognizable by a monumental gate, also of wrought iron, which encloses the grounds. Near the main entrance stands the former coach house. The neo-Gothic castle, with its two towers, is situated in a parkland of approximately 7 hectares. The entire grounds encompass no less than 417 hectares, consisting primarily of agricultural land. Beverweerd also includes eleven farms, recognizable by their ochre, green, and red shutters. Beverweerd Castle dates back to a medieval residential tower that over the centuries developed into a more or less square residential castle. At the request of H.J.C.E. Baron Van Heeckeren, the castle was transformed between 1835 and 1862 into a regular neo-Gothic building. The park was reorganized in a landscaped style, probably by Leonard Antonij Springer. The coach house was built in 1867. This was later converted into a girls' pavilion when an educational institution was established in Beverweerd. Around 1960, a number of new buildings were also erected in the park for this purpose.
As Tofu is often bored these days he has adopted the annoying habit of opening all drawers he can reach in the house. Sometimes he just 'reorganizes' the content, sometimes he chooses one item and entertains himself with it. Today he found an old but colourful autumn garland which he used to decorate one of his cat beds.

I am using a very old, rickety tripod that every time you think you have it locked into place it readjusts itself as if little gremlins are controlling it. I really spent more time than I want to admit trying to put this shot together, time has escaped me and I'm finally moving forward with the day. The peach really was delicious, the kind where juice drips down your hand and runs to your elbow. It was the highlight of my morning thus far.
I need to sort through my 100x images and renumber/reorganize them. No idea where I am with the project right now.

This is the first photo I have posted since someone broke out a window on my rental car and stole my computer bag which was hidden under a seat. I had a drive with most of my recently processed photos on it. I have backups but it will take me a while to get everything reorganized. The breakin ocured while I was eating at a restaurant in an upscale busy area in Houston, Texas. Fortunately my cameras and lenses were not in the car. Good to be back home in Wyoming.

So many times I see these small woodpeckers and I try to remember which is the Downy Woodpecker and which is the Hairy Woodpecker. They are so similar at first glance. So I bought a really good bird book to help me identify the birds that will be returning to our area soon. The book is beautiful to browse through and it has me excited for the new birding season. I found out that this guy is the Downy Woodpecker. I will concentrate on trying to spot the two main differences to tell them apart. This guy has a shorter beak than the Hairy. Plus, the Downy has these black spots on the white tail feathers which you can just tell on the one image.
This brings me to my next goal in photography. I just deleted about 500 images from my photo stream this week. I will get rid of more. My work has changed and it has even improved over the years I have been on Flickr so there are images I do not need to keep online anymore. There are many I can even improve with better editing techniques I have learned and then I can replace those old images with newly edited images. My bird album is one of the first albums I will reorganize, I do not want to just collect bird images. I want to try for better bird images. I admire all the wildlife photographers on Flickr. I am not as dedicated to capturing all the amazing images they take. This is a simple practice for me to get to know my camera better and to try to keep improving while learning more about the world around me. Happy Wing Wednesday!
ps. There was a branch right in front of the bird which gave it a faded patch on his body. My editing skills are not yet good enough to "fix that". lol
The Millennium Biltmore Hotel, originally named the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel of the Biltmore Hotels group, is a luxury hotel located across the street from Pershing Square in Downtown Los Angeles, California, US. Upon its grand opening in 1923, the Los Angeles Biltmore was the largest hotel west of Chicago, Illinois in the United States.[1] In 1969 the Biltmore Hotel was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument by the City of Los Angeles. Regal Hotels purchased the Biltmore in 1996, and then sold it in 1999 to Millennium & Copthorne Hotels.[2] As of 2009, the Los Angeles Biltmore is operated as part of the Millennium & Copthorne Hotels chain as the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. The hotel has 70,000 square feet (6,500 m2) of meeting and banquet space. From its original 1500 guestrooms it now has 683, due to room reorganization

While reorganizing/deleting photos as we are getting a new PC, I'm thrilled all over again with New England in the fall. We purchased a map of all the covered bridges and drove through many of them. This one was in New Hampshire. #TMT
Interior of the church Saint-Taurin in Évreux. I think the sculpture of Mary and her child (to the left) was made in the 16th century and is classified as historical monument (Base Palissy).
The sculpture on the column to the right depicts the crucifixion and was also made in the 16th century. It's also classified as historical monument.
The choir of Saint-Taurin is built in the 15th century Gothic style, while the nave is a mixture of 12th century Romanesque, by the pillars and arcades of the north aisle, and by the south-west pillar of the crossing of the transept, and Gothic of the 15th century, with its vaults, windows and north triforium.
A first church on this place was built in the 10th century. But there is nothing left of that building. The church was part of a former Benedictine monastery located near the town centre of Évreux.
The tomb of Saint Taurin (died ca. 410) was discovered by the saint Laudulphe in the 6th century, who built a modest wooden oratory on this site, destroyed during the Norman invasions at the end of the 9th century. After the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911 and following the reorganization of the new province of Normandy, a Benedictine abbey was founded around the year 950 on this place by Richard I of Normandy (932-996).
Robert I of Normandy (1000-1035), father of William the Conqueror, placed the abbey under the dependence of the monks of Fécamp. The monastery was the object of many destructions during the conflict between the Dukes of Normandy (who were also kings of England) and the kings of France. In 1195, when the town was taken by Philip II of France (1165-1223), the abbey and the town of Évreux were burned down, and had to be almost completely rebuilt.
After 1516 the abbey fell into decline due to the system of In Commendam. The king Francis I of France (1494-1547) has deployed abbots for all French monasteries. In some cases that was good, but in most cases the abbots, who had nothing to do with the abbey, took the money and did nothing. This was the case in Évreux.
The Benedictine reform led the congregation of Saint-Maur to take over the abbey in 1642. The church was in ruins; the last three bays of the nave had to be demolished. It was the Maurists who built the current portal, in the classical style.
In The French Revolution (1789-1799) the monks were killed or chased away. The church was sold in 1793 and afterwards used to store saltpetre, which was used to make gunpowder.
Since 1801 the church Saint-Taurin serves as parish church and replaces the former parish church Saint-Gilles. I don't know what happened to that church, but I bet they tore it down. The place Saint-Taurin, where the church Saint-Taurin stands, used to be the place where Saint-Gilles and its graveyard were located.
A street view of University Ave. as seen looking west from Market St. This view captures both the previously featured Illinois Traction building on the left, and the City Building straight ahead at University Ave. and Neil St.
Built in 1913, the Illinois Traction Building was designed by architect Joseph Royer in the Early 20th Century Commercial style. It served as the headquarters and Champaign Station of the Illinois Traction System (ITS), a heavy duty interurban electric railroad with extensive passenger and freight business in central and southern Illinois that operated from 1896 to 1956.
When Depression era Illinois Traction was in financial distress and had to reorganize, the Illinois Terminal name was adopted in 1937 to reflect the line's primary money making role as a freight interchange link to major steam railroads at its terminal ends in Peoria, Danville and St. Louis. Interurban passenger service slowly was reduced, ending in 1956. Freight operation continued but was hobbled by tight street running in some towns requiring very sharp radius turns. In 1956, ITC was absorbed by a consortium of connecting railroads.
The Illinois Traction Building later became the headquarters of Illinois Power and Light. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, the building has been repurposed as commercial and office space.
Seen in the distance is the distinctive green copper roof of the 5-story City Building. Completed in 1937, this Art Deco style municipal building was designed by architect George Ramey, who attended the University of Illinois and graduated with a B.S. in architecture in 1912. My previous view two posts back showed the front facade. This view shows the building from its back side. Today the building continues to be the center of Champaign government with eight of the twelve City Departments calling it home. The City Building is a contributing property within the Champaign Downtown Commercial District listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2020.
Located in Champaign County in east central Illinois, the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana are the home of the University of Illinois. The population of the City of Champaign at the 2020 census was 88,302, while Champaign County had a population of 205,865.
The monastery was founded in the village Skanovo, near Narovchat (Penza region, Russia), in the 17th century. Later on it was reorganized into the Trinity-Skanov nunnery. Its current architectural ensemble was formed in the years 1790-1810.
A corner view of the National Bank of Decatur taken from the intersection of S. Park and N. Water St. in downtown Decatur. The east (right) side of the 100 block on N. Water St. is occupied by the bank and a parking lot. The two larger buildings in this view, both in the 100 block of S. Water St., are the Standard Life Building and the former Hotel Orlando. Both will be shown in more detail later in this series.
National Bank Of Decatur Building
The bank was started in 1873 as the Decatur National Bank with a capital stock of $100,000. In 1893 it was reorganized as the National Bank of Decatur. For years this bank was located at the northwest corner of Prairie and Water streets, but in 1914 the bank moved into its beautiful new building shown here at the corner of N. Water and S. Park streets. This Neo-Classical style structure was designed by the architectural firm of Brooks & Bramhall. Today it is a fine example of an early 20th century banking institution.
After a 2004 merger the bank became known briefly as Main Street Bank & Trust. A second merger in 2007 saw the bank acquired by Busey Bank in Champaign, Illinois.

The exact date when the first Gothic style church dedicated to apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul, was built is unknown, but it was first mentioned in written sources in 1413. The first parochial school in Kaunas at the St. Peter and St. Paul church was mentioned in 1473.[1] The construction works were concluded only in 1624. The church greatly suffered from wars in 1655 and was rebuilt in 1671, gaining some Renaissance features. Only one of the towers was rebuilt after the fire of the roof in 1732. As a part of renovation, the internal decorations were funded by the King Stanisław August Poniatowski in 1771. The main altar, a lectern and a choir were installed by Tomasz Podhajski in 1775. The present day shape of the building is from a further renovation in 1800. Motiejus Valančius, thе bishop of Samogitia, who was also an historian and one of the best known Lithuanian writers of the 19th century, was interred in a crypt of the church in 1875.
The church was promoted to cathedral status by Pope Leo XIII in 1895. It received the Basilica title in 1926, when the Diocese of Samogitia was reorganized into the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kaunas by Pope Pius XI. The cathedral, being 84 m long, 28 m height and 34 m wide, is the largest Gothic church in Lithuania. The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, built in 1895, is an independent extension of the southern nave with carved wood furnishings in the neo-gothic style.
The monastery was founded in the village Skanovo, near Narovchat, in the 17th century. Later on it was reorganized into the Trinity-Skanov nunnery. Its current architectural ensemble was formed in the years 1790-1810.
The Kingdom of Georgia had been a tributary to the Great Seljuq Empire since the 1080s. However, in the 1090s, the energetic Georgian king David IV was able to exploit internal unrest in the Seljuq state and the success of the Western European First Crusade against Muslim control of the Holy Land, and established a relatively strong monarchy, reorganizing his army and recruiting Kipchak, Alan, and even Frankish mercenaries to lead them to the reconquest of lost lands and the expulsion of Turkish raiders. David's battles were not, like those of the Crusaders, part of a religious war against Islam, but rather were a political-military effort to liberate Caucasus from the nomadic Seljuks.
David renounced the tribute to the Seljuqs in 1096/7, and put an end to the seasonal migrations of the Turks into Georgia. Following the annexation of Kingdom of Kakheti, in 1105, David routed a Seljuk punitive force at the Battle of Ertsukhi, leading to momentum that helped him to secure several key fortresses in a series of campaigns from 1103 to 1118.
Georgia having been at war for the better part of twenty years, needed to be allowed to become productive again. To strengthen his army, King David launched a major military reform in 1118–1120 and resettled several thousand Kipchaks from the northern steppes to frontier districts of Georgia. In return, the Kipchaks provided one soldier per family, allowing King David to establish a standing army in addition to his royal troops (known as Monaspa). The new army provided the king with a much-needed force to fight both external threats and internal discontent of powerful lords.
Starting in 1120, King David began a more aggressive policy of expansion, penetrating as far as the Araxes river basin and the Caspian littoral, and terrorizing Muslim traders throughout the South Caucasus. By June 1121, Tbilisi had actually been under a Georgian siege, with its Muslim élite being forced into paying a heavy tribute to David IV. The resurgence of Georgians’ military energies, as well as his demands for tribute from the independent city of Tbilisi brought about a coordinated Muslim response. In 1121, Sultan Mahmud b. Muhammad (c.1118–1131) declared a holy war on Georgia.
