Despite the bulk of comments on Tripadvisor suggesting it was a terrible idea to drive ourselves along the Amalfi coast, I decided to pre-book a little Fiat 5oo with Hertz Rentacar in Sorrento. After handing over my driving licence, passport and credit card they asked me the name of the hotel I was staying at. Only then did they very deliberately say, "OK now we will tell you how much you have to pay if the car is stolen". Having just given them the name of the hotel, and aware it was their car and they had the spare keys and we are in Mafia country, this really put the willies up me. Especially when they said I would have to pay 2000- euros. One doesn't have to be too clever to realise that if someone wanted to they could just pop over to the Hotel Jaccarino (an excellent hotel) at night, pick up the car, and make it disappear for a bit and bill my credit card for 2000- euros. I'm not of a nervous disposition but all the same it didn't take much to persuade me that I should pay for the Super Cover which tripled my anticipated cost of car hire. Now I don't wish to slander Hertz but I can't help but wonder if this is a 'designed' sales technique. But on hearing that we had hired a car and intended to cruise the Amalfi coast the Thomson rep suggested we were very, very careful.

As it turned out someone must have reversed a bigger vehicle into the car on the first night leaving a small dent in the boot (which could have cost 2000-euros) but I found I quite liked the 'horrendous' driving of the Italians in this area. It seems they do not obey any sort of traffic rules which was an extremely close match for my own style of driving. My three passengers might well have been terrified but I loved it, trying to put the fear of God into the Italians, especially those on scooters, who came two abreast towards me on my side of the road. We got on fine (although I had to shut my eyes a few times) so much so that I drove to Amalfi and beyond and back to Sorrento twice in one day. We came back with cramping thigh and butt muscles, needing decompression............we had the bends! Take the road from Sorrento via Sant Agata to Amalfi and up to Ravello (twice) and you will know what I mean.

The nightmare part was trying to park.

A pleasant car with which we explored the surroundings of Lviv, including the drive to the Tarakaniv Fort.

Hranivka / Гранівка, Ukraine

The first car I ever rented in Europe was an Alpha Romeo. I drove it from Frankfurt to Cologne for the weekend. It was equipped with an early GPS (ca 1998) which was programmed to return to the rentacar shop. So for three days, I had to put up with a German lady telling me to do a u-turn in German at every possible opportunity.

My late friend John Cooke took a few slides on his travels with the Air Training Corps, albeit with a snapshot camera which didn't provide the sharpest of images. This rather pleasant example of a Western Alexander 'Y Type' bodied Leyland Leopard was taken at Inveraray as the dual purpose machine was on the long trek down the Kintyre Peninsular to Cambletown.

1968 built KCS 154F wasn't new at the time this photo was taken, but looked to be very smartly turned out.

The Godfrey Davis rentacar Ford Transit on the right was of its time, I remember their being a telephone kiosk on Stoke railway station Platform 1 where you could summon up a hire vehicle back in the '70s.

The picturesque village Nieuwendam is especially this century significantly expanded. The Nieuwendammerdijk in Amsterdam-Noord. is nowadays part of the neighborhood Nieuwendammerdijk in Amsterdam North. The dike village , however, know maintain his own identity over the years. Nieuwendam has a beautiful old town centre and is situated in an oasis of tranquility, in the vicinity of the busy city life. The Vliegenbos, a forest is located between Meeuwenlaan and Nieuwendammerdijk. The Vliegenbos a real forest, with large elms, a wild undergrowth and beautiful open spaces. There is also a camping site that is visited annually by 150,000 people. Before the IJ tunnel was built in 1968, a ferry kept for 30 years the connection between Nieuwendam and central city. In recent years, this ferry is restored during summertime. Café 't Sluisje with waterfront terrace at the Nieuwendammerdijk is a perfect place to have a drink. in the old days farmers arrived here from the surrounding villages through this lock to bring their milk to the city center. Even now one can sail through the sluice by boat. However, you must operate the lock by yourself . Many sailors moored here earlier on. With the presence of several old dike houses you will find yourself in a historical part of Amsterdam. Nieuwendam also got the smallest church in Amsterdam. Located on the Meerpad and built around 1840. It is ideal to explore this route by bike, on foot or by car2go.

Nowadays you can see them everywhere car2go is waiting for you: along the canals of the Jordaan, along the Zuidas and now also in Amsterdam North. Car2go is a city car: small, nimble and easy to park. Moreover car2go is environmentally friendly, thanks to the electric drive, there is no emission of harmful gases . Hire them as long as you want and as far as you want, but keep in mind the battery capacity. car2go has no fixed rental locations. With an app, you can see where the cars are located and available. Like these two car2gos above available at the Nieuwendammerdijk in Amsterdam North.
