Hot; very hot, too hot for me. In the East Midlands it's now officially a drought. This is certainly due to climate change; politicians need to stop talking and do something quickly! Don't open any new coal mines or issue new permits for oil or gas exploration; look to renewables.

Windy days are perfect to create power with windmills. In my homeland, located in the north of Bavaria in Germany, there are a lot of windpower plants. I like them as they are good photographic sujets.

This is where the limits of super telephoto photography become apparent (here 800mm). With a straight line of almost 100km between the Olympic Park and the Zugspitze, the "heat shimmer" and dirt in the atmosphere limit the image quality. Even though it was only just over 0 degrees Celsius in the morning, "vibrated" the air. The focal point were the wind turbines. Still a picture that I wanted to show.

Well, it's red at least and quite warm. Hope you're all warm where you are. I have to say, it's a challenge keeping warm here with the heating off. It's ridiculous how expensive EVERYTHING is now, and I live in a country producing ALL and more of it's energy in renewables (Scotland). It's at times like this, sitting here without heating, wrapped in many layers that my desire for an independent Scotland grows. Everything done by the UK in the last 12 years has been an unmitigated disaster. Anyway, enjoy the legs, you'll probably not see them until the spring!

Windy Hill Wind Farm is a wind power station near Ravenshoe on the Atherton Tableland, Queensland, Australia. It has 20 wind turbines with a generating capacity of 12 MW of electricity, providing enough power for about 3,500 homes, those in Atherton and Mareeba. The cost of the project was A$20 million. It was the second wind farm to be constructed in Queensland after the 0.45Mw station on Thursday Island.,It was built in 1999 and commissioned in 2000.

It reduces emissions of CO2 by 25000 tonnes per year and an estimated 0.625 million tonnes over its design life of 25 years.

The tubular towers are 44 metres high, the turbines at 46 metres and the blades, pitch perfect are also 46 metres in diameter.

The wind turbines are located on private land which continues to be used as a dairy farm. They can rotate at speeds between 14 rpm to 38 rpm. Power from the turbines is carried by underground cable to the electricity grid.

The Canadian province of Alberta is well known for its petroleum energy. What it's not as well known for is its wind energy located in the south western region of the province. Here, in the windiest part of Canada, is a rich resource of renewable wind energy.

So you may have noticed I have posted a few windmill pics. I have choose windmills and their effect on our visual environment my personal project this year. Some enjoy and believe they add to our landscape while others believe they truly destroy our landscapes. What do you belive?

I love wind turbines. I know they can be a contentious subject but apart from their energy creating qualities; they add a certain something to a hilltop.
